Whitby Students Brave the Cold Canadian Weather to Fundraise for their Fellow Classmates
WHITBY, ON- It was a frigid afternoon on February 6th, but that didn't stop 7 high school students who went to their local masjid after Friday prayer to sell food in order to fundraise towards an upcoming MIST competition.
The students, all members of the Muslim Student Association atAnderson Collegiate Vocation Institute, knew that the fee for the Muslim Interscholastic Tournament, which is a little over $50, would be too much for some interested students to pay. To solve this, they quickly set up a bake sale at the Masjid-e-Ayesha near their school.
“We just wanted to help out students who really want to go but can’t because their parents can’t afford the fee,” explains MSA president, Ajyah Hussain. “As our school’s MSA, we felt that it was our duty to help them out as much as we could so that more people could have the privilege to compete in a fun event alongside us!”
That doesn’t mean that it was easy. It was a busy time of year, and the students had to stay up until the early hours of the morning in order to bake and cook after a long night of studying or work.
“You know, it was hard and I felt like a zombie in the morning,” laughed 17-year-old Ayesha Ahmad. “Standing outside in the cold for hours to sell food wasn’t so fun either, but it was worth it. We raised more than we thought we would, and that means we can help more people go to MIST with us.”
The teens raised over $200, and were able to distribute this money to over 6 other students who are now competitors for the school’s team, Radioactive Revolution.
“You know, they could have just given their apologies and left us out of the competition when we said we couldn’t afford it, but they didn’t,” admitted one of the students who received financial aid. “Instead, out the kindness of their heart, they decided to help students like me even though they won’t gain anything from it. Well, at least that’s what others may think. Not me, though, because they have gained my gratitude and prayers for giving me this opportunity.”
