This poem was written to address violence against Aboriginal women in Canada.Aboriginal women are 3 times more likely to be a victim of violence. It speaks to the stereotypes/bias/beliefs that exist within individuals, larger society, and institutions that also enables this violence to continue
Within Structural Theory and in the Social Action Model, the society is made up of people and many integrated parts or Institutions that all keep the person or group stable.Â
When there is no order or is dysfunctional, the whole system suffers and fails. When we look at our Canadian Aboriginal Women, we can always link the stereotypes and bias remarks that Canada perceives on the whole society, and the mistreatment of these particular women.Â
The system of family teaches empathy for these young ladies and women to love one another and themselves. Of course there are times when this fails because of family abuse, neglect and worse of all abandonment that causes these girls to go into the Foster Care system.Â
The second biggest role that is plays in Aboriginal women is the culture. Culture plays a humongous role for Aboriginal women, because being a First Nations people you are taught traditional aspect of life as soon as you are born. You are given this ideology of the difference between right and wrong. It helps First Nations people to form their Collective Conscience; which is to promote the shared beliefs and moral attitudes which operate as a unifying force within society.Â
Although this lifestyle and moral beliefs are not "the norm" for the rest of Canadian society, First Nations people are knocked by stereotypes because they aren't Catholic or a different pigment.
Its always been a battle even though Canada prides themselves as being a multicultural society, the population cant get past bias, prejudice and discriminatory remarks and ideas that are carved in their stones from a young age. Mass Media also plays a big role, because it teaches us how to act a certain way and a way of thinking. This can be a way of socialization; this can be the societies way of putting Aboriginal women in a devalued group.Â
We can promote Justice and Positive Ideologies for Missing and Murdered Aboriginal Women by
It's time for a perspective shift, for Indigenous women to really and truly be seen, and for them to see themselves
Showing the Mass Media how much profound effects can come from people being aware of this problemÂ
Tear down social stereotypes; see this woman as your own Mother, Daughter, Sister, Aunt, or Niece.
Imagine a life without cultural imbalance, and teach the importance of Social Justice and Social Structural Model.
