One of the most insidious forms of ableism that I’ve seen become more and more normalized is opposition to deforestation. The fact of the matter is, forests are super ableist, and that wood can always be put to better use.
Plants produce pollen, which can be immensely triggering to allergy sufferers and can force people with allergies inside for weeks at a time each year.
Wood can be used to build wheelchair ramps, a vital resource for disabled people everywhere.
When’s the last time you saw an ADA-compliant hiking trail? Forests are not accessible to wheelchair users and people with mobility issues.
Next time you see someone using the “protect the forests” dogwhistle, don’t hesitate to call them out on it. Ignorance is a disease, but knowledge and reeducation can be a cure.
