Well, thanks to some weird unknown problem that happened, and to the unhelpfulness of Tumblr support, my original account (under the same name) got deleted and couldn’t be reactivated, so I’m re-writing and summarising the submissions I made for the first assessment.
Technology at its finest...
For the first milestone, I came across a few problems, mostly within the sequencer and rendering stages. I had animation and camera movement incorporated into sequencer in Unreal, but when I went to render the scene, there was no animation playing in the rendered product. I tried several times using a number of methods, such as trying to render each animated object separately, but nothing worked. Also, the cylinder I had animated suddenly became invisible, even when selected (apart from its vertices). Not sure why this happened either, but this kept happening when I added new cylinders to the level.
Before starting this unit, I had very little information of 3D software including Maya and Unreal, only using it for the first time last semester for Real-Time 3D Graphics. The information in Unreal was particularly limited, as I essentially only used Unreal last semester to import assets and to apply textures and materials. As a result, most of this week was spent watching tutorials to expand my knowledge of Unreal and Maya, such as this Lynda course: https://www.lynda.com/Unreal-Engine-tutorials/Unreal-Essential-Training/424941-2.html
To put my effort this week into numbers, I spent approximately 5-6 hours on tutorials, 3 hours into creating the milestone, and about 1 1/2 - 2 hours on reflection.
The above images are render passes of the scene that wouldn’t animate (ambient occlusion, final image and scene depth).
The final scene image is also all that could be seen in the rendered video (so no camera movement, no cylinder and its animation).
