Deli magic at Mishkin’s

I admit it, I lived in New York and never went to Katz’s. Oh the shame! I was too busy trying every taco joint.

Mishkin’s in Covent Garden is my first Reuben, another shock. And it was tastyyyy. Not a shock to most of you. I love that this place offers halves so that you can try something else without feeling like Augustus Gloop. I chose a small (more like medium, love it when that happens) mac and cheese which aided the digestion of a fascinating peacekeeping and conflict prevention lecture I’d been to at King’s across the road.

Miskins is definitely worth a revisit. I was too full (?!) for the pumpkin pie. End of this month, for sure.

Tim and I ate here in feb 14. Whilst the food was nice, it was certainly overpriced. £5 for half a sandwich?!? Staff rushed order and then forgot about us. Not asked if we were enjoying food or asked if we wanted more drinks. Drinks also overpriced and not particularly enjoyable (avoid beet root martini at all costs).

'A kind-of Jewish deli with cocktails'

Probably better described as Jew-ish then Jewish, this non-kosher eatery is a welcoming treat for all the senses. The retro Manhattan deli look is carried off excellently, whilst the blow-your-head-off cocktails packed a real punch: I had to restrain myself, lest one of my infamous 'gin rages' kick in.

Food-wise it was very, well, comforting. Haute cuisine this was not; bloody tasty it was. The chips - a Jewish staple no doubt - were nice n' chunky and the aubergine, spiced lentil and labneh (no idea) salad was fresh as you like. On the meat front things were rather more exciting, yet equally delicious. Mac n' cheese with salt beef and Colman's (kudos to anyone who realises the immorality of this dish) was an intriguing delight, but the star of the meal was the beef corn dogs with green tomato ketchup. 'Hmmmm green tomatoes...' Who's ever said this? No one. Yet it was truly a thing of beauty. I dipped corn dogs, chips, fingers: all much tastier with green tomato ketchup. I followed this with a very nice vanilla and blackberry cheesecake and a vanilla and malt milkshake. I bloody love vanilla.

And with that, this lyrical poet will get his coat and leave. Adios goys.

Meal for two, with drinks and service: c. £60

If your don't know about Mishkin's, then Frankly, you should. I was shown this "kind of Jewish deli with cocktails' the other week by my Mother and I can tell you right now that if you are around the Waterloo/Aldwych/Strand/Charing Cross/Covent Garden area and you want a delicious, and affordable, taste sensation that is a little different from your normal...look no further!

Between the two of us we had 3 things

1: Cod Cheek Popcorn

Which was as delicious as it sounds! very slightly spiced and with a welcome lemon wedge these make a great snack or starter

2: Salt Beef Macaroni Cheese

Cheesy, mustardy, beefy, salty...everything that would expect although I would have liked a little more of that burnt cheese you sometimes get on macaroni cheese and perhaps a little gooier underneath...pretty shitting tasty!

3: Rabbit, Paprika celeriac salad

This was such a surprise, I had resisted getting a salt beef anything to get off the beaten track, and It was incredibly, a leg of rabbit which was so soft and tender and fell off the bone in the most amazing way! Coupled with a salad of grated celeriac and pomegranate seeds there was a sweet crunchiness which complimented the creamy sauce on the rabbit perfectly!

Verdict: 8/10 I love finding out about new places and this gem is beautiful inside, with excellent, friendly staff and a varied menu to suit any budget/time of day/taste

However, I have said it is reasonably priced but for your average student budget I would recommend this place more as a treat, date, somewhere to go if your can get your parents to pay!
