I don’t think Kale truly understands how touch starved he is, imo my hc is I think he’s convinced himself throughout his life that he’s fine as is and distanced himself emotionally from others to the point of misanthropy, but deep down he so desperately needs human connection and he can’t articulate it to himself (he doesn’t have that kind of honest introspection).
Anyways here comes MJ who latches onto the wrong type of people, and Kale is kind of a rebound from MJs dumpster fire dating history and I think MJ underestimated how much he ended up genuinely loving Kale (even if it isn’t for the healthiest of reasons). As emotionally burdened as both of them are, they need each other. Kale needs someone who’s explicit and bombastic about their love for him, and MJ needs someone who doesn’t interpret his love languages as love bombing.

This is gonna be a long post in response to the prompt @the-hungdeli-hermit mentioned here! MJ's fully invested in his career as a musician, and each album represents important eras of his life- and with that, they're all going to have their own themes. He's a versatile artist who doesn't like being limited to one genre, and I'm still trying to build the full details of each album, but for NOW I'll share a "sample platter" of his music below
Made this mini comic as a foil to the post I made where MJ and Kale talk about Roxanne. Unlike uh, the complicated baggage Kale has with his own mother- MJ is quite close with his Tia Cam (who's his unofficial surrogate crime mama when he lived in the concrete jungle of the Big Apple as a broke teen).
MJ always overestimates the level of coddling Cam might have when he makes stupid decisions, but he was relieved to find that she was very chill when he introduced her to Kale, despite her... knowing... everything about how they met. Cam knows how MJ's gang stole half a billion dollars from Vandelay Technologies to fund their digital vigilantism and how MJ got sidetracked with hooking up and accidentally falling in love with this corrupt CEO who exploded, lost his position, and is really pathetic now. 🥀
Teasing and jabs aside, Cam has a very "laissez-faire" attitude, and right now all that matters to her is that Kale treats her adopted street-urchin son well. With great amicability, she invited Kale to her next cookout- but he's not exactly ready to be around a lot of people right now, and MJ's aware that Kale still needs to acclimate before he can mingle with tough-skinned working-class folks.💀
(In the future... if- IF Kale can be humbled, MJ thinks it'd be nice for him to join a cute little cookout with all of MJ's loved ones. Especially since MJ learned that's something he never experienced growing up. Despite having a middle-class upbringing in the suburbs before Vandelay's success, Kale had a lot of responsibilities in his formative years and never had the chance to enjoy life's simple pleasures like a block cookout.)
