On a predestined path with all stops planned ahead like a string tram tracks tie routes that are never led by the same person twice, from Fitzroy to the bay from the Parliament house to Chinese takeaway. “All aboard!” rigs the bell at the heart of the town clicking heels, dragging feet feet make their way ‘cross the grounds “You’re all welcome it’s free, we’ll now make our old round We’ll ride straight through the city, there’s much to be found. No two station’s the same”, said to pattering feet Through the windows all gaze at the bustling street for all reasons they board and of all type they are different faces, all new, gaze at others afar. Different thoughts float above as the quarters pass by, We assume thoughts of love for the woman that cries, And the couple in arm, with their twinkling smiles then again we can’t know as show often beguiles And the man all in grey, in the suir what of he? His expression is sour from the file on his knee, Or perhaps from a call that he has not received, And the beggar-man grins though in his place we’d grieve. There’s delight in the veiled faces of three young girls enraptured they gape at such a different world, While besides them in sunlight streaming through the panes the cameras click before that same light wanes. For as eavening draws near so de we to the sea, to the glittering green that brought ships to where we now comfortably stand, yet hear no laping waves only rumbling street cars, car engins and trains. In the same way we now hear nothing of the gold that drew settlers hear, men that were brave and bold, And of all different cultures, and ranks and countries That carved out a home from the sand bush and gum-trees And yet we still hear of the nations they brought, and with bits and pieces a city was wrought which stands strong as iron with all the best parts of Asia and Europe, Aboriginal art Hand in hand with graffiti lines brick walls in lanes alive in the night, no two alley’s the same So wander down wearing what you feel is best Drink on a rooftop, join in with the rest, As eavning sets in amongst flowering vines Smells from all kitchens waft in with your wine As buskers play jazz, one-step, blues and rag-time throught laughter you hear the tram bell ringing time. -Emma Dailey (feb 28th 2014, Melbourne)
