funeral sciences??? for real??? if you're serious can you tell me about that because that's the coolest shit i've heard and now i'm super interested
Hey!!! Absolutely I’ll talk for ages about it lmao
The school I’m attending is Commonwealth Institute. It’s one of the few in the country that are only for funeral sciences (they do the “gen-ed” in the beginning so as to make sure the Associate’s we’re getting are legal lmaooo).
Commonwealth teaches....everything in the field, really. From embalming to running a funeral home, to the history of funeral sciences overall. And it helps that we have the only official funeral history museum in the country (so far).
Anyway, each school varies, and Commonwealth does its studies in nine-week “quarters.” The first quarter (where I currently am) is dedicated to the gen-ed, and the second is more “business”-y, where we learn how to operate the business and all that jazz. The second quarter is where we start getting into the specialized courses, too.
The third quarter is much like the second, with Business Law and Sociology and Mortuary Administration thrown in. This is also when we start “officially” learning how to embalm (I use quotations because Carnes has been so nice as to let some of us sit in on embalmings way before this so we really don’t go in without knowing jackshit lmao).
Fourth quarter is continuing on from third, but!!!!! we start Restorative Art classes and we get to make faces for a grade.
Fifth and final quarter is when we finish up everything; classes and licenses, as well as starting the National Board Exam (eep). The really cool thing about Commonwealth is that they’re completely willing to help us get our certifications and licenses, since there’s literally only like twenty or thirty people per class lmao.
If you want more on my exciting time at school, I’ve got like two posts in my Commonwealth Stories tag P:
