Smith
Minus-Plus
@ 1970 US Pressing
*****
Excellent sound quality on this rare and musically diverse album from Smith. Gayle McCormick's vocals are upfront in the mix and she always more than delivers. The songs are great, including Carole King's "What Am I Gonna Do?" and Smith originals, "Born in Boston" (sounds a bit like a poppier Steppenwolf!) and the title cut really rock. The thoughtful ballad "Comin' Back To Me" is pretty and the Civil War story song "Jason" is very unique and sports one of the most powerful bridges in pop music! A must if you like dynamic rock-pop!
Smith, the late-60s act featuring Gayle McCormick's fantastic vocals, is another band whose second album I've only recently come across. Their debut album, A Group Called Smith, is one of my favourite psychedelic records, and this one, Minus-Plus, has already claimed a lot of my listening time. They still had this weird tendency to under-use McCormick. The guys aren't bad singers exactly, but it just seems crazy not to sub her in on a verse occasionally.
