We have been watching videos in anticipation for chapter 5. I have been thinking about the page on Deltarune.com called /chapter_5/. I have always wondered why chapter 6 and chapter 7 were not listed.
One of the videos we watched was all of the weird route options and cutscenes. The friend I was watching with pointed out the extended version of the weird route jingle that plays when you give Noelle the thorn ring. To me, it feels like a point-of-no-return. Like something that you cannot come back from.
It is easy to abandon the weird route in every chapter. As easy as missing an enemy, or using the wrong magic attack to defeat them or choosing the wrong dialogue option. The game gives you plenty of chances to stop, and not doing so requires explicit player action. The player must choose, at all points, to push forward in the weird route.
I think it would be interesting if that flips next chapter.
I think it would be interesting if, instead of it being easy to end the weird route in chapter 5, abandoning the route becomes the more difficult path.
If the player is still on the weird route, they must have taken every opportunity before this to maintain the path forward. The game concedes to this meticulous behavior, and changes to accommodate.
Now, missing an npc, or a dialogue choice, or doing something out of order will lock you into the weird route permenantly. Instead there are a specific set of difficult to achieve and perhaps convoluted steps you have to make if you want to pull yourself away. This is the last chance to turn back, and you have to want it.
If you continue to persist still, then the reason chapter 6 and 7 are not on that list is because there are no more chances. There are no more ways to affect how this story reaches its conclusion. The player is locked permanently into the weird route path, and whatever the consequences of that path might lead too.
I do not think this will actually happen. It just seems strange to me that, with the requirements of the weird route the website seems to show it just ends after chapter 5. So I speculated on what could happen instead. It would be fun though. It was fun to write.
