jo, i need to know your opinion on the mad king play spoilers bc that thing is worse than the worse fanfic you can read on wattpad 💀
I took a couple of days to answer this because I really wanted to check you know the sources of the leaks and what not.
And now that even the cast pictures are released and the storylines pretty much confirmed I just going to say that...
George RR Martin is oficialy the creator, is in the official webpage https://www.rsc.org.uk/game-of-thrones-the-mad-king/cast-and-creatives
So there is no much to say, if this play has his approval, I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens.
But let's talk about some important parts of this...
Elia: Her being a political mastermind is no farfetched, she is a Martell, her House is known for seeing politics (and in enheritances) differently than the other most conservative, patriarchal and structural families of Westeros. Her being married to the crown prince of Westeros and being send there to King's Landing (enemy territory basically) like a naive woman who couldn't fend for herself not even politically was -on our part- quite misogynistic hahaha jokes on us I guess... NOW her being agreeable with that clown Rhaegar in him having other wife and whatever? that I don't buy, again, she is a Martell, where they have glorified bastards and more liberal ways of living, but I don't see HOW the existence of other woman in the picture could benefit her, now, they painted the Martells "we don't hurt little girls in Dorne" is that it might give her that naivity too, that sounds about right now that I'm putting it in writing. Her own brother had hundreds of bastards that were treated like princes and princesses, and I don't remember correctly but a couple of his baby mammas were on the picture, so again, that part is not farfetched
Prophesy obsession: That Rhaegar is obsessed with the prophecy is quite accurate. But remember that those D&D clowns took 60% of the prophecies and magic from the series, so only book readers know how important these elements are to the stories, I never finished the books, but even I know about the power of the prophesies. NOW that he dragged Lyanna AND Elia with him?? whack. That they communicate through dreams? whack. TF if Lyanna? the Virgin Mary? bringing the savior into the world? (I'm a catholic, I don't like that)
Lyanna: f*cking Lyanna I don't like her, because rather she is like the series wrote her, she willingly went with Rhaegar even knowing about everything, even about what happened to her family, but again Rhaegar wasn't his father, they were all in it (apparently) to try to regain control over the Kingdoms from a mad king. Why didn't she send a fucking letter? I don't know. Maybe she wanted the rebellion, again, this was a mad King, in that regard we just have to wait and see. Rhaegar took her, him being the perfect prince as they painted him, by Ser Barristan who saw everything that was going on with the royal family. But I see her, giving all the magical aspect, do believing in the prophecy and wanted to aid in it conclusion, specially Rhaegar being who he was (again the perfect prince, gallant, handsome, good) Her being of the old lineage of Starks, always connected to ancient magic, I do buy it, if done correctly. Starks had their own brand of dreamers, and prophecies, maybe they make theirs and the Targaryen's connect? again it will have to be really well done. It is hard to accomplish since now we don't even know what is canon anymore, HOTD? GOT? th books? I don't really know if this play connects more to the book or will try to connect all of it like gorilla glue, I really hope they pull it off.
(I want to write in here that "yes she was fourteen" but as we have seen from the books GRRM have this obsession with little girls and boys doing adult things (why he didn't age up the characters, I mean, is it fiction and a world of his own making) but since he wrote the rules, I judge teenagers as adults because they are forced to do adult things. Let's just pretend they are all adults (again I don't understand why they aren't, agesism? I truly don't know)
The proximity (physical affection) between Ned and Robert? I can't fathom to live in a world where two man (close friends btw who were practically raised together) cannot embrace of seek comfort in each other just for their peace of mind and not just to hump like animals, we are human beings, we NEED deep connections. And I hope we can see their bond of friendship like it is and not sexualize EVERYTHING like you want to fuck all your friends? get help. If they entail they were something more? well... it isn't rare, MANY historical figures specially in medieval times had us second guessing... "but they are turning everyone gay and poc" well that's just the world we live in. We are all in this together like High school musical perfectly said.
Aerys: he was MAD, not only because being a Targaryen, he was imprisoned and tortured FOR YEARS, his mind was warped by deception, treason, physical torture. Him sending Robert a model of his parents ship all destroyed? WILD but he was Westeros Nr One rage baiter at that point. Lets remember (and condemn) that the rebellion didn't happen because of a lie (fy Bran Stark, die alone you weirdo) it happened because of years of political inestability, the killing of thounsands because of a whim, the murder of members of important families just because, again THERE WAS A MAD KING IN THE HOUSE PEOPLE. IT IS CANON that Rhaegar "was going to do something about it" when he returned from the trident. and Aerys madness went over for years, he saw what he did to his mother and all, if I was Rhaegar I would have try to overthrown him too, even if he was my father, he was a danger to EVERYONE in king's Landing and not even the great families were safe from his lunacy.
That Rhaella turned wicked, celebrated the deaths oft he Starks and wished for a vengeful daughter? its sad that they will villanize her story in that way, but again, she was r*ped, tortured by her own brother/husband for years, it wouldn't be farfetched either. But again, it makes me sad.
I forgot a bunch of points, but let's start with this ones.
