On Understanding Narrative Mirrors
Mirroring in narrative is a technique where the creatives use one story, or one character or set of characters, to reflect, comment on and add dimensions to another. I often see discussions about which character mirrors which in SPN meta. And no question, SPN uses mirroring a lot. However, this technique does not have to be a straight up “this reflects this” deal. Often, it is fragmentary and multi-faceted, like the reflections on the surface of water. And just as water ripples many times over from one drop, it can be multiple.
So for example, in SPN 10x15, Cole is a Dean-mirror, in that he is possessed of an evil creature (as Dean is by the Mark of Cain), but he overcomes it (yay for the eventual outcome for Dean) and his tattoo “Strength to Change” suggests one of the keys to this for Dean. But, Cole is also a John Winchester mirror, calling the Winchesters by their diminutives (Sammy and Deano), a veteran who fights monsters but who manages to put down his quest for revenge (mirrors can shine a light by key differences as well as by key similarities). Cole is also a mirror for Dean’s (repressed) desire for men in 10x15 - he thirsts to drink Dean’s blood, he asks to be tied to a chair by Dean, they share a “sweat lodge in the woods”. All together, Cole is a hopeful mirror for the Winchesters (so far). He overcomes monster-hood, he does John Winchester differently (and better) and Dean saves (accepts) him..
