Rich Widow seeks New Love in Bachelorette Challenge

After 13 years Agatha is Looking to Marry Again

At the age of 18, Agatha Amur became the youngest and wealthiest widow in society when her husband died just days after their wedding. According to the autopsy, Cinder Amur passed away at the age of 27 from a heart complication. However, many speculate that it wasn't his heart, but actually his new bride that brought about his death.

Since then, Agatha has spent her time mingling with the upper crust, traveling to exotic locations and increasing her fortune through questionable means. According to the rumors, Agatha has continued the Amur family's work in the underworld. Nothing has ever been confirmed though, but it is believed that she was the center of several investigations involving theft and possibly even murder.

Here’s my semi-spoilery review for Not Her Daughter written by Rea Frey. No major plot lines given away other than what’s revealed on the back of the book anyways. 

Not Her Daughter was a change of pace from my usual type of read. I wouldn’t call it a thriller, mystery, or psychological novel. It was just a fantastic, thoughtful, and insightful story that I really enjoyed reading. Not Her Daughter tells the story of Emma Townsend who is subjected to cruel and abusive behavior from her mother Amy. Sarah Walker is Emma’s kidnapper, or rescuer? The novel explores this question and is told from the perspective of Sarah and Amy, flipping between time periods of before, during, and after the kidnapping. This story-telling worked slightly well but I found it to be frustrating and hard to follow along with during the first part of the book. I’ve read plenty of other books with a similar writing style such as Gone Girl or In a Dark, Dark, Wood, but I think if this novel was written straightforward from beginning to end it would be just as amazing and maybe even more so. Chapters are simply labeled “before / during / after  / now” and are from either Amy’s or Sarah’s point of view. What confused me most was that nothing was told in chronological order until the second half of the book. For example, one chapter labeled “during” would entail exactly what was happening during the kidnapping. And the very next chapter would also be labeled “during” but it would be taking place days, weeks, or even months before the previous chapter! So even within the “before/during/after” time was constantly jumping around which made it hard to keep track of the timeline. I do believe the book could have worked even better if it was told straight through. 

Something else I found a little odd was that Sarah’s chapters were told in first person while Amy’s chapters were told in third person. I found it odd because I assume the point of telling the story from both women’s perspectives was to humanize them and gain more insight on their characters, yet only Sarah’s was told in first-person. Still, I think the author did a great job at building all of the characters and allowing their thoughts, emotions, and feelings to seep through the page. We got to hear both women’s past experiences and things that made them who they were.

Echo was originally a nymph, but after her love, Narcissus, rejected her and wasted away, she too faded into nothing and was drained of all magic. Now, centuries later, Echo has begun to find her voice again. 

Age- Centuries old, no real way to tell.

Gender- Agender, but uses neutral/femme pronouns.

Species- Nymph, though drained of powers so practically human except for a lack of aging.

Place of Residence- The woodlands on the outskirts of the Enchanted Forest.

How would you describe yourself? How would your friends/family describe you?

Describe yourself...Sorry. I...ummm...sorry. I...a lot of people tell me I’m quiet. Shy, that’s the word they normally use. I’m not too good at...talking. I’m working on it...but it’s been a while. I guess you could say I’m a bit of a hopeless romantic...at least, it was a bit hopeless last time...it’s made me bit...well, I think about things a lot...brooding, people call it. 

Aside from that, back...back before everything, I loved the outdoors. The trees, the fresh air and the mountainside flowers. More than anything, I loved the water. 

People in this world, they find my ears weird. They think my pale colouring is odd...they don’t understand that it’s because I was drained. The faint pink returning now...that’s the light returning to my soul. Until a few years ago, I was almost translucent. 

What is your favourite genre of music/favourite colour/favourite word?

- I’ve recently found the joys of ‘classical’...it reminds me of home, and yet is somehow still so new to me. 

-The colour of bluebells, hovering on the line between blue and purple.

- Empyrean: the highest part of heaven, thought by the ancients to be the realm of pure fire.

Romantic Past?

Only...only him. I’d rather not talk about him...it should have already been mentioned.

Why Did You Enter?

I’ve been alone for centuries, floating through space as a repeating voice- doomed to be alone, seeing others age and flourish around me. Now that I am regaining myself, I think it is time to open myself up to love again in this modern world. I don’t know much about this...bachelorette challenge...but any new experiences are going to be good, right?
