You know, I actually used to be afraid of snakes. Not like, deathly afraid or to the point of a phobia, but I thought snakes were gross and scary. I used to work at a preschool as a teacher-in-training, about six years ago, and I distinctly remember that one time, our teacher arranged for a guy with a bunch of animals to come visit and teach the kids about them. And he brought this BIG snake who took all the kids and some of the other teachers to hold up. Some of them were fine with it, but me? I was kinda freaked out and hung back like, āAhahah, no, no, thatās fine, I donāt want toā.
But in the past year, Iāve been visiting pet stores whenever Iām around them, so that I can look at and hold snakes, and Iāve even had no problem at all with an adult corn snake slithering over my face on top of my glasses. I recently watched a program talking about deadly creatures, and one of them was an Amazonian anaconda, and I couldnāt tear my eyes away from the screen because they are so beautiful. Iām planning on getting a pet snake when I move out; I cannot get enough of snakes.
And what inspired this change?? Snake. Snake from Black Butler. I adore him so much, and at first I was kind of weirded out by all his snakes. But then, one day, I decided to look up snake behavior and snakes as pets, because I was just so into Snake that I wanted to know more about snakes and not shy away from them. You know what I found out? Snakeās personality makes sense. Heās intense and appears threatening, but heās actually very shy and sensitive and easily surprised. Thatās how most snakes are. Even some of the venomous ones. And even if some species tends to be aggressive, theyāre not the killing machines everybody thinks they are. Most of them just want to be left alone. Theyāre not just sitting around waiting for the moment to strike people. And, while I acknowledge that there are a lot of people with a phobia or dislike of snakes, and thatās okay, snakes arenāt really ugly or scary or anything like I used to think. Theyāre gorgeous, amazing animals who are smarter than people give them credit for.
I love Snake so much, and this is just one of the reasons why. His character was powerful enough to help turn me from a jittery teenager who didnāt even want to be around a snake to a woman who now loves the feeling of a snake draping themself over my shoulders. His character affected me enough that I wanted to understand snakes rather than continue being afraid of them.
This turned into a huge rant, lol, but... I guess the main point is let characters excite you. Let them inspire you to do things. Let them be a positive influence in your life. Even though theyāre not real, the changes they can inspire in you for the better are real. If you get a whim to research something because of a character, to take a chance -- as long as youāre not harming yourself or anyone else, go for it.
