Mobula is a deep-sea dweller hovering above the surface of the water.
Mobula, or stags (Latin Mobula) is a genus of cartilaginous fish of the eagle ray family. Outwardly, they are very similar to their larger relatives - mantas. The size variation of representatives of this genus of rays is great. It ranges from one meter for the smallest species to a five-meter disc width - for a large Mediterranean stag, whose weight is more than a ton. Thanks to the wing-like fins, rays swim quickly. In addition to the ability to swim superbly, Mobula can fly. They often jump out of the water for several meters, from time to time making one after another whole series of jumps. Why do mobulas jump out of the water? Scientists' opinions on this topic are divided: some argue that this is how the male mobula attracts a female during the mating season. Others say that this is how they get rid of parasites. And others insist that mobulas are simply having fun in their "flights".
Mobulas live in tropical and subtropical waters of all oceans. Large species prefer to lead a solitary life. Smaller representatives of the family form large schools. Such schools can be found, for example, off the coast of South America. The main diet of mobulas is crustaceans, small fish and zooplankton. This ray has a large, spiny tail, which is considered a weapon for self-defense. Unfortunately, these bird-fish are endangered species. Their numbers are rapidly declining due to commercial fishing.
