Brief summary of the experiments

The Milgram Experiments were experiments were done to see how after people would go to bend to authority when told to do something. With it questioning if the person being told to do the action is responsible for their wrong doings. With these being based on the question whether or not we prosecute war criminals for acts they were told to do.

In the ogrinal experiments there were three roles of the original experiments

- The experimenter/researcher: the one who was in charge of the study

- The teacher/professor: the one who is being studied and the one who is delivering the electric shocks, if the learner gets it wrong

- the learner/student: the one "receiving" the electric shocks, if they get a question wrong but in reality is not actually being shocked but is in on the experiment

The experimenter tells the teacher that this experiment is about pushiment and memory and that the teacher would be reading to the learner. The experimenter would show the teacher the learner being locked to a chair in an isolated room which the room would be locked.

If the learner got an answer wrong the teacher was told by the experimenter to shock the learner by a 15 volts with each wrong answer increasing the volts by 15 volts up until 450 volts. However, there were no shocks given. The experimenter's would play prerecorded audio recordings of the learners in pain with each wrong answer causing a more drastic reaction to the shock. and the higher the voltage the more likely the teacher was to quit from the learns reaction to the shocks getting worse. The experimenter however would push the teacher to keep going with the experiment. However, if the teacher doesn't continue after 4 probs (basically just "you have to continue for the experiment") the experiment ends but if the teacher does continue between the probs the experiment will end after the volts reaches 450 volts.

How I think MILGRAM ties to the experiments

First off the roles of the experiment would be slightly different to what they were

- The MILGRAM prisons are the experimenter with the trials being the experiment

- We as the audience are the teacher

- The prisoners are the learners

Now let's get into the verdicts and how they tie into the experiments

- Innocent: no shock, their ideals/crime are seen as correct by the teacher

- Guilty: shock, their ideals/crime are seen as incorrect by the teacher

With that the I think the whole concept of MILGRAM project is unintentional an experiment on how we judge and how we react to the crimes and, in-prison dynamics and beliefs via the verdicts. With us as the teacher of the prisoners not realizing what we signed up for when judging the prisoners. Obviously this lacks a bit of nuance such as meta voters and the fandom growing bigger over time but like you know I don't even think the creators excepted the current outcome so it's fine-.

So basically the MILGRAM creators were like here take these prisoners judge them. We do as we are told by the MILGRAM creators. We as the audience realized "oh shit" after the first trial. and now we are here yeah ٩(๑❛ᴗ❛๑)۶.

EPISODE 9: SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY, SITUATIONISM, AND MORAL CHARACTER

After discussing some listener feedback about the movie Swingers, Tamler and David talk about two classic experiments in social psychology: the Milgram Experiments and the Zimbardo Prison experiment.  They discuss the power of the situation, its influence on recent philosophy, and whether there is room given the evidence to believe in moral character and virtue. Also, Tamler admits to his former struggles with hard core street drugs, and Dave ponders which prison gang would be most accepting if he had to serve hard time.

Hey All You Zombies!! Episode 16

We touch upon several movies this week, from the Oogieloves, now considered the "worst movie opening", Compliance and it's link to some behavioural experiments of the 60's, and Possession which was the surprise box office hit this past weekend. Plus we celebrate the return of Dr. Who and pick out our favourite Time Machines.

Note: This episode ends abruptly (thankfully at the very, very end). We received a "fatal server error" message from Google, so it wasn't anything on our end, but nothing is missing except our goodbyes.
