Mimaki shows TraPis textile prints at Fespa
At this yearās Fespa event, Mimaki showed off an interesting pigment transfer concept that it first previewed at last yearās ITMA show, which it calls TraPis, standing for TRAnsfer Pigment System.
The idea is to print an image onto transfer paper and then transfer it in a calendar heat press, which is essentially the same process as for dye sublimation. But the difference is that the image is not sublimated into the fibers of the material and instead sits on the surface, as with most pigment ink textile solutions.
Marc Verbeem, supervisor of product management at Mimaki Europe, says that this gives it a textured finish, and so itās mostly suitable for home decor such as pillows or towels rather than apparel. It has all the certification required to produce clothing but Verbeem says that the texture is not so comfortable to wear. Also, the ink will only survive 5-10 washing cycles, which is fine for home decor use but not nearly good enough for clothing.
He explains, āThe advantage is that you can use any type of fabric without needing any form of pretreatment.ā It will work with cotton, wool, nylon and even polyester. That said, the material does have to be able to withstand at least 150°C heating in the calendar. More heat generally improves the washability but too much heat will also limit the colour gamut that it can reproduce.
Mimaki has adapted its TS330-1600 dye sublimation printer with new firmware to be able to run the inkset that the TraPis approach requires. Otherwise, itās a relatively standard 1.6m wide roll-to-roll printer for transfer papers.
The system uses a water-based pigment ink with an eight-color inkset that consists of CMYK plus red, green, blue and light black. As with most textile pigment inks, it will print to a wide range of different fabrics.
It does require a specific transfer paper with a coating designed to hold the TraPis ink. This transfer paper is made by Coldenhove but itās only available through the Mimaki dealer channel.
Once printed, the image is transferred from the paper to the textile via a calendar heat press. However, it will not work with the majority of calendars because it requires much higher pressure ā at least 8 bar ā whereas most calendars designed for dye sublimation can only manage 6 bar. This limits the choice to Klieverik and Monti Antonio, both of which can supply suitable units. As with dye sublimation, the heat within the press releases the ink from the paper but itās the high pressure that then forces the ink onto the fabric.
The key advantage to this system is that thereās no need to pretreat the fabric, and thereās no need for any washing or steaming, which eliminates the need for water as well as the time this would take. Judging from the samples shown at Fespa, the results seem quite good. Many printers will be familiar with the concept of printing to transfer paper, and this does offer a reasonably cost-effective approach, albeit thereās a limited choice of calendar units and transfer papers.
Itās also worth noting that Mimaki previewed another technology prototype last year with its NeoChromato process for recycling polyester prints that have previously been dye-sublimated, such as exhibition graphics. Iāve already written about this technology here, which will be shown at drupa.
Mimaki will also use its stand at drupa to highlight its work with the Indian Tiny Miracles foundation, which supports women working in local communities. For drupa, the group has produced environmentally friendly, Mimaki-branded cotton bags which are helping to replace plastic bags.

Mimaki showcases CJV330 eco-solvent printer
Mimaki exhibited the CJV330, which is one of the latest models in its eco-solvent printing series, at the Media Expo in Greater Noida. It also showcased three 100 series models ā the JV100, UJV100, and TS100 inkjet printers at the recent in-person Media Expo New Delhi 2022. The JV100 uses eco-solvent inks, the UJV100 uses UV cured inks and the TS100 is a dye-sublimation model using transfer papers.
Also displayed was the Mimaki UJF-6042MkIIe flatbed UV printer. Mimaki displayed a laser cutting system to show the combination of UV curing, printing, and laser cutting as a core set or combination of tools to cover multiple applications or end products. Kenichiro (Ken) Seki, managing director, Mimaki said, āThere are many, many laser cutter users in the market, but what the laser cannot do is to make color, which we can add color by using the UJF. This combination adds value to the laser cutting machine users.ā
Expanding the market by stretching in both directions
āThe market itself is of bigger volume in the lower-end segments. In the high-end section, customers require very high-speed printing. Mimaki usually caters to the middle segment, which is not so expensive and doesnāt require super high printing and image quality. Now we are going to target the high-end segment as well in India. We havenāt started yet but in Japan, we now have the JFX600, which is our high-end model for UV flatbed printing. Eventually, we want to introduce that kind of high-end machine in India so that we can target those higher-end customers and at the same time, use the 100 series machines to target the low-end customers as well. I am not thinking that we can take all those customers but we want to maybe stretch to reach those lower-end customers as well because they are dominated by Chinese or local Indian companies. We will have to expand our market volume so we have both the high-end and low-end customers,ā he added.

Mimaki had earlier launched the 3DUJ-553 color 3D printer, enabling the full-color modeling of over 10 million colors. About the printer, Seki said, āThe machine is already in the market but we havenāt started selling it in India yet. We have to be ready because 3D printing is a totally different mindset and technology. We have to learn a lot more and maybe hire someone, especially for this segment. We still donāt know about the market size of 3D printing. India itself is a big country, so eventually, we will start but we havenāt finalized when.ā
