Translating the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Fanbook! Article 21
Masterpost
Note, while this was the final article in the main set for the original trilogy, there are still a couple of extra ones to follow up!
Final Farewell
Phoenix and the others have come to the airport to see Edgeworth off on his journey. Itâs time to say goodbye to Ace Attorney too. A special chapter written for the fanbook!Â
Pearl: Mr Nick, this way! Hurry up!Â
Maya: Good luck, Prosecutor Edgeworth!Â
Edgeworth: Iâm very grateful you came all the way to the airport to see me off.
Pearl: Uhm. How long until you come back
Edgeworth: I donât know for sure⊠roughly in three years, I expect?
Phoenix: Thatâs quite a while. Will your inspection really take that long?
Edgeworth: In all likelihood. I plan to tour legal communities around the world.
Maya: As a memento until we meet again, please give me that fluttering thing on your chest!Â
Pearl: Kyah! I want one too!Â
Maya: Ah. Of course, one for Nick too. Thatâs three of them.
Edgeworth: No way! Without this, people wonât know who I amâŠ
Maya: Pleaseee! Or, alternatively, how about the second button from your shirt?
Edgeworth: T-the second button
Maya: See. Pearly can have the first button, and Nick can also get the third one!
Edgeworth: No way! Wouldnât my shirt end up all fluttery?
Maya: Well. Thatâs fine, isnât it? It would match your fluttering chest
Edgeworth: But, itâs hardly as though âflutteringâ is the theme by which I live my life.Â
Maya: I could have sworn you lived for the fluttering.Â
Pearl: Ah. Please bring me a souvenir when you go on a trip too, Mr Nick!Â
Phoenix: B-but I donât plan on taking any trips.
Maya: Iâll show some restraint⊠with that old badge on your collar.Â
Edgeworth: Donât fight, thereâs only one to go around. That old badge, I mean.Â
Phoenix: Nah⊠Without this, nobody would know who I am.
Maya: âŠStingy.Â
*****
Pearl: I still donât see him yet⊠The whiskered Detective.Â
Phoenix: Youâve got some good in you too, you know. Offering to take him with you like that.
Maya: So Gumshoe is finally expanding overseas, huh? Iâm so jealous.Â
Edgeworth: Apparently his salary got cut again yesterday... I just so happened to overhear.
Phoenix: âJust so happenedâ... whose fault was it in the first place, huh?
Edgeworth: 'A leisurely trip overseas is a dream come trueâŠ' He said, with tears welling in his eyes.
Phoenix: Still, thatâs pretty generous of you. Youâre covering his travel expenses too, right?
Edgeworth: D-donât say such weird things. I managed to pull some strings and get it classed as a business trip.
Maya: You prosecutors sure can do anything, huh?Â
Phoenix: Itâs kind of late, though. Shouldnât you give him a call?
Maya: What if heâs still at home eating dinner?
Edgeworth: He had better not be! Boarding for this flight starts in 10 minutes.Â
Phoenix: But. We are talking about Detective Gumshoe, after all.
Edgeworth: It canât be helped⊠Iâll contact him.Â
Gumshoe: It⊠Itâs all gone wrong! Iâm finished!Â
Edgeworth: D-detective! Why⊠are you still at home?!Â
Gumshoe: Itâs nowhere! I canât find my boarding pass!Â
Maya: A crack appeared on Prosecutor Edgeworthâs foreheadâŠ
Edgeworth: What⊠What the hell are you doing?!Â
Gumshoe: Itâs been two hours nowâŠ. Uhooooogh!Â
Edgeworth: Hm? What is it?!Â
Gumshoe: Huh? What do you know? It was wedged under the phone receiver!Â
Edgeworth: How on earth⊠Did it end up thereeee?!?!
Maya: Woah⊠A crack appeared in Prosecutor Edgeworthâs phoneâŠ
Gumshoe: Itâs okay! Iâll be right there! Once Iâve finished eating!Â
Edgeworth: Tch! You had better pray your next performance review⊠never comes!Â
Maya: Thatâs rough, huh? Even as a prosecutor.Â
Edgeworth: I-it seems he⊠wonât be able to make it.
Phoenix: How do I put this? Your voice is pretty loud. I could hear every word.
Edgeworth: âŠHmph.
** * * *
Larry: Hey! *cough cough cough cough*
Maya: Ah! That voice⊠thatâs Larry!Â
Phoenix: Youâre being flaky. I thought you were in bed with a cold?
Larry: Whatâs with you, huh? Were you planning to just slip away without a word? Edgy!Â
Edgeworth: Are you⊠okay? Your face is extremely pale.
Larry: Yeah. I caught a nasty cold. From my girl Nobimubayai. (1)
Maya: Nobi⊠Huh? Which girl is that?
Phoenix: Youâve been going in a different direction recently, havenât you?
Larry: Donât be so cold! I even brought a present!
Maya: Huh!! Thatâs so thoughtful of you, Larry.Â
Edgeworth: But⊠no matter how I look at it, itâs like a handbraâŠ?
Larry: No. Itâs a âpoemâ. My gift to you.Â
Edgeworth: T-thank you for the effort⊠but Iâm not in the mood to listen to a manâs poem.Â
Phoenix: Itâs alright. Go ahead and recite something thatâll really get under his skin.
Larry: Alright. Listen carefully⊠Ahem.Â
Sa d to see you goÂ
Yo ur next dawn is nearÂ
Na rly tears to wipe awayÂ
Ya nk that trumpetÂ
Phoenix: Whatâs this? Why have you written it so weirdly?
Larry: Hm? Ah. Thereâs a trick to this âpoemâ. Like magic.Â
Pearl: Magic trick
Larry: Pick out the first letters on each line of the poem, and read them vertically.Â
Maya: Okay, so⊠âsaâ âyoâ ânaâ âraâ... Ah. I see! (2)
Edgeworth: W-what an absurd display of passion. F-fine then. I suppose I should say thanks.Â
Maya: Hah⊠Ah! Prosecutor Edgeworth, your eyes are welling up!Â
Phoenix: This guy⊠Heâs just not so good with those âheartwarmingâ presents.Â
Maya: Ah⊠Come to think of it, Shu Takumi didnât show up in the end, huh?
Pearl: I was really looking forward to seeing him again after so long.Â
Phoenix: He did say something like, since this is the last time, Iâll say my goodbyes!Â
Larry: No⊠Actually, it looks like he said his goodbyes properly.
Phoenix: W-what do you mean?
Larry: Well, Iâm not entirely sure. But he said the hint was âpoetryâ. (3)
Phoenix: Hm⊠I do like Shu Takumi and his⊠magic tricks.Â
Maya: Well, maybe you should read it again. Start from the beginning.Â
Phoenix: Anyway. Itâs about time. I can hear the announcement.Â
Edgeworth: Well then⊠I suppose I should head out soon.Â
Phoenix: A temporary farewell, then? âŠTake care, Edgeworth.
Larry: Hey. Iâm counting on you guys. Now, and in the future.
Edgeworth: Hm. Just because the curtain falls on this story⊠doesnât mean our lives come to an end.
Phoenix: âŠThatâs the way it is, huh?
Maya: The perfect way to wrap things up, as always. Well then, have a safe trip!
Notes:
(1) I just wrote out the katakana here in romaji. Sadly I don't really get this joke! It's similar to the other girlfriend name, though.
(2) I clearly had to mess around with the poem a bit. That said, this isn't too far off the vibe of what the original meaning was.
(3) Yeah so I know my own limits and attempting to not only understand, but translate, cyphers in Japanese is that limit I'm afraid :')
Also you have got to love Miles casually admitting to knowingly misusing public tax money...
