It is still so wildly freeing every time I re-remember that I don’t have to write scenes I don’t want to write.
If I want to tell the reader something but don’t really want to get into the how thing of it, I always do have the option to just tell the reader. I don’t have to show them everything. Especially if I don’t find it interesting.
Because a super poignant piece of advice I recently read that has really resonated with me is that if you don’t find a scene or piece of your writing interesting enough to write or even read while you are editing, then the reader pry won’t either.
I have this scene in my fic I’m writing that I was slogging through because I didn’t find it that interesting but felt lazy if I just summed up what happened in a paragraph. And the whole time I felt bogged down by feeling like I had writer’s block. But then when skipping to a scene I had much more interest in, I wrote 400 words in like 10 minutes. Which was huge for me when I was worrying I had lost passion for my writing when in actuality I had just put myself in an arbitrary box that was keeping me from creating something I actually wanted to create.
I feel nearly euphoric to almost literally just put the summary I had for the scene in for it instead and moving on to parts of the story that make me happy to write them.
