Thoughts on intradiegetic/Watsonian versus extradiegetic/Doylist?
I think both have their place in media criticism. Personally, I tend to prefer Watsonian explanations (but I think that’s from my background as a fanfic write for so many years.) While Doylist explanations may be more honest sometimes, I find them less satisfying.
What would you call the darkest official Mario occurrence?
Probably that Sammer Kingdom incident from Super Paper Mario I implied in that post, followed by when the Shroobs fucking massacred this cutesy little Christmas village in Partners in Time.
But yeah, a lot of people forget, Mario’s series does do dark stuff, it just more does it in terms of being weird; tragic and existential rather than being needlessly edgy. Like, it does Return To Oz dark not Todd McFarlane dark is what I’m sayin’...
