jo(an/hanna/sie/whichever we choose to call her, i personally use jo or joan but i love whatever others have come up with) & argyle make good friends because argyle has none and jo is reminded constantly by her siblings that the move will be easier if she has someone her own age to hang out with.
argyle thinks her mission in life the moment she sees dreary downtrodden jo is to be in her's in some way. jo is the only person in their local woodworking class who so much as even acknowledges her. it's tough at first because jo misses nathan, still has to recover from everything season 3 related, has to adjust to a new family dynamic and figure out what it is she plans on making of herself now that she's approaching young adulthood. argyle just so happens to align with her interests. they both have hobbies related to the arts, they both love animals, both at times have a twisted sense of humor.
jo however does not stop lamenting about nathan and how she feels the two of them drifting. argyle kind of wants to kill him. jo is so perfect in her eyes and has so many talents and so many things going for her that she should be able to cast her hand out into the darkness and materialize a boyfriend immaculate conception style. argyle tries to fill that void for her by being there when she needs to vent and putting up with her girl-going-through-a-sexual-liberatio-via-getting-high-and-handsy-with-her-only-other-female-friend phase and she thinks one day she'll be enough that jo needs for her to forget about nathan entirely. this will never happen unfortunately jo & nathan are cosmically intertwined in ways not yet explanable to argyle yet, whether or not theyre platonic about it issssssss up to the 10 years in the future version of all three of them.
argyle is definitely for sure jo's safe place. she likes getting to know how exactly her brain works, what her home life is like, what it's like for her being gay (if she can tell with will/ow she can tell with the woman she spends 90% of her time with), every minute observation she has on the world. lazy afternoons in argyle's van end up being all jo needed to reroot herself into a new scene. sure she's ignoring a few of her home responsibilities and not looking for a job while they're in cali, but thats not bad for her for the time being! she's being young and turnt! she's forgetting her hawkins routine! she's falling in love with a WOMAN and not knowing it until it's time to say goodbye to her when her childhood home is under quarantine by the government!
