First published as a book in 1827, the eastern baroque-style historical drama was so well received that during the same year, it saw two more editions, and its writer; Jovan Sterija Popović decided to turn it into a playwright in 1834, marking his debut in drama. Â
Though first premiered at an inn, the drama was later performed in the writer’s private theater in Belgrade, Serbia in the 1840s.Â
The story focuses on Mileva; the sister of Knez Stefan and her lover Svetislav, as they face major difficulties and sorrows as her upcoming marriage to Sultan Bayezid approaches.Â
