SOCIAL MEDIA QUEEN OF CHINA SHUTS HER WECHAT ACCOUNT
Recently Mimeng, China’s social media star who published larger than life narratives and had a fan following of 13 million was made to shut her official WeChat account. The reason was a fake story that was published which was condemned by the state media.Mimeng is popular as she regularly published blog posts and writing on relationships, marriages and financial matters. She came under the state media scanner as she drew a lot of flak for the story of a young man who died at the age of 24 due to cancer.
The story is about ‘the plight of a poverty-stricken young man who receives education from one of China’s best universities, but due to lack of unemployment dies at a young age. Many users had doubts regarding the authenticity of the story. There has been a conscious effort by the Chinese Government to clean online content.
Earlier on Mimeng had published stories on topics like “Yes it’s true I love Money ” and “How much money you have to spend to become a Goddess” attracted 10,000 views. However, the closure of the account drew mixed reactions from followers some of who claimed to have benefitted. There are strict regulations imposed by authorities in China when it comes to publishing content online. Almost 98,000 social media accounts have been closed due to unethical and fake news as a part of the cleanup drive.
