Safe spaces are everywhere
I was listening to this podcast by Dharmapunx and he talked about 12 step programs as a way to be with suffering in a safe place. He called the safe place a “container.”
MLA8 is a new citation method that also makes use of a “container” (see here), and it’s easy to connect this to the concept of safe spaces. A peer-reviewed journal is a safe space for facts, for theories, the BBC is a safe place for news. For articles to be themselves, free of the haze of trolls and doubters and judgers.
Conceptually, at least. Scholarship is conversation, conversation happens between texts as it does between people.
SJW “safe spaces,” too, are supposed to function this way. They’re much maligned by keeping things out, but their real purpose is to let things in. Secrets. Pain. Truth.
We need these containers. Gatekeepers. Even if they’re infantilizing. That’s the point. Start here. Build upward.
