Minitel, also known as the internet is a globe-spanning communication network. It was developed in Brittany, Fance by Eurotel, the European Federation's state telecommunications provider in the late 1970's. Over a million terminals were sold by 1986 and by 1989, all of western Europe was using Minitel.
By 1996 Minitel was being used for everything from online banking, communication and news. In 1998 Eurotel cooperated with their North American counterpart, NorCom to create Ameritel, the North American equivalent to Minitel. By 2002, all of North America was conneted.
A Central and South American version, called SurNet was created in 2001.
