Do you remember being free? Roaming the yards around the house without adult supervision, with an army of friends. Preparing coffee with water and dirt. Making money out of leaves. And I am not using the “” on purpose. No, these things were real. Real in our imagination that had no limits. I remember how 10 of us were building a city in a sandpile for a neighbour’s hamster. No arguments, lots of imagination and One mission for all. To build a city for a hamster with bedrooms, food stores, labyrinth of streets and watch towers. And save him from accidental ceiling collapses which the hamster caused by digging into the ground in an attempt to escape. That’s the freedom I saw in a small village of Cotu people in central Vietnam, somewhere towards the Lao border. These are the thoughts I woke up to on the floor of a community house at 5 am, listening to hassle and bustle of the tribe. The kids got their hands on a ritual drum and were running around the yard, shrieking and laughing. That’s the freedom children in our cozy well-off worlds don’t have anymore. What a loss. Why do you think it disappeared? It seems to me that the world is not any more dangerous than it used to be, only our awareness of it thanks to the internet.
