possibly controversial disability community opinion: long-term caregivers should be considered somewhat part of the disability community and i'm kind of tired of excluding caregivers from discussions about ableism and systemic issues when caregivers also get the short end of the stick right alongside us every. single. time.

"some caregivers are ableist and caregiving doesn't inherently make you a good person" and "caregivers are regularly affected by ableism and systemic issues" are two things that are both true.

Also, I beg of you all, please please PLEASE include more heavily disabled people in your activities and groups.

A lot of us do not have many friends (if at all) or are just generally very socially isolated. It means so much more than you think when you include us in things.

Disabled people do not get the same right to be impolite as abled people have.

we should always aim to be respectful towards each other + be polite when appropriate, with some exceptions of course. you do not have to be polite or respectful towards bigots, to hateful people, to people who have harmed you or others etc.

but not everyone can afford to be impolite towards a hateful person or a bigot or a person who’s harmed others in some way.

disabled people, and especially moderately-severely disabled people cannot afford to be impolite towards people who are harming us, simply because we rely so much on other people to be able to survive.

if i am impolite in some way to my mom who controls my finances, that could really fuck me over.

if i am impolite in some way to a healthcare worker who is in charge of my care, that could really fuck me over.

if i am impolite in some way to anyone responsible for my care, for maintaining my home, for controlling my finances, literally anything: that could REALLY fuck me over.

and i don’t mean being rude or impolite for no reason, i still would not be able to be impolite or rude towards a healthcare worker who is treating me like garbage, because that could make it worse and as a very disabled person who can’t survive without others support that is genuinely life or death.

people NEED to take this into account, everyone can’t just be an asshole back to the person treating them like shit, it could be so dangerous. and this again, is twice as dangerous for more severely disabled people who are more vulnerable and depend on others to stay alive.
