The Moon and I
*This is a poem I wrote a week or so ago, and I think I've shared it with like, 3 or 4 people. I never entered it into the Poetry class workshop, so it does need some criticism :)
Last night, while you were sleeping,
Ā the moon and I made a pact:
he'll stop the reckless tide from bringing in
the dangerous waters
and I, I will be his daughter,
craters tatooed on my skin,
frozen eyes glowing with his radiance.
Ā You see, I wanted to be like wendy
forget about peter and
puff out my chest like a grown up,
butĀ it's not that easy.
I've got veins filled with stardust,
tears blackened by the charcoal we burn with
fires spreading to submerge my
innocence and the ashes
smell like your childhood,
a story I've tried to write down,
the ink staining your heart,
drawing the walls of the chamber
which jails your greatest fears from my grasp.
Ā So I was hoping,
hoping that if I'd become like the moon
you'd open your soul like the wolves at night
and you would listen,
listen to how I wanted us to be a comet,
otherworldly and untouchable,
daring to scrape against
the boundaries of this world
because we can.
Ā But you're trailing empty bottles behind you,
and you're still divided by the hourglass,
waiting for her to come back
and you won't tell me where it hurts.
So I've got to let you go,
Ā and sit the million endless midnights through
with the moon.

Collision (a slam poem from way back when)
Moving faster than the speed of love
Running in front of my bullet train
Youāre scared of our collision.
Prepared to duck
Hoping Iāll miss
Or out of luck barely scratch the surface
Of the armor youāre worried
Will shatter with my touch
Ā Iām begging you to
Open your eyes,
Our road is a dead end
Why not collide
While we still have the time?
Then weāll be able to say
That we had our chance
Enjoyed our moments.
Let the gears slowly drop,
Fall into neutral,
When the racehorse is fired up
Ready to go
I want you to be the jockey
Pulling on the reins
Saying,
āLetās take this slow.ā
Ā Weāre going to have arguments
Decisions forced upon each other
As if they meant life or death
Baby,
I want our biggest
Problem to be
Whether to buy
Milky Way or Snickers.
At the grocery store
I want the people in line behind us
Sighing in frustration
As we take our lovely time
Arguing about chocolate bars.
Ā For me,
Itāll always be Milky Way
Because when I look up at the sky
I think of you,
The first person to point the stars out to me
You told me to,
Connect the dots,
Draw myself on godās canvas
Ā I tried connecting those dots today.
Struggling to engrave my face
Against the black backdrop
Of a lonely night.
But everyone knows that the
Hardest person to draw
Is yourself
Every inch of your body
Covered in imperfections
Others never see.
Ā I tried to draw you,
A face I can see clearly
Pure and unblemished
But This wasnāt Godās canvas
To give
Ā My hand dropped limply next to me When it realized before my heart did
That my blood wasnāt the perfect shade
For your portrait
A painting I wasnāt meant to sign away
With years of my life
If anything
I only drew the sketch
Leaving you vulnerable
To the world
Ā I pray that someone will pick up
Where I left off
Converting rough outlines
Into a masterpiece
Because you donāt deserve
Anything less than breathtaking.
And whoever it is,
When they complete you
Youāll find that you donāt need me anymore
Ā Iāll stop being your seamless outline
Iāll carry the imprint of your heart
Against my side
Remembering
When we collided
And just because we werenāt a supernova
Doesnāt mean the world didnāt see
How bright we used to shine
Even if it was for one
Glimpse at the sky
Ā I am
Hoping that one day
We can forgive ourselves
For plucking heartbeats from our chest
So that we wouldnāt have to feel it hurt
Pulling love out of the question
Numbing our bodies for the crash
We expected from the start
This was a risk
I begged you to take
Now you have to learn
How to do it all over again
Ā I donāt want you to regret
Wasting precious seconds on the past
I want you to trust someone to fly you to
Jupiterās moons
So that the earth looks like a regular star
I want you to see itās all the same.
Weāre all just a dot in the sky
For someone elseās pen
To draw someone elseās
Face
Maybe this time,
Theyāll match your shade.
