You tap your fingertips on the table in front of you, each digit following the same rhythm every time. After a few more uneventful seconds pass, you turn your wrist to check the time. 9:30 p.m. Your husband was supposed to have met you at Mariano’s an hour ago. When the door to the restaurant opens, your gaze pops toward it. A nicely dressed couple enters, arm-in-arm. Nope, not your husband. With a deep sigh, you raise a hand to flag down your waiter.
“Check please,” you request dryly.
He nods curly and spins on his heel to go fetch your bill.
You can’t believe this is happening. On your wedding anniversary no less. Three years of being married and you would expect that your husband is capable of tearing himself away from work for one single night to celebrate the very thing that binds you together. Legally and forever. How could he do this to you?
When the waiter returns with your check, you’re surprised to find a bag full of gourmet chocolates on top of the check-holder.
“Oh, I didn’t order these!” you say quickly, hoping to catch him before he bounces away again.
“No, ma’am. They’re on the house,” he replies.
He throws you a sympathetic expression. Although you genuinely do appreciate the sentiment, your face heats up with shame. How much more pathetic could your night get? You sign the check as quickly as possible and lift the jacket from the back of your chair. You’ve never been happier to escape a public place so quickly.
You’re nothing short of devastated. This has not been the evening you were envisioning. By the time you get home from the restaurant, you’re so emotionally exhausted and disappointed that you decide to go straight to bed. Before climbing underneath the covers, you give Steve’s office one last call to make sure he’s still alive. Kate, Steve’s secretary answers and directs you to leave a message. Kate is an incredibly sweet woman. She apologizes on your husband’s behalf and ensures that he’ll make it up to you. You aren’t sure how he could at this point. But you thank her and leave a quick message anyway. Then, you pull on your pajamas, wash your face, and pull the covers up to your chin.
─────
“And that’s a wrap! Great work tonight, everybody!” Steve yells, clapping his hands together enthusiastically. “Drive safe and see you all Monday.”
As soon as the last word has left his lips, Steve is bounding up the stairs toward his office. He has to call his wife as soon as humanly possible. As he barrels through the waiting area, Kate, his secretary, calls out to him.
“Mr. Binder, your wife called. Again. She-”
“I know, I know,” Steve replies frantically. “Damn!”
He rushes into his office and immediately reaches for the phone. He’s in deep shit. He knows very well what day it is: his wedding anniversary. And where is he? Not at Mariano’s like he was supposed to be…he glances at the clock in the corner of his office and his eyes widen. 10:30?? How could it already be 10:30? He’s two hours late, even worse than he thought.
He’s been so busy recently with the Elvis Presley special coming up. The studio has been putting an unhealthy amount of pressure on him and the rest of the crew to be absolutely perfect. Steve didn’t mean to work late but he was just so stressed. He must have lost track of time. Before he has a chance to dial in the familiar number, he notices the answering machine blinking. He clicks it on and leans over the desk, tapping his finger neurotically as it plays back his messages.
“Steve, honey, where are you?” Y/N. “We have to leave soon or we’re gonna be late. Our reservation is at 8:30. Please don’t forget. Okay, I love you, bye.”
The answer machine beeps before playing the next message. The sweet sound of his wife’s voice fills the small office once again.
“Okay, well, I’m not sure what you’re doing or why you’re not calling me back, but I can’t wait any longer. I’m gonna drive myself over to the restaurant. Please, please leave soon so that you’re not late. 8:30 at Mariano’s, okay? Okay, love you.”
Steve sighs as the answering machine beeps one more time and the last message clicks on.
“Steve, don’t bother going over to the restaurant. I waited an hour and you never showed up, so I went home. I don’t know what could have caused you to miss our wedding anniversary, but…” her deep sigh sends a pang through Steve’s gut, “just drive safely on your way home.”
The machine clicks off without another word. Steve has clearly noticed the fact that his wife neglected to tell him she loved him in her last message. He couldn’t blame her. How could he have made such a stupid, foolish mistake? He runs his hand through his hair with a frustrated groan. He knows there’s no valid excuse for his behavior.
“If I were you,” Steve jumps at the sound of Kate’s voice from the doorway, “I would come up with something pretty damn romantic. And quickly. Y/N is a good catch; you don’t want to lose her. At the risk of being unprofessional, sir, this mistake is gonna be hard to come back from. You better do something extra special.”
“Like what, Kate? I have no idea what I could do that would possibly make it up to her now.”
“You’ll think of something,” Kate replies with a shrug. “You’re a good guy, Steve. Think about one of those classic movies the studio has produced. You’ve overseen some romantic projects. Use those as your inspiration.”
Steve shakes his head dismissively but, as his mind spins in circles, he realizes she’s completely right. A fantastic idea occurs to him and he snaps. A smile spreads across his face and he quickly yanks his coat off the corner of the desk.
“Kate, you’re the best! Thanks!” he shouts as he sprints out of his office.
He’s down the hall quicker than a flash. In order to make this work, he’ll have to pick up a few things first. A short trip to the store should solve that. He rushes to the closest grocery store and slides in just as the doors are closing. He normally wouldn’t have bothered, but he needs this to work. Badly. Once inside, he scans up and down the aisles, gathering everything he can possibly think of. In record time, he checks out and stuffs the bags into his old Chevy before pulling away toward home.
─────
The next thing you know, you’re being gently shaken awake. You blink into consciousness, confused and discombobulated. You rub your eyes in the darkness as they adjust. Before you have a chance to figure out who you’re looking at, a familiar voice answers your question.
“Y/N, darling? Wake up, baby. I have a surprise for you.”
Steve. You sigh and roll over, intent on going back to bed. Steve resumes his movement, shaking your shoulder again.
“Steve, what are you doing?” you ask, irritated. “I’m trying to sleep.”
“I know and I’m sorry to wake you, but I have a surprise for you.”
You sigh and roll over, propping yourself up on your elbows.
“I don’t want a surprise, Steve,” you quip, shaking your head. “That’s why I made reservations at Mariano’s a month ago.”
“I know that,” Steve replies with a sigh. “I know that and I know that I messed up royally this time. There’s absolutely no excuse for me missing our reservation. And I know you’re upset and you have every right to be. You should have the chance to tell me off. I really believe that. But…can I just show you what I’ve done, first?”
“Why? Is it a time traveling machine so we can go back and not miss our reservation at the restaurant?”
“Not exactly, but I think you might like it. And, for my own selfish reasons, I think it might soften your blow a little.”
“No,” you respond. “I’m furious with you right now. Honestly, Steve, I just want you to go away so I can at least get some rest.”
“Y/N,” Steve pleads, “I know I messed up but please let me try to fix it.”
You say nothing for a moment, considering his offer. He really doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt after his behavior, but you can’t deny that you’ve noticed how hard he’s been working. As thrilled as you were to hear that your husband was going to be producing a television special for the Elvis Presley, you’ve begun to hate that name. Steve has been under so much pressure from the higher-ups to get it right. Not to mention that Elvis’ manager, whose name you can never remember, sounds like a real pain in the ass to deal with. You know this has turned into something of a passion project for Steve. It’s your last wish on earth to take something like that away from him.
“Please,” Steve begs again, his voice snapping you back to reality.
Although you can’t see him properly in the darkness, you can clearly hear the desperation in his voice. You sigh loudly and nod your head.
“Fine. But if I don’t like what I see, then I’m going back to sleep without another word.”
“That’s completely fair,” he agrees, clearly energized by your willingness to indulge him.
He hops off the bed and holds his hand out for you. You slide your palm into his begrudgingly. His warm fingers close gently over yours and you smile into the darkness. His touch still manages to make your heart flutter. Steve leads you through the dark room, being careful not to steer you into anything. When you step into the hallway, you notice a soft glow coming from the living room. You can see it over the banister on the stairs. As you descend, your arm linked in your husband’s, your heart starts to flutter with excitement.
“Oh, Steve…” you mutter as you step onto the ground floor.
He’s set up a beautiful scene in your living room. All of the furniture has been pushed to the side. In the middle of the room, he’s positioned a small square table with two chairs. On top is a candle and two dishes, your finest China. The entire space is lit solely by firelight, the fireplace is crackling quietly and candles are strewn all around the room. Red rose petals are littered everywhere, on the floor, on top of the bookshelves, on the couch. Soft 50s romance tunes are spinning quietly on the record player in the corner. It’s a perfect sight.
You pull away from his arm to examine the table closer. A bottle of expensive-looking champagne is tucked neatly into an ice bucket. You can’t help but chuckle as you notice spaghetti and meatballs globbed onto the plates. Steve is a horrible cook. You’d discover that on your third date when he insisted he would make you a meal. He made chili and it was probably the most detestable thing you’ve ever put into your mouth. You have to admit that you’re not very excited to try the spaghetti. But the scene is absolutely breathtaking, nonetheless.
“How did I do?” Steve’s voice breaks through. “I know I should have been at the restaurant. Like I said upstairs, there’s no excuse for why I wasn’t. I’m an asshole. I know that. I’m a horrible husband and I wouldn’t be surprised if you wanted me to sleep outside tonight. But I did everything I could think of to try and make it up to you. I know it’s not Mariano’s but-”
“I guess it’ll have to do,” you interrupt him.
You’re lying through your teeth. It really is perfect, so beautiful and dreamy. He’s right; it’s not Mariano’s, but it’s damn close and more than enough for him to have made it up to you. You refuse to let him know that, though. You want him to sweat a little longer. It is your anniversary, after all.
“My lady,” Steve says, pulling out your chair.
You’re about to take a seat when you remember what you’re wearing.
“Oh, Steve, let me at least go and change first. I look ridiculous in my pajamas like this.”
“No, no need. Please don’t change. You look beautiful just like this.”
You don’t believe him for a second, but his eyes are so earnest and honest that you give in immediately. Besides, if you’re honest with yourself, you really don’t feel like changing back into normal clothes. You’re far more comfortable than you’ve ever been while seated at a romantic dinner like this. Although when Steve pushes your chair in, you can’t help but feel underdressed as you watch your husband, still in his work clothes, take a seat in his own chair. Steve fishes out the champagne and offers it to you.
“You better fill the glass, Binder,” you say, tight-lipped.
He gulps but follows your directions anyway, filling your glass up almost to the brim. You bite your lip to keep from laughing. You like seeing him nervous; you like watching him cater to your needs.
“I know I’m not much of a cook,” Steve says, reaching behind his head to itch the back of his neck nervously. “But I tried my absolute best with this one. I used one of your recipes from in there.”
Your eyes follow his gesture toward the kitchen. You’re afraid to look, anticipating a massive mess from his inept cooking ability. To your pleasure, however, you find the space squeaky clean. Not a dish or stain to be seen. You raise an eyebrow. He really is doing everything he can think of to fix his mistake.
“You cleaned up after yourself. I’m proud. That’s a big improvement from the last time you cooked for me.”
Steve laughs.
“The chili incident of 1961,” he nods. “Believe me, I remember. I don’t think you’ll ever let me forget about that.”
“No, I couldn’t. I think my stomach is still recovering from the acid reflux that meal induced. If this spaghetti inflicts that pain on me again...”
“I really hope it doesn’t,” Steve replies, leaning forward with his elbows on the table.
You take a forkful of spaghetti and twirl the noodles around your fork. You hesitate before lifting it to your lips, genuinely scared to taste it. Since you really want this evening to pan out, you take the plunge and shove the noodles inside. If this food is as bad as you remember, the night will be sufficiently ruined. As the flavors melt on your tongue, your eyebrows shoot up in shock.
“Oh my god…” you mumble.
“Oh hell. Is it really that bad?” Steve asks, cringing. His head drops to the side, disappointed.
“No…no it’s actually really delicious,” you say. “Like actually tasty, maybe even better then when I make it. What did you do to it?”
“Are you…is this a joke? I just followed the recipe, I think. It has some garlic in the sauce, maybe…I…I don’t know what I did.”
Your smile is too powerful to stop this time around. You giggle at how adorably humble and befuddled he is.
“This isn’t a joke, I swear," you say. "I don’t know what you did either, but I’m pleasantly surprised, Stevie. I really am. This is far, far superior to the chili incident of 1961. I can’t believe you actually cooked this. Wait, you did actually cook this yourself, right?”
“Yes, I swear I did. I’m so, so glad to hear that you like it,” he replies, beaming from across the table.
You lift your gaze. He looks absolutely precious, so incredibly happy that he could do something right for a change. You can see, written on his face, how pleased he is that he made something good. You love him all the more for it. You can feel him breaking down your angry walls. Your heart is beginning to swell with love. While you’re a little bummed that your hard-to-get game is up, you’re desperate to get back to normal. You both fall into quiet conversation as you munch on your meals. Once your plates are mostly empty, silence settles. You absentmindedly glance down at your pajamas and shake your head. You chuckle.
“What? What are you laughing at?” Steve asks.
“I just can’t believe I’m sitting here celebrating my wedding anniversary in PJs,” you reply. “I should be wearing a sexy red number with my hair curled and my eyelashes primped. I should be sitting in a fancy Italian restaurant, not in my living room.”
“You look stunning in your pajamas,” Steve answers without missing a beat.
“Stop it, you liar.”
“No, I’m serious. This is exactly how I want to remember you. Fresh-faced and comfortable. Free. This is the real you and this is the woman I wanted to marry, more than anything.”
You falter for a moment, his words touching your aching heart. Your gut flutters with butterflies, a sensation you haven't felt in a while. You drop your gaze as heat creeps into your cheeks and neck. You can’t help but notice how Steve’s dress shirt is clinging to his frame, half-unbuttoned. The sleeves are rolled up to his elbows, putting his toned forearms on full display. He looks like a sexy professor, teasing and mischievous. His handsome features are emphasized by the shadows in the room. His sweet lips are parted, looking unbearably delicious and soft. His sandy brown hair is messy and uncouth, just the way you like it. Your eyes drop onto his bare chest. You gulp as you realize that you’re finding yourself insanely attracted to your own husband.
“I know you deserved better than this tonight,” Steve continued. “You deserve everything the world has to offer, the best of whatever you want. You deserve everything. I should have been there to give it to you, but I wasn’t. I haven’t been and I’m sorry. I’m so incredibly sorry. I can’t even explain it using the human language.”
You wait a beat before responding, debating what exactly you want to say.
“I do deserve that,” you concede. “And you haven’t been here. It’s been bothering me for a while.”
“I know. I’m such an asshole…I’m sorry, I-”
“I understand why you’ve been so distant lately, Steve,” you interrupt. You weren’t finished. “I promise I do. I know how much pressure you’re under. And I know that this project is special to you. I can tell by the way you talk about it that it means everything to you. Don’t diminish yourself. You deserve everything, too. And if this special is what makes you happy right now, then I want you to do it and enjoy it and be proud of it.”
“It doesn’t mean more than you. Besides, how can you even say that? I didn’t even bother to show up to our own wedding anniversary, a celebration of the most important day in our lives, and you’re as supportive as ever. I don’t deserve you, I really don’t.
You smile softly and reach across the table. You rest your palm on top of his hand, your thumb reassuringly rubbing circles on his skin.
“Because I love you, Steve. Because when I married you, I agreed to stand by you for better or for worse. And if this is as bad as the worse gets, then I have nothing to complain about. I just…want us to get a little more better back in our lives. I miss you. You should have been there tonight and you weren’t. But you can be here for me now.”
Steve nods resolutely, his eyes staring straight back into yours. His other hand clamps over your intertwined fingers. He holds your grasp tightly and gazes at you, the soft candlelight glowing on his face.
“I got you something,” he says.
“What? Why did you do that?”
“Because when I married you, I agreed to support you for richer or for poorer. Fortunately, right now, we’re richer," he offers a goofy smile and you giggle. "I want you surrounded by things that remind you of me. Plus, this one is special. I’ve had it in the works for a long time.”
“How long?”
“Since we met.”
“Really?” you ask, unconvinced. “That long?”
“Well, maybe not until our second date,” he stands up and grabs a small silver bag from the kitchen countertop. He drops it before you on the dining table. “That was when I decided I wanted to marry you. I didn’t know if you wanted me that way yet, but I was going to do everything I could to persuade you.”
You smile and glance up at him. He returns your happy expression and points toward the bag, encouraging you to open your surprise. You turn to the gift and carefully untie the strands holding the top together. It opens to reveal some wrapping tissue which you set on the table beside you. You finally fish out a small red velvet jewelry box. Tilting your head affectionately, you open it and pull out a small heart-shaped charm.
“What is this, Stevie?”
“Open it.”
“I did…I…what do you mean?”
“Open it,” he repeats, pointing at the necklace.
Your fingertip grazes along the side of the heart and your eyebrows raise as you feel a tiny mechanism. You click it open and the necklace unfolds.
“Oh, Steve…” you muse. It’s a locket, of course.
Your breath fades from your lungs as you examine what’s pasted securely inside. It’s the very first photograph that you and Steve ever took together. It’s a horrible picture, blurry and wildly outdated. But it’s the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen. You run your fingertip over the picture and bite your lip to contain your happiness.
“Do you like it? That’s the first picture we took together.”
“I know what it is,” you reply with a giggle. “It’s absolutely perfect, Steve. Just perfect. Thank you, darling. Here, help me?”
You hand the necklace off to him and readjust so he can fasten it around your neck. His fingers gently graze across your skin and you close your eyes in pleasure at his ghostly touch. Once fastened, his hands rest on your shoulders, his thumbs massaging the muscles by your neck. You grab the locket and peer at it from above, smoothing your fingertip over the precious thing charm more time.
“I love you, Y/N,” Steve says, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of your head.
“I love you too, Steve. So much.”
He steps to your side, leaning on the table with his elbow. You gaze over at him, letting your eyes drop down to his lips. You can tell he knows what you want. You’re not being very subtle about it at all, but why should you? It’s your wedding anniversary. He slowly leans down and you raise your head up to meet him. Your lips touch gently at first, the way they have a thousand times before. This kiss feels different, though. You are so enraptured by your husband that time feels like it stops just for you. You linger on each other’s lips for what feels like ages before separating. You keep your forehead pressed against Steve’s and hum contentedly. This anniversary has turned out alright, after all. You’re incandescently happy but you can’t help the yawn that forces itself out of your mouth.
“Oh my,” you say. “I’m so exhausted. Let’s get in bed. I want to fall asleep in your arms.”
“Not yet.”
“Not yet?” you repeat incredulously, tilting your head.
“I’m not finished with you yet.”
“Excuse me…” you reply coquettishly.
You yelp as Steve whirls the chair around so that you’re facing him straight-on. He drops onto his knees, his palms wrapping around your thighs. He gently slides his hands up your skin, pushing the fabric of your pajamas away as he does so. You giggle when he raises his lips toward your cheek. He presses a chaste kiss there then trails his mouth down your neck. Your eyes close as he nips at your shoulder and the sensitive skin below your jaw. He’s so close that you can smell his intoxicating cologne, spicy and sweet. Your favorite. It draws you even further into him. A familiar sensation builds in your lower stomach. Steve pauses by your ear, his hot breath tickling your skin.
“I have one last surprise up my sleeve,” he whispers.
You snort. You can’t not make this joke.
“Don’t you mean down your pants?”
You gesture toward your husband’s crotch, an area you know quite well by now if you’re honest. Steve pulls back and just shakes his head with a smirk.
“Nope. I have everything I need right here.”
Steve wiggles his long, slender fingers and then drags his pointer finger across the tip of his tongue. Your heart pounds in your chest and your mouth pops open in surprise.
“Steven!” you scold him playfully, although the smirk that spreads across your features gives you away. “Maybe you should miss dinner more often if this is the treatment I get afterward.”
“Dessert is served.”
“Ooh, my favorite. No complaints from me.”
“Oh, I wouldn't be too hasty. You have no idea what I’m gonna do to you tonight.”
His head leans to the side, begging you to come closer. Your toes curl in excitement as you give in, touching your lips to his. His hands travel further up your thighs, sneaking across the inside of your legs. His grip only tightens as he kisses you deeper and deeper. The force from his kiss makes you breathless. You can tell that you’re in for a long night. He did owe you, after all. And you desperately look forward to each and every way he’s planning to repay you.

You stuff your last folder into your tote bag and string the bag over your shoulder. After the long day you’ve had, you’re more than happy to head home for the night. You flick off the light in your office and start down the hall. The heels of your shoes click, echoing with each step. You suddenly think you hear a sound and pause in the hall. Listening closely, you definitely hear someone still here.
You walk quietly toward the sound, albeit away from your exit. As the noise grows louder, you realize that it’s coming from the control room. You stop outside the door and peek your head around the corner. You’re shocked to find none other than Steve Binder, one of the studio’s producers. He also just happens to be the man on whom you have the world’s biggest crush.
You met Steve when you started work at NBC studios in Burbank and have basically had a crush on the man since you first saw him. He’s absolutely gorgeous with striking clear blue eyes and soft sandy hair. He has the most perfectly sculpted face you’ve ever seen. You want nothing more than to kiss his pink plump lips every time you see him.
But you could never do something so bold. Besides, he barely even knows that you exist. You’ve worked closely here and there, passed each other in the hallway. He knows your name and your face. But you only work in the costume department, which means you rarely have any reason to be near him. The office isn’t that large, so you’ve shared passing comments about the weather or lunch or other usual small talk topics. But you’ve never had an actual conversation about something real. You could never be with him. He’s out of your league.
You wait a few minutes, observing him in the control room. He’s on his hands and knees, bent over at the waist with his arms shoved elbows deep into some machine. He’s grumbling and spitting quiet profanities to himself. You know it’s ridiculous to find him attractive at this current moment, but you do. You really do. As you stand, watching him in the eerie silence of the building, you realize that this is the first time you’ve ever been alone together. Just the two of you.
This is your chance, maybe the only chance you’ll get. With a deep sigh, Steve grumbles angrily. Stifling a giggle, you clear your throat and step out into the open.
“Goodnight Mr. Binder,” you say, just loud enough for him to hear.
His head snaps up and you wince as a loud bang accompanies his head hitting the table. He glances over his shoulder with one eye closed in pain. He reaches up to rub the back of his head with his fingers. You hold a hand up to your mouth in embarrassment, glad that the low lighting is hiding you from his sight.
“Oh….Y/N, hi. I didn’t hear you come in,” he says, his hand still massaging the back of his head.
“I’m so sorry, Mr. Binder, I didn’t mean to startle you,” you say, shaking your head.
“No, no that’s okay,” he replies with a soft chuckle.
A semi-awkward silence settles between you as you both wait for the other to continue the conversation. Your heart starts to pound in your chest as you realize that you should say something to fill the void.
“Working late?”
“Attempting to. I guess that’s why you startled me. I was a little too involved in this…mess.”
“Oh?” you say, pretending like you hadn’t noticed. “What exactly are you attempting to do, Mr. Binder?”
“Oh, just trying to fix this stupid sound machine,” he responds, laughing nervously.
“Maybe I can help.”
You mentally scold yourself as you start walking forward. You know damn well that you haven't the slightest idea what the hell you're even looking at. But the opportunity to spend time alone with Steve is too good to turn down.
So you walk anyway, all the way into the room where you crouch down next to him. Clearing your throat, you tuck a piece of hair behind your ear and stick your head into the space. Steve waddles back to make some room. You can’t help but realize just how close you are to one another. You go to put your hand on the ground, but accidentally place it directly on top of Steve’s. With a gasp, you pull it away quickly.
“Sorry…” you both mumble at the same time.
You lean forward and reach into the machine to tug on different wires. With a nervous chuckle, you parse through red, green, and blue wires which are all tangled together. You raise your eyebrows as your gaze flicks around the machine confusedly. You laugh anxiously and pull back.
“Do you happen to know what’s wrong with it?” you ask sheepishly.
You try to ignore the heat that creeps up into your cheeks and tips of your ears. Steve glances over at you and grins. You can’t help but share the expression at the beautiful sigh of his handsome features curving up into joy. His eyes sparkle, even in the low lighting of the room.
“Nope. Not a damn clue. It looks like maybe something came unplugged but I can’t tell. I think this…”
Steve leans forward as he talks, grabbing one of the red wires with his fingertips. To get a better view of it, you follow his lead and press your head right next to his. You’re extra careful not to allow your faces to touch, though. You watch his fingers as he tries to explain his thought process, although not a single word is getting through.
You’re far too distracted by the warmth you can feel radiating off his skin, by the sweet smell of his cologne, by the way his arm just gently brushes against yours when he shifts his weight, the soothing sound of his voice. Everything about him is intoxicating and you can barely keep control of yourself.
“...but who knows. I’m not an electrician,” he finishes with a shrug.
“I see what you’re saying,” you agree. “Maybe if we just…”
You take the cord from him, your fingers brushing. You both pause immediately, the cord dropping as you separate your fingers as quickly as possible. You giggle nervously and Steve clears his throat. You pick the cord back up and plug it into one of many open sockets in the back.
“And then if we just-”
Steve must have had the exact idea as you, because you both move your heads to the side to raise them up from under the table at the same time. Your foreheads knock against each other and you both immediately fill the room with a chorus of ouches. Wincing and rubbing your head, you carefully sit back onto your bum and open an eye to glance at Steve. He’s in the same position as you, his bottom lip tugged between his teeth from the pain of your collision. When he opens his eyes, they land squarely on yours. Horror crosses his face in a matter of seconds.
“Oh, Y/N, are you alright? I am so sorry. I didn’t…that was a total accident. My fault completely, I-”
You can’t help it, you just start to chuckle. After a few seconds, a smile spreads across Steve’s face and he starts to laugh along with you. The gentle sniggering quickly turns into deep wheezing. The next thing you know, you’re both clutching at your stomachs, unable to breathe.
“Oh no, I’m sorry, Mr. Binder. I can’t believe I’ve wounded you twice in one night,” you choke out through laughs.
“It’s my fault for being so clumsy,” he says, shaking his head. “And, you don’t have to call me that, you know.”
“What do you mean?”
“Mr. Binder. You don’t have to address me so formally. I think we’ve worked together long enough for you to call me Steve. As a matter of fact, I’d like you to call me Steve.”
You lift your eyes to his to find a soft smile resting on his features, his eyes glinting. He stares so sweetly at you that your stomach erupts into fits of butterflies. You avert your eyes and giggle in whispers.
“So, should we see if our pain paid off?” he asks, grunting as he pushes himself to a stand.
He turns toward the switchboard and clicks on the machine. Surprisingly, a familiar slow song starts to play. You shoot him a pleased expression as he claps excitedly.
“Alright! There we go, problem solved, amazingly.”
As the music continues to play, you suddenly realize what you’re listening to: Elvis’ famous song “Can't Help Falling in Love with You.” You smile to yourself.
“Oh, don’t you just love this song.”
“I do.”
You lift your gaze back up to his to find his hand outstretched toward you. You nervously slide your fingers into his. To your surprise, your palm fits perfectly. When his fingers curl over your grasp, your heart skips about a thousand beats. He helps you to a stand and your dumb ass somehow manages to trip back over your own feet.
He immediately places his hand on your back to steady you, holding you upright so you don’t fall flat on your face. Embarrassed as hell, you sheepishly giggle again and apologize. You put your feet flat on the ground, but Steve doesn’t release you as you expect. Instead, he holds tightly onto your body, his free hand carefully sliding onto your back to join the other. Your breath hitches in your throat as he holds your body against him. He smiles softly.
“You know, I have to confess that…I’ve been imagining this moment since the first time I saw you."
“What?” you ask with wide eyes. “Are you making fun of me?”
“No, not at all. I’m being totally serious. Why would you think that?’
“There’s no way someone like you could ever be interested in me. I’m…I’m nobody. You’re…”
“Also nobody,” he replies with a chuckle.
“No! No, you’re everything. You’re so much more than I could ever be. You’re out of my league, Mr. Binder, I-”
“Shh,” his whisper interrupts your words. “How could you ever say that? You’re the most beautiful person I’ve ever laid eyes on. If one of us is in another league, it’s you. You’re…you’re out of this world, Y/N.”
“Mr. Binder, I…I don’t know what to say, I…”
“Then don’t say anything. Because I can think of a far better way to use your lips.”
Your eyes widen but not for long as he leans forward, pressing his mouth sweetly to yours. You melt under his grasp, your arms winding around his neck to pull him closer. His lips are warm and soft, fitting perfectly between yours. His grip on your waist tightens, pulling you further into his body. You don’t want him to leave, so when he acts as though he’s going to pull back, you yank him against your chest, smiling into the kiss. When you start to run out of breath, you finally release him. Your lips separate, although you keep your foreheads pressed together tightly, both heaving for breath.
“Oh, Steve,” you whisper between breaths.
He nudges his nose against yours and you crinkle your face with a smile. You pull back to look at him, but notice his expression deep in thought instead. Tilting your head, you gently shake him.
“What?”
“I was just thinking maybe I should work late more often.”
“Perhaps I’ll join you, if you’ll have me?”
“I’d be glad to take you, anytime,” he replies with a smirk.

“God this stupid mask is so annoying,” you say, readjusting the damn thing for what feels like the four-hundreth time that night. “Remind me why we have to wear this tonight?”
“Because,” your best friend responds, stepping behind you to help your tangled fingers out of the knotted ribbon, “it's a masquerade ball. That’s the whole point of a masquerade.”
“That everyone’s uncomfortable?”
“That everyone’s wearing masks,” your friend responds, bonking you gently on the head with an open palm. “It’s a tradition that dates all the way back to the fifteenth century. They’re also pretty spooky and perfect for Halloween. Plus, it’s Dottie’s birthday and you know how particular she is about everything.”
“Ugh, Dottie. I forgot about her,” you say, referring to a girl you’d gone to school with since kindergarten.
Dottie is…spoiled, for lack of a better word. She rarely doesn’t get exactly what she wants when she wants it and, apparently, this masquerade party is no different. Not that you really mind. The thought of attending the party is actually sort of exciting. After all, how many times in one’s life does a person get to go to a real masquerade ball?
You can hardly believe you’re even doing it for real as you stare into the floor-length mirror in your friend’s closet. You can’t help but laugh out loud at how silly you look, standing in a pile of jeans and sweaters wearing a deep red ballgown with black lace and flared sleeves. You figured most guests would dress as princesses or queens, so you decided to do something different. The second you laid eyes on a deep red and gold painted mask with horns, you knew you’d found the perfect costume.
“Are you almost ready? I’d like to get it over with as fast as possible,” you say, tucking a rogue strand of hair back into the hairstyle your best friend has helped construct for you.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m coming,” she replies, shrugging on a jacket and grabbing her keys from the dresser. “Got everything you need?”
“Unfortunately, yes. Hey if we arrive early, we can also leave early!” you say excitedly, tugging on her sleeve as you turn to exit her apartment.
She laughs but you know there’s little to no chance of her agreeing with you. Nope, you’d be stuck at this party for the next three hours. Three hours of your life that you’ll never get back.
The ride to Dottie’s mansion passes in the blink of an eye and the next thing you know, you’re climbing out of the car and walking down a faux red carpet that Dottie had laid out on the driveway leading up to the massive wooden front door.
“Are you joking?” you ask, rolling your eyes as your best friend laughs.
It feels like years by the time you reach the door but as soon as you enter the house, there’s a pair of butlers standing at the ready to take your coats and accessories. You feel heat creeping into your face, embarrassment settling as you realize how ridiculous everything seems. The butlers show you into the living room which will serve as the main ballroom for the evening’s festivities, according to the invitation, which was also unnecessarily fancy.
As you pass under the doorway, your eyes widen and your mouth drops open. It’s absolutely beautiful. The entire space has been totally transformed into something that resembles a mix between a 19th-century ballroom and a 60s club. You don’t know how to explain it other than that it sort of feels like a speakeasy, with mahogany floors and velvet red drapes hanging on the big rounded windows. There are several tables set up to the side of the main dance floor, many of the seats already filled and tables littered with half-eaten plates of charcuterie snacks and half-empty wine glasses.
You also spot a bar in the back left corner where a large group of guests is waiting for their drinks to be mixed and served. The lights are dimmed to give the room a surprisingly dark, spooky feeling, perfectly suited to the Halloween season. Candles, whether they're real or fake you can’t tell, glimmer around the room on the walls and tables. To bring the entire scene into the current era, Elvis Presley’s ‘You’re the Devil in Disguise' is currently booming around the room through the loudspeakers that have been placed everywhere. It’s amazing, but everywhere you look, all you can see is a fat stack of dollar signs.
Waiters dressed in black suits are circling around the room with silver trays of small snack food and glasses of champagne and punch. As one passes, you deftly swipe a glass of punch from the tray. He moves through your action as though you never even touched him. You glance at your best friend and shrug.
“This is icnredible,” she says and you nod.
“Yeah, I have to admit that Dottie’s really outdone herself this time. I shudder to imagine how much her parents spent on this little party of hers,” you respond, a little shiver accompanying your words. “So what does one even do at a party like this?”
“I guess the same thing you do at any other party. Find your friends and get dancing?”
You both shrug at each other and wade into the crowd standing on the sidelines of the dance floor, which is already overcrowded with couples and friends turning in dizzying circles of flashing color. It only takes a few minutes of awkward wandering before your friend, the utmost of social butterflies, finds a familiar face for you to talk to and drags you over to do introductions. You chat for a few minutes with the woman who stands before you dressed as some kind of princess.
When the song changes, the princess latches onto your friend and suggests they hit the dance floor. Your friend looks to you for permission which you gladly give.
“Have fun, you two!” you shout as they waltz away onto the floor.
While you wait on the sidelines, watching your best friend swirl around the dance floor, you absentmindedly swish your punch in its fancy stemmed glass. Your eyes lazily drag across the ballroom, evaluating the people dancing around in circles with their various partners and costumes. As you observe the scene, your gaze freezes on one man. He’s dressed as a prince. Prince Charming, perhaps? It somehow feels ironic, considering you're dressed as Satan's spawn.
He’s tall and nicely built with quite an impressively intricate costume. It’s comprised of perfectly fitted creamy-white breeches, dark navy socks, and a matching navy jacket with golden buttons and braided details spread across the fabric. You can’t quite see his face, just his jet-black hair which hangs longer in the back and is brushed off his forehead. Long, thick sideburns almost blend seamlessly into the black mask that covers the top half of his face.
Before you can catch up with yourself, he’s met your gaze and realized that you’re staring at him. You jerk yourself away, gulping down the shame and taking a large sip of the punch. When you dare another peek at the man, you look over to the place you last saw him and find the space empty. You do a quick double take and then sweep the area, searching for where he ran off to. With so many people crammed into the space, it’s like a search-and-find book. And you can’t find shit in this place.
Your friend’s laugh fills your ears as she clumsily makes her way back over to you, half-turned to wave goodbye to her friend. When she meets your eyes, she’s smiling happily.
“How was it? She seems nice.”
“Oh, she’s…lovely. So very lovely,” your friend responds and you think you can detect the smallest blush on her cheeks.
You’ve known for a while that your bestie is attracted to women, although you would never say anything until she’s prepared to tell you herself. It doesn’t matter one bit to you. At the moment, you’re just glad to have her back beside you.
“So, what do we do-”
“Scuse me, Miss.”
You turn at the sound of a man’s voice behind you. Your breath catches in your throat as you immediately recognize him; the man who caught you ogling at him from across the ballroom. His hand is outstretched toward you, palm up and waiting expectantly for you to take it.
“Can I have the next dance, darlin?” he asks. His voice is deep and raspy with a country twang that’s unmistakable.
“Uh…” you stutter dumbly, totally caught off-guard by his charming proposal. “Y-yes, of course. I’d be honored.”
You offer a small, nervous smile as you place your fingers gently into his. His long fingers curl around yours and he pulls you onto the dance floor. The music immediately changes, as if it was waiting for you both to step onto the floor. He swings you into his arms, one curled around your lower back, his fingers outstretched over the fabric, and the other holding your fingers firmly in his own.
“We met before, love?”
You find yourself unintentionally smiling underneath the mask as he spins you around. When you return face to face, you shake your head as elegantly as you can muster.
“No, sir. I don’t believe we have,” you reply and he spins you around again.
“You seem,” he pulls your body back into his and your chin raises instinctually. He runs his hand up the silk of your costume, tickling the skin of your back that the fabric doesn’t cover. “so familiar to me.”
“I can’t imagine why,” you respond as another spin comes. “Maybe we’ve met in a dream.”
“A nightmare’d be more like it,” he responds and your heart thuds against your chest.
“What?” you ask, both embarrassment and fear seizing you.
“Considerin ya costume, honey,” he clarifies and the pain of panic melts away from you.
“Oh,” you nod and laugh awkwardly.
His hand dances across the bare skin of your back, his warm palm pressed flat against the skin as he pulls your body into his own. You gaze up at him, your eyes trying desperately to somehow pry off the black mask that covers his face so expertly. His eyes sparkle mischievously through the two eyeholes, impossibly blue even in the dim lighting of the ballroom. Your eye traces down the curves and minutiae of his face, taking in the way his cheekbones cut sharply across his face, the way his straight and thin nose curves at the tip, the way his angular chin slices around his face, the way his plump red lips rest so comfortably against each other.
Before you have a chance to take in any more, he’s spinning you again. This time, you pause at arm's length from each other, your fingers holding on just by the fingertips. But, somehow, your grip on one another is strong, unbreakable. He pulls you back to him again and you resume your gaze for the quick moment which he dares to hold it.
“Maybe. But some things’re too good, even for dreams,” he responds, the corner of his mouth twitching up into the semblance of a smile. You laugh.
“I assure you, sir. I’m not one of those things.”
“Oh I beg to differ, honey.”
Again, he spins you out and holds you at arm's length.
“But if we don’t know each other,” he stops dancing abruptly, jerking you to a stop, also. You glance from side to side to see the other couples on the dance floor continuing to sway in circles and dance to the music. But you and he are stopped, paused in time, in the middle of the dancefloor. His hands are wrapped around yours, holding your fingers tightly in his own. You stare up at this mysterious man.
“I sure would like to,” he finishes, raising a hand to your cheek.
As soon as he touches you, you find yourself leaning into that feeling, craving more. Your eyes flutter closed against your will and you breathe him in, the faint smell of cigarette smoke and cologne tickling your nose. His thumb brushes against your collarbone and barely shifts the mask. Your eyes blink open with an idea.
You gently move your palms to cup both sides of his face. You stare up at him, tilting your head as you try to get a better look at him. He looks familiar, like you’ve seen him somewhere before. It’s on the tip of your tongue, but you can’t for the life of you figure out where. Your fingers gently crawl toward the mask and curl under the edge, starting to slowly lift it from his face.
He jerks away from your touch, evidently startled by the situation. You have nothing to hide under your mask but now you’re wondering if he does. Something about this mystery is too good to be true. It all feels like an illusion, one that you’re desperate to sustain for as long as possible. You stare up again into his eyes, your heart pounding in your chest for a reason unknown to you. His fingers suddenly latch onto your wrist and he starts pulling you away from the dance floor.
“Come with me,” he says gruffly.
Before you have a chance to question him, you’re weaving through crowds of people and dancing couples dressed in a wide variety of costumes and masks, all of their identities obscured. It’s like wading through a crowd of strangers, of faces in a dream, some familiar but somehow unplaceable. It’s suffocating, so much so that you physically breathe a sigh of relief when you burst through the double french doors onto the balcony. The doors slowly close behind you and take with them the loud murmur of the crowd inside.
“We can get some privacy out here,” the man mutters over his shoulder.
The fresh air is brisk and there’s a steady wind. You move to release his hand, but his fingers just clutch down harder onto yours. Your breath catches in your throat for yet another time tonight and you turn to face him, leaning against the banister at the edge of the balcony. A few moments of silence pass as you try to figure out what to say. The awkward quiet is suddenly broken by the mysterious man’s laugh. A healthy, hearty laugh sounds from deep in his throat. You quirk an eyebrow at him, unable to resist the urge to smile.
“Did I miss something?” you ask with a quiet chuckle.
“Nah, honey, I just thought of somethin funny, that’s all.”
You take a step closer to him, the privacy inspiring a new boldness within you.
“Oh please, sir, pray tell,” you say in your deepest, most seductive voice.
He glances over at you with a smirk resting on his mouth. Your eyes drop down to his plump red lips and you take a quick moment to appreciate them before he responds.
“I’s just thinkin bout how you’re the devil in disguise,” he says, another snicker rising from his throat.
Your eyebrows furrow for a moment as you try to understand what the hell he’s talking about. Glancing down at your dress it suddenly hits you.
“Oh…like the Elvis song? Yeah, I guess I am,” you agree with a chuckle. A few moments of silence pass. “So…are you gonna tell me why you dragged me out here? Or am I just supposed to read your mind?”
He laughs again before turning to face you, leaning his elbow on the top of the balcony banister. His eyes quickly track up and down your figure, lingering on your lips for a moment long enough to make your heart flutter.
“I told ya already,” he says. “I wanna get to know ya better.”
“Alright. Ask me something, then. Rapid fire. You go, then I go.”
He runs his tongue over his teeth while he thinks of his first question.
“How d’ya know Dottie?”
“We went to school together for a long, long time. How do you know her?”
“We used to date. A long, long time ago.”
“Wow…I’m sorry,” you respond. You try to hold in a laugh but it comes spluttering out anyway. He laughs along with you. “Your turn.”
“Aright. What’s your name, darlin?”
“Y/N. What’s yours?”
“Damn, honey, you gonna keep stealin my questions? I can’t tell ya my name.”
“Maybe. And why not?”
“It’s…complicated.”
“Okay,” you reply, narrowing your eyes. “That’s cryptic. Um…what’s your costume?”
“Ain’t it obvious? Prince Charming. My turn. You gotta fella?”
“A fella? As in a boyfriend? No,” you reply. “Why’d you cringe when I tried to take your mask off?”
He does a double-take, raising his eyebrows.
“Damn. Noticed that didja?” he asks and sighs.
“Yep. That doesn’t count as your question. But I’d like you to answer mine.”
He clears his throat and glances around
“Cause I don’t want nobody to know who I am.”
“Why?”
“Uh-uh, mama, it’s my question.”
You huff but let him ask anyway.
“You live round here?”
“Yep, about twenty minutes down the road. Now, why don’t you want anyone to know who you are?”
“It’s complicated, baby. It’d take me all night to explain.”
“I got time.”
“Goddamn, you’re persistent.”
“I just wanna know. You seem familiar to me, too. I’m just wondering if we’ve met before, that’s all.”
He shakes his head and then blows a puff of air onto his forehead, shifting the curled lock of hair that rests there.
“Alright, fine, fine, fine. I’ll tell ya, but you cannot tell a single other soul here, y’understand?” he says firmly.
You still can’t see his face but something about his tone and the sincerity in his eyes makes you immediately nod. He sighs one more time before leaning in closer to you.
“This may be hard to believe but…I’m Elvis.”
“Elvis?” you repeat slowly with a quirked eyebrow. “Elvis…Presley?”
He nods. You tilt your head to examine him more closely. As soon as you gaze back into his eyes your mouth pops open and you nod.
“Holy shit…you really are, aren’t you? I knew I knew you from somewhere. Wow…you know you could have lied. You could have told me any old name and I’d have believed you,” you whisper.
“I…”
You know you must look incredibly smug right now. By his reaction, you can tell that he hadn’t even thought about it. Integrity. You like that.
“You know I’ve had a major crush on you since I was little. I bought your first record when I was in high school. I have almost all of them now.”
“Really? Well, I know this ain’t the same but if it makes any difference, I’ve had a crush on you since I saw ya walk through that door tonight,” he says, tilting his head.
His eyes drop down to your lips and you couldn’t miss him biting his lip if you tried. The hint of a smile tugs at the corners of your mouth but you resist the expression. Instead, you step even closer to him, draping your hand over his on the balcony wall. His warm scent fills your nostrils again as you stare up at him with your best doe eyes.
“I’d like to see your face if you don’t mind.”
“I’d like to see yours, too.”
“On three,” you agree, raising your fingers to the edges of his mask. He follows suit, his large slender fingers attaching themselves to the ribbon at the back of your head.
“One,” you start.
“Two.”
“Three.”
On cue, you both slide each other’s masks up and over your heads. Your eyes immediately fall to his, taking in his features which were hidden by the mask before, familiar features. His eyebrows curve gently over his eyes, framing them handsomely. You can also see the full form of his nose, slender and straight all the way down to the tip. As your eyes bounce back and forth on his, you can tell that his eyes are doing the same to your exposed face. When you finally meet his gaze, he’s smiling sweetly down at you.
“Goddamn…the most beautiful woman I ever seen,” he says quietly. “The devil in disguise is really an angel underneath, ain’t she?”
You just giggle, curling your fingers around his. He tilts his head and his eyes drop quickly down to your lips again. You sneak a little peek yourself. His free hand moves up toward your face. He gently cups your face and strokes his thumb over the hollow skin of your cheek. With a raise of your tip-toes, you press your lips against his. At first, softly and then hungrily. As your lips move together, he intertwines his fingers into yours and shifts his grip onto the back of your head and neck, pulling your mouth harshly against his own.
Your fingers find their way onto his shoulders, gripping at the velvety fabric of his costume and adhering his body to yours. Elvis turns his face to the side to kiss you deeper, tracing your bottom lip with his tongue. You giggle into the kiss but open your lips for him. His hot, wet tongue swipes along yours and you hum quietly in satisfaction. Your stomach begins to turn uneasily and your heart beats frantically in your chest. When you feel your lungs begin to run out of air, you push gently against his chest to separate yourself from him. You pull apart, both panting for breath, but your foreheads remain pressed against each other. Silence falls between you as you try to catch your breath.
“You got one more question if you wanna use it,” you whisper against his lips. “I asked the last one.”
He doesn’t miss a single beat before responding.
“Whatcha doin later?”
You chuckle breathily and lift your gaze to stare up into his sparkling blue eyes. You smirk.
“Not a damn thing.”
“You wanna get a hot dog or somethin? I’m starvin. You hungry?”
“Famished.”

“Scotty, please stop! I can barely breathe!” you shout through fits of laughter.
You’re hanging out at a Halloween party with your boyfriend and his bandmates and closest friends. You and Elvis are two of the only people in attendance not wearing costumes, but Elvis had shot down every costume that you suggested throughout the entire month of October. Instead, you’ve come in a warm velvet dress in your favorite fall color.
Speaking of your boyfriend, it’s been a while since you last saw Elvis and you aren’t totally sure where he is at the current moment. You’ve been swept up into a conversation with his guitar player, Scotty Moore, who is currently telling you the most hilarious story you’ve ever heard.
“No, I swear. It all really happened,” Scotty insists.
You clutch onto your stomach as the last few laughs are squeezed out of your stomach and drape your hand on top of Scotty’s in a friendly gesture. You smile as you look at him, admiring his handsome face, glimmering eyes, and sweet smile.
“Well, then what happened afterward?”
“So then the motel manager comes runnin over with a broomstick in his hand and-”
“Scuse me but I need Y/N.”
You turn at the sound of your boyfriend’s deep southern drawl and your smile fades almost immediately at the sight of his stern expression. You shoot a sympathetic look toward Scotty and then place your fingers into Elvis’ outstretched palm. His hand clamps harshly around yours and he pulls you up and out of your chair.
Before you even have the chance to protest, he’s already dragging you up the stairs toward the hallway overlooking the entryway of Graceland. Once you reach the top of the stairs, you attempt to pull your hand away from Elvis. Your fingers slip through his grasp for just a moment before his fingers curl around the bones of your wrist.
You yank against him, pulling Elvis to a stop right outside the door of your bedroom. His grip tightens on your wrist and you wince at the sudden ache.
“What the hell, Elvis?” you hiss as he turns to face you.
“What d’ya think you’re doin? Talkin to him like that?”
“What? What are you talking about?”
You attempt to pull your hand away again but to no avail. You wince again as you notice how hard he’s gripping the bones under your skin.
“Ya think I didn’t fuckin notice you flirtin with him? You laughin at all his jokes and shit,” Elvis spits.
Your body instinctively recoils as he jerks you closer to him.
“I wasn’t flirting with him, you ass. I was just having a conversation with him!” you reply, infuriated by Elvis’ accusations. “Am I not allowed to have a conversation with your friends now?”
“Not with him. I can tell you like 'im.”
“Jesus fucking Christ, Elvis. For the last time, I was not flirting with Scotty. We were just having a conversation.”
This time you’re successful in ripping yourself away from Elvis’ grasp. You cross your arms over your chest and stick your chin out toward Elvis with a smug expression pasted on your face.
“Jealous, are we?” you ask with a quirked eyebrow and a smirk.
“Damn straight.”
He takes a step closer and glares down at you. His normally sparkling bright eyes have morphed into a deep shade of blue. His plump lips are pressed into a straight line with two small dimples on either side of his frown. With eyebrows furrowed and nostrils flared, he looks like a wild animal on the verge of going in for a kill. His fingers lift to your face, stretching out to drag against your skin. They travel from your hairline down your cheek and trace along your jawline. When they reach your neck, Elvis gently curves his fingers around the skin underneath your chin. He squeezes your throat firmly, tilting your head up toward him. You feel your mouth pop open with the pressure on your esophagus. You’re completely helpless. All you can do is stare up at him and wait to see what he does next. You can barely gulp under the pressure of his fingers on your throat. He turns your face in his hands, lowering his lips down to your ear, and, in a tickled whisper, he speaks.
“I know what you should be for Halloween, darlin. Mine.”
He gently nips at your earlobe and your eyes automatically shut. His fingers squeeze again as he drags his hot, wet lips down the side of your face and onto the skin underneath your jaw. He pushes against you, walking you backward. You whimper as your back hits the wall and his fingers push deep into your throat. With his free hand, he traces down your hairline with his pointer finger. He applies barely enough pressure to give you goosebumps as his finger trails down your shoulder and the bare skin of your arm.
“Somebody’s a lil goosebumpy,” he says breathily into your ear. “Wonder why.”
All you can do is release a loud breath and open your eyes. His lips are parted, his tongue circling over his teeth as his eyes tear up and down your figure. His fingers reach the hem of your dress and deftly flip it up to slide underneath. His touch is freezing cold and you can already feel goosebumps raising on your legs to match the ones on your arms. He works his way underneath your thigh and grips the skin to hoist your leg onto his hip. Once secure there, you tighten your grasp on him and pull his hips flush against your own.
“Such a nice dress, baby girl,” he murmurs against your ear. He nips at it again and you gasp. “Shame I’m gonna destroy it.”
You giggle as he releases your throat and slides his fingers onto your jawline. He holds your face steady as he stares down at you and thrusts his hips into yours. You gasp again, your eyes closing against your will. You can feel his length, hard against your thigh and threatening to slip in between your legs. His hand crawls across your leg onto the bottom of your ass and he squeezes hard, his short nails digging into the skin. You feel your back arch and head jut out, begging him to kiss you.
“Uh-uh. Be good, honey,” Elvis says raspily. “Be good if you wanna get fucked good. Understand?”
“Yes.”
“Yes, what,” he growls, thrusting his hips against yours and clamping his grip down harder on your ass and jaw.
“Yes, sir,” you choke out in a pathetic whimper.
“Good girl.”
His fingers dance across your ass and slide over the fabric of your panties. He traces the lace on the side of your hipbone and then slips a finger underneath the strip. Your stomach starts to turn, an uncomfortably needy sensation growing in your gut. Your heat is quickly beginning to throb and swell as he toys with the band to your panties. His other hand still holds your face captive so that you have no choice but to stare directly at him as he teases you mercilessly. He expertly shifts the panties to the side.
“What have we here?” he grumbles and slips a finger over your folds.
You shudder and lean your head back against the wall as his finger slides easily across the sensitive nerves. You’re already dripping for him.
“What a good, nice pussy. Already all wet for me.”
He runs another finger along the folds and you bite your lip. You buck your hips forward gently, craving more contact. But Elvis pulls his hand away and raises it to your lips. He pries your lips open with his fingers and slips his pointer finger into your mouth. You gladly accept it, swirling your tongue around his fingertip. You giggle on his finger as he runs his tongue over his teeth again. He yanks it from your mouth and then reaches back down to run it over your pussy. You bite your lip and wiggle onto his finger.
“Don’t move unless I tell you to.”
You whimper and wiggle anyway. Elvis’s fingers drop back down to your throat, pushing you harder against the wall. You jump and yelp in his grasp when he lightly slaps your pussy. A chill of excitement runs up your spine and you giggle.
“Bad, bad girl. First I find ya flirtin with my bandmates. Then I find ya disobeying me? Tut-tut,” he clicks his tongue and shakes his head disapprovingly. “I’m gonna hafta remind ya why you wanna be a good girl. Why you should listen to daddy.”
“Please, sir. Please…”
His touch returns to your pussy and he drags another finger up the folds. You resist the urge to wiggle under his touch with everything you have. He pushes the finger back and just barely inserts it into your entrance. You moan quietly with satisfaction, your eyes closing again. He draws small circles around your entrance before pushing a finger up inside of you. You can’t resist the urge to wiggle and drop your hips down to meet his finger as he begins to slowly pump in and out of you.
“Yeah, you like that don’t ya, baby girl?”
“Yes, sir,” you moan quietly, sliding your palms onto Elvis’ chest.
He inserts another finger, pumping expertly in and out of your wet pussy. Within a matter of moments, he’s added another finger and the air between you is filled with the gurgling sounds of your wetness and the quiet exhales of your breath as you try not to moan too loudly. Some of the party guests laugh from the room just downstairs and you bite your lip to keep quiet. Now with three fingers thrust inside of you, Elvis starts to pump you faster and faster. Your hips can’t resist slamming down onto his fingers as they move up to meet you. You glance over at him to see his mouth open as he mimics your expressions, his dark eyes trained on yours as he watches the pleasure he’s making you feel flash across your face.
You both suddenly freeze as you hear voices entering the entryway just underneath you. Your fingers curl around Elvis’ suit jacket and he leans forward, his body pressing against you.
“I gotta go. Wife’s expecting me home in time to take the kids out for candy. You seen Elvis or Y/N around? I wanted to thank them for the party and let them know I’m on my way.”
“I’m not sure where they are, but I’ll let them know you took off a little early!”
You clutch onto Elvis’ suit jacket, burying your face in his hot, sticky neck. His fingers are still inside of your pussy and you can feel your walls clenched around him with the sudden shock. You bite onto his shoulder as you, yet again, resist the urge to wiggle down onto his glorious fingers. You can feel his hot breath on your ear as his chest rises and falls under your grasp. You both wait in silence with bated breath until you hear the front door slam shut. Even then, you both pause, frozen until you’ve been in silence for several minutes.
Eventually, Elvis pulls away with a smirk pasted between his red cheeks. He wastes no time, resuming pumping in and out of you at the same speed he was using before you were so rudely interrupted. Your hips quickly fall into time with him, jerking down toward his fingers as they slam in and out of your dripping pussy. You lean your head forward and bite onto his shoulder again, trying to remain as quiet as possible. You feel his fingers dancing across the strap of your dress as he yanks it down onto your arm. He pulls the top of your dress down to expose your breast. With his free hand, he gently massages the skin with his fingers. You can’t resist a moan when he takes your nipple into his teeth, pulling on the skin. He swirls his tongue around the sensitive nub and then tugs on it again. You grip hard onto his jacket as you can feel yourself approaching an orgasm. The waves of pleasure build higher and higher as your back arches into the wall behind you.
“Who owns you? Say it.”
Your mouth moves to form the words, but he curls his finger inside your walls, and you yelp.
“Say it.”
“E-e…” your attempt is interrupted by a string of moans as your climax comes closer and closer.
Your eyes squeeze closed hard with the mixture of pain and pleasure. You finally throw your head back against the wall as pleasure overtakes your body. You shudder against Elvis as you come down from your high. You wheeze breaths as he removes his fingers from you. He slides them into his mouth, cleaning them one by one. He releases your thigh and it falls to the ground with a thump. You reach up to brush some sweaty hair from your forehead as you catch your breath. You move to step toward the bathroom, but Elvis grabs onto your wrist.
“I ain’t done with you yet,” he growls, pushing you back against the wall. “You disrespected me. You better make it up.”
“How can I do that, sir?” you ask, playing along.
“Why don’t you tell me, mama?”
You smirk and bite your lip as you lift your leg and press the bottom of your heel onto his chest, pushing him back slowly. Once he’s far enough away, you step toward him and lift the jacket off his frame. You grab ahold of his tie, pulling it harshly against his neck as you drop down to a squat. Your fingers slowly undo the clasp of his belt and slide it out from the notches on his pants. You smirk up at him as you pull the pants down just far enough to see his member bulging in his boxers. Tracing a finger over it makes him shudder and inhale a sharp breath. You lean forward and lick it through his underwear, the precum already leaking through the blue fabric. Your fingers hook under the band of his boxers and pull them down just far enough for his dick to spring free. You hum happily at the sight of his girth and lean forward to drag your tongue from the base up to the tip.
When you reach the tip and taste the salty precum in your mouth, you press a kiss to it and then pull away to glance up at Elvis. He smirks down at you and grabs a fistful of your hair to press your mouth forward onto his dick. You open your lips, sucking him into your throat. You start to slowly bob your head forward against him, sucking extra hard on the tip. With each forward motion, you can taste his salt as your motions suck more out. His fingers grip your hair and you wince at the stinging pull on your roots. You grip the fabric of his pants as you jerk forward and back on his dick. It hits the back of your throat and you gurgle a little, pulling back to readjust.
You deep-throat him a few more times, humming onto him when he whispers quiet curses and grunts. You feel his member starting to twitch in your mouth and increase your speed, adding your hand to the base of his dick so you can pump him while you suck him off. After a few more seconds, he starts to jerk against your tongue and you pump him harder as he releases his warm cum into your mouth. You swallow, shuddering as the warm liquid slides down your throat. You pull away when he's finished, licking the tip clean as you glance up at him through your eyelashes.
In the blink of an eye, he’s back to pushing you against the wall, one of his hands holding both of your wrists flush above your head. The other hand pumps his dick a few times before he slides into you, a little sloppily. You both moan together at the intense pleasure.
“Fuck, mama, you take it so good,” he growls.
He starts to thrust against you and your hips immediately find a rhythm with him. Your head leans back against the wall. The space between you is filled with the sounds of your whimpers, his grunts, and skin slapping against skin. He pumps you mercilessly, slamming into you so hard that your body jerk back against the wall with the force.
“I wonder if they’ll host anything for Christmas?”
Your head jerks to the side and your eyes fly open as you realize more people are coming into the entryway. You glance back at Elvis with wide eyes, panic settling in between the moments of painful pleasure. He shakes his head but continues to thrust as the voices grow louder. You bite your lip hard, worried that you’re drawing blood, to keep from moaning. You can’t help but whimper quietly when he hits your g-spot unexpectedly. His hand immediately releases your wrists and clamps onto your mouth. You bite onto his fingers as he quietly hisses and glances toward the departing guests just below you.
He leans forward, pressing his forehead against yours as he slams into you again and again. You raise your leg, pushing his hips deeper into you as your back arches and your eyes squeeze tightly shut. You bite down hard on his fingers and start to shudder under his thrusts. He hisses. You drop your hands onto his back, ripping at the fabric and digging your nails into the muscles of his back. You can feel the sticky sweat drying on his forehead as he buries his face in your neck and convulses under your grip. You both shudder for a few moments, coming down from your highs.
By the time the front door is slamming shut with your guests’ departure, you’re both heaving in silence and trying to catch your breaths. Elvis’ face is still buried in your neck as he releases hot breaths onto your skin. Your fingers have uncurled on his back, resting in flat palms across his sweaty skin. He pulls back and slides himself out of you before pulling up his underwear and zipping up his pants.
You slip the strap of your dress back onto your shoulder and re-cover your breast. He bends down and hands you your panties, which he helps slide on one leg and then the other. You lean against the wall for support and use Elvis’ shoulders while he redresses you. Your legs are shaking gently with exhaustion. They feel like noodles and your pussy feels too swollen to fit inside your dainty lace panties.
Elvis’ fingers slide onto your chin, clutching it between his pointer finger and thumb. He swipes his thumb over your lips and then tugs your face toward him. He presses his lips sweetly against yours, kissing you perfectly on the mouth. Your eyes flutter closed and you sigh contentedly into the kiss. When he pulls back, he smiles down at you. You lean forward, running a hand through his wet black hair to push it back into place.
“That’s my good girl. You’re mine, Y/N. Don’t you ever forget it,” Elvis says gruffly, pressing another kiss to your forehead.
You intertwine your fingers into his and lean into the chaste kiss with a smile.
“I never forgot in the first place. But, I do have to admit that if you’re gonna punish me like this every time you get jealous, I might have to forget more often,” you reply with a smirk.
Elvis chuckles and pulls you into his arms for a warm hug. You nestle into his chest, closing your eyes to absorb his warmth.
“I guess we should get back to our party, huh?”
“I guess so. Since, apparently, we’re on-tap for Christmas, too. I’ll meet you back here, then, same time?”
“Anytime, mama.”

“Ugh!!” you groan, slamming the eyeliner pencil down onto the bathroom counter.
You reach for the face towel again, wetting it and leaning toward the mirror so you can see well enough to carefully remove the hideous smudge that you just made. Your hands shake just the smallest bit as you blink away tears of frustration.
“You doin okay in here?”
You glance up the mirror to see the reflection of your husband leaning against the doorframe to the bathroom. You shake your head and scoff.
“I just can’t get this stupid eyeliner to work. It keeps smudging and the lines are all uneven. And now I’m gonna have to redo basically my entire face because I’ve accidentally erased half of the white paint trying to fix it,” you complain, dropping the rag onto the counter and staring hopelessly down at the disheveled mess of makeup scattered around you.
You’re trying to get ready for a Halloween costume party. You and Elvis are going as vampires. While Elvis neglected to go for the full look with face paint and makeup and everything, you never half-ass your costumes. You bought the whole shebang: white face paint, sponges, eyeliner, and adhesive fangs. You’re all good to go…if you could just get this stupid makeup to work right.
“I’m sure it ain’t that bad. Lemme see ya.”
You see Elvis approaching out of the corner of your eye, his massive black figure a shadow in your peripherals. You heave a sigh as his hands come to rest on your shoulders. He gently squeezes the tender muscles between your neck and shoulder and rests his chin on top of your head. Your eyes flick up to the mirror and you gaze at your husband through the glass. He smiles, his eyes running up and down your figure in the mirror. You quirk an eyebrow, wondering what he sees. He gently rotates you, holding you out at arms-length so he can assess the damage. You sniff, embarrassed by your inability to get the job done. His fingers wrap gently around your jaw, turning your face from side to side. He stares down at you, his eyebrows furrowed over his beautiful shining blue eyes.
“Ah that can be fixed, darlin,” he says. “Come ‘ere.”
He pats the toilet seat. You sit, the itchy black material of your costume scratching your thighs. Elvis rummages around, gathering some materials before he drops to his knees between your legs. You shift so that he can fit between your thighs. He snatches up the white face paint and dabs a sponge into it, raising it up to your skin. You close your eyes as he gently pats the liquid all over your face. Then, he takes some white powder to set it. You squeeze your eyes shut as it dusts around your face.
“Open for me, doll.”
You open your eyes, eyelashes fluttering to flick away the stubborn clumps of powder. Elvis smiles and nods, looking satisfied with his work.
“How did you know to do that? Use the powder, I mean?”
While you ask your question, he reaches for the eyeliner pencil and twists it so that the tiny black tip emerges from the capsule.
“Baby, you're forgettin that I’m in showbusiness,” he says with a smirk. You giggle and lean forward so that he can see your eyes better.
His fingers firmly wrap around your jawbone and he tilts your head up. Your vision is naturally lifted to the ceiling but you sneak a glance down at him as he gently rests the side of his palm against your cheekbone. He carefully and gingerly swipes the eyeliner pencil along your waterline. You try not to blink, the soft pencil tickling your eyelashes. You can’t help a smile as it spreads across your face.
“What’re ya smilin at?” Elvis pulls back and you glance down at him, gigglings rising into your chest.
“Nothing. Just you,” you reply, biting the corner of your mouth.
“Well stop it,” he jokes, shaking his head. “You gonna mess me up.”
You look back up to the ceiling as he returns to his diligent work. Out of your peripherals, you watch him scoot closer to you and tilt his head as he concentrates on getting the lines just right. His hand comes to a gentle pause by the edge of your eye. You glance down at him, wondering what’s wrong. He’s staring up at you, his eyes trained intensely on yours. There’s a tiny crease on his forehead from his concentration. You want to reach out and smooth it over but you can't move.
“What?” you ask, suddenly worried something’s gone terribly wrong. Elvis just shakes his head and smirks.
“Nothin. Just you,” he says and you smirk as a quiet chuckle escapes your lips.
His fingers tighten on your jaw and his eyes flick down to your lips and stay there for a few seconds before he leans in, pressing his lips firmly against yours. You kiss him back immediately, bending forward to rest your hands on his shoulders. The hand that was holding the eyeliner pencil lowers and then returns to cup your jawline and neck. His fingers wrap around the back of your head, pulling you closer to him. You slide forward just a little on the smooth toilet seat, gripping onto the velvety fabric of his vampire cape. One of his hands falls to your thigh, squeezing your skin through the black dress. You accidentally moan quietly into the kiss and then start to laugh, your lips slipping from his.
“Hey, listen, I know you don’t wanna wear makeup, but you need at least one thing,” you say, leaning over to reach for the deep red lipstick you’d picked to match your costume.
You also grab the handheld mirror from your makeup bag and lift it up, gently swiping the lipstick around your lips. You place them both down and giggle, glancing at Elvis with a mischievous expression. He tilts his head to the side, shooting you a confused look.
You slide your fingers onto his neck and into his slicked-back black hair. You lean forward and press your lips to his again, kissing him exactly once before dragging your lips to the side of his mouth and nudging them against his skin to spread around the red material. You can feel his fingers tighten on your thigh as you drag your lips down his neck, nipping gently at the skin there. You pull back with a satisfied smirk pasted on your face. Elvis looks shocked, his eyebrows raised and eyes wide.
“Not exactly blood but close enough. It looks alright,” you say, placing your hands on his.
He lifts his fingers up and intertwines them with yours, squeezing your fingers. He smirks at you before running a tongue over his canines.
“On second thought, maybe I will wear them teeth,” he responds, raising your finger to his lips to give your fingertip a soft bite.
“Well, Count Presley, you have permission to turn me anytime.”
He raises his eyebrows and you giggle as you lean forward for another kiss.

You can’t move. You can’t breathe. You can’t do anything. He has you completely under his gaze, his power, his control. You’re so shocked by his boldness and by the fact that he’s kept your…intimates all this time that you don’t know what to do with yourself. Your brain is somehow simultaneously stalled and spinning at 60 miles an hour. As your brain sprints to try and catch up with his words, it continues to turn around the meaning behind them. Your name? How does he know your name? Oh, of course. With Jerry and the Memphis Mafia at his disposal, he has unlimited resources. Any information he could want to know is at his fingertips. He could probably dig your name up from a photo of your face in a matter of moments with little to no effort on his part.
“Answer the question, darlin,” Elvis repeats himself, something you can imagine he doesn’t do very often. “These belong to ya, don’t they?”
“Y-yes,” you choke out.
Against your wishes, your voice cracks halfway through the sentence and you gulp. He smirks, leaning his head back to drag his eyes down your face and body again.
“That’s a good girl. Now, let’s talk business,” he finally releases your jaw but you feel yourself lean forward into the open space between you, desperately willing his fingers to return and touch you again. “Our arrangement’ll be very simple, very easy. You keep me company, I pay ya.”
You gulp, your eyes dropping down to the deep red carpet to trace the fabric neurotically.
“Wha-what sort of company would I be keeping you?”
“Honey,” he says, glancing at you with an exasperated expression. “Do I really gotta hash out every damn detail for ya? In that case, maybe I don’t wantcha. I could always find another lil girl just like ya. Is that what you want?”
“No.”
You respond too quickly, embarrassingly fast. But you dare to lift your eyes to his and shake your head once. No, that’s really not what you want. At all.
“Good. S’what I thought. Now, Jerry will arrange everythin, tell you where and when to be, what to wear, and if there are any special instructions. Any payment’ll be taken care of after. Now, I ain’t gonna make ya do nothin you don’t wanna do, but I expect ya to follow my rules and listen to ya daddy. I expect ya to learn fast and remember what I like. I expect ya to be here when I request you. Y’understand?”
He’s towering over you. Your chest heaves in and out as you stare up into his seemingly cold, unforgiving blue eyes. You nod, your mouth open even though you’re unable to choke any words out. You wonder why he’s telling you all this, whether it’s to be kind and give you a realistic view of how your arrangement will work or if it’s just so that you don’t inconvenience him while you’re fucking.
“And if ya good,” his fingers gently slide onto your neck and close carefully around the skin, forcing your chin up toward him and just barely restricting the air flow into your wind pipe, “you can have whatever you want, baby girl. If you’re a good girl for daddy.”
You can feel your eyes widen at his words. You can have whatever you want…Honestly, right now, all you want is a stable job and a better apartment. But as the words tumble around your brain, temptation swirls in every corner. You see jewels, diamonds, crystals, furniture, cars, dresses, shoes, bags, anything you could ask for. And for the first time in your life, it all feels like it’s within your grasp. As if he could see the gears behind your forehead grinding, he repeats himself.
“Anything you want, darlin.”
Your eyelashes flutter under the pressure of his gaze. His head leans down slightly toward you and you feel your mouth widen and chest rise up toward him. His fingers squeeze onto your neck as he leans ever closer, tilting his head. His eyes drop onto your lips and stick there as you feel his hot breath ghost over your skin. While his head turns to move into the perfect kissing position, your eyes follow him. You’re stuck, caught in his net, mesmerized by him. The pressure he’s putting on your neck is starting to make you feel lightheaded and your eyelashes are sticking together with the weight of desire. You can practically feel the warmth from his body radiating onto you. Your lips feel swollen and they pulse as if some invisible force is yanking them forward, begging them to press against Elvis. Your head bobs forward with temptation, just a bit.
But as you stare up at him, his eyes still locked on your lips, your cousin’s words sneak their way into your train of thought. You feel your body pull away from Elvis just an inch. Be careful in there…he’s been known to be a little unfaithful…just don’t get into a bad situation with him. Was this what Steve meant by ‘a bad situation’? Did he know that Elvis would ask you to become his…his…The words circle around and around mercilessly. But you push them away, staring back into Elvis’ eyes and observing the structure of his incredibly handsome face.
Bad situation? Is it really…that bad? It’s not as if Elvis is an old man, decrepit and disgusting, begging you to suck him off. In fact, he’s really being incredibly cordial about the whole thing. He’s explained everything, ensured payment, and offered you the choice to back out. And it’s not as if you have a spouse or a significant other to return to. You’re as single as can be and have no attachments or children. Now that you have no job, you’re also free to travel. No job…you need the money. Easy money. The easiest. And you can’t imagine that you won’t also get pleasure out of it, considering the throbbing sensation that’s been plaguing your lower stomach and crotch during the entire conversation. Look at him, for god’s sake. He’s beautiful. What was there to dislike about it? How could this be a ‘bad’ situation?
Just as you steel yourself to respond, Elvis shifts his fingers and the light catches on something. The object reflects brightly into your eye and your gaze locks onto a golden band around his finger. The fourth finger of his left hand, to be exact. His ring finger. You clench your teeth together. He’s married. HE’S MARRIED, FOR GOD’S SAKE. What the hell are you thinking? You can’t get involved with him, in any capacity. The man is married to one of the most beautiful women on the planet and you think you can compare?
You don’t sleep with married men. Even if they are Elvis Presley.
Finally resolved, you step back, away from him, and shake your head.
“No. No, I’m sorry. I can’t agree to this. This is wrong,” you say, only half aware that you’re actually voicing the words out loud.
You glance up at him to see that he’s crossed his arms over his chest. His eyebrows are raised in shock and his eyes quickly flick up and down your body. Silence settles and your heart begins to pound but not in a delightful lusty way. No, this is fear. You start to realize what you’ve done, that you’ve refused perhaps the most wanted man on the face of the earth, that you’ve said no to a man who probably never hears the word. The words ‘bad situation’ start to scream in your mind, enlarged at the forefront as you begin to understand what Steve had been trying to say. You’re alone with Elvis in his dressing room, the door closed, without protection or anyone to call for help. You don’t even know the man and you’ve just refused his sexual advances. How could you allow yourself to get into this situation? You should have listened to Steve, you should ha-
“Aright,” Elvis finally responds, hardening his jaw. “If that’s how ya really feel I ain’t gonna push ya.”
Your breath stops. Like actually stops. Is he joking? You can’t tell. Either way, he’s hardened his exterior and the friendly, intimate vibe that had grown between you has entirely vanished. Tension has taken its place and your fingers begin to pick at the fabric of your dress, pulling the loose string on the left pocket. It’s a nervous habit. One that you should stop but what does it matter now? It’s not like you need the dress anymore.
“Okay,” you say stupidly, not knowing what else to do.
“You’re free to go, darlin. You don’t gotta wait around here if you ain’t interested,” he says.
You awkwardly stumble forward and then twitch before turning around and approaching the door. You squeeze your eyes shut as you walk toward it, wishing more than anything that you could just evaporate into thin air. You reach out for the doorknob, resting your fingers on the cold metal. But your intrusive thoughts get the better of you and you blurt out.
“Are you…mad at me?” you cringe, even as the words escape your lips.
What do you care, anyway? You’ll probably never even see him again. Nevertheless, his eyes rotate up to meet yours and a soft smile spreads across his face. He releases a quiet chuckle and shakes his head.
“No, I ain’t mad. Just…surprised,” he responds.
You stare at each other for a tense moment, your fingers hesitating on the knob before you turn to finally exit the room. Just as you start to push the door open, Elvis stops you.
“I’ll have Jerry give ya his number. In case ya change your mind,” he says.
You glance at him over your shoulder with wide eyes and nod. He’s staring at you, without expression. Well, there is an expression there but you can’t discern exactly what it is.
“Okay,” you repeat that stupid word, vowing to never use it ever again once you step out of the room. You push against the door again but the task that you’ve been sent into the room to accomplish in the first place manages to reemerge into your mind. You spin hesitantly. “You know…I think, uh…”
You lift your eyes to see that his expression has changed. He had turned to fiddle with something but is now glancing at you over his shoulder. The gaze you share is awkwardly stretched across a diagonal plane. His eyebrows are raised in curiosity.
“I think that it would be…that your fans would appreciate if you said something about all of this. The death, the turmoil, the unrest. All of it. I think that if, um…if you said something, from the heart, you know, I think it would…help, maybe. If just a little. I know that it would give me hope.”
“I don’t think it’ll help much. It’s just words.”
“Well I think that…while you can think and talk and stand and walk, you should do it. And do it in a way that helps as many people as possible. While you can dream, you should and your music helps people with their dreams. It sounds silly but…you make their dreams a reality, for a lot of them.”
You stumble through the sentence, all of the advice given to you by both Jerry and Steve completely erased from your brain and replaced with your own jumbled thoughts. Elvis nods his head up and furrows his eyebrows in thought. You offer a small, awkward smile. Your heart is still slamming against your chest as you push yourself out of the room and into the dark, cold hallway.
Immediately, the hair on your arms raises as goosebumps settle on your skin. The temperature change is ridiculously noticeable, almost eerily so. You close the door and collapse against it, sliding down onto the freezing hard floor. You feel like crying, although you’re not exactly sure why. Your entire body is vibrating and tears are threatening to gather and spill from your eyes. You squeeze your lids closed tightly and curl up into yourself, hugging onto your legs and allowing your body to manically rock back and forth for a moment while you calm down. After a few deep breaths, you’re able to lean your head back against the door, eyes still closed, as your heart slows back down to its normal rhythm.
At the sound of a vaguely familiar, raspy voice, you jerk back to attention and peer around the corner to see Elvis’ round manager waddling around the hallway, evidently searching for something. You watch as he disappears down the hall and slowly bring yourself to stand. You have to get out of there.
You curl your arms over your chest as you wander down the dark halls in search of Steve. You have nowhere to go now. No work to return to. An apartment, but one with a roommate who you’d really rather not face right now. No parents to call, no siblings to turn to. Steve is the closest and best option you have right now. You step back the way you think you remember the control room was. You definitely get lost for a few minutes, wandering around like a confused sheep. Finally, after what feels like hours, you see light growing brighter around a corner. You round it and breathe a sigh of relief when you see the familiar room. To your comfort, you also see both your cousin and Bones Howe standing in the room, prepping to leave for the night. You step into the room.
“Hi,” you whisper into the silence.
Steve and Bones both turn at the sound of your voice. Steve offers a sad smile and you return the expression as he approaches you.
“Hey,” he takes ahold of your arm and steers you into the corner as Bones finishes cleaning up the room. “Are you okay? How was it?”
“It was…fine, I guess. I mean, nothing happened, if that’s what you’re asking,” you say, tightening your crossed arms over your chest.
“Oh…good,” Steve responds. “Well, I’m not sure what you said to him but whatever it was, it worked.”
“What do you mean?”
“He just came out. He wants to do the song,” a small grin spreads across Steve’s handsome features. Your eyebrows raise and you nervously smile, suddenly uncomfortable at the thought of Elvis still lurking below you.
“Oh, great! I’m glad to hear it. Really glad,” you respond, your eyes filling with tears.
You aren’t exactly sure why the sadness is rising so rapidly and powerfully in your chest, but you’re feeling an overwhelming sense of emotion at the moment. Steve obviously notices because his grip tightens and he angles his head to try and catch your eyes.
“Hey, Y/N, is everything okay? He didn’t hurt you, did he?”
Your eyes flick up into Steve’s concerned ones and you vehemently shake your head.
“No, no not at all. I just…I’m surprised, that’s all. And um…honestly extremely stressed,” you say.
“What’s wrong?”
You gulp and take a deep breath, trying to subdue your emotions before you continue.
“Steve, I don’t have a job. I hate my apartment. I hate my roommate more and I know that when I go back to tell her I’m unemployed, she’s gonna give me shit about it until I find a new job. But the fact of the matter is that I’m sick and tired of living paycheck to paycheck. I don’t want to work at a diner anymore. I don’t want to work for minimum wage. I want a real job where I do real things and learn real skills. And I…I don’t know where I’m gonna live. I don’t know how I’m gonna live.”
You choke up, the tears blurring your vision. You avert his eyes and sniff frustratedly, angry at yourself for being so vulnerable.
“Woah, woah, slow down. Listen, I don’t want you to worry about any of that. I-” he stops, his eyebrows furrowed. “I thought you and Elvis made some kind of arrangment?”
“No. We didn’t. I backed out.”
“That’s fine. That’s fine. Listen, you don’t need his money. You can work for me here at NBC while you look for another job, a good job. I’ll help you learn some basic skills and maybe I know someone who’s looking to hire. You can stay with me at the apartment for a while. I have an extra bed there, anyway. Everything’s gonna be fine. I promise. Besides, I got a lot of favors to pay back.”
You laugh, sniffing up some snot that’s dangerously close to sliding out of your nose. You reach up to wipe it with your sleeve as Steve smiles and brings you into a hug. You close your eyes, taking in his friendly warmth and squeeze him back to release some stress.
Once he releases you, he smiles and awkwardly looks around for a moment before speaking.
“Well…we sort of need to go record this song with Elvis, but, uh…maybe you could get some rest? There’s an employee break room just down the hall from the recording studio and there’s a couch in there. It’s warm and I can probably dig up some more blankets. Maybe you can just relax and I’ll come find you afterward. That way you don’t have to confront him again.”
“That would…actually be great, Steve. Thanks,” you say quietly as he leans over to grab his jacket and the dress and boots that you’d placed on the table several hours earlier.
With his hand gently on your back, he leads you out of the control room and toward the room he mentioned, which is a few spaces down from the studio. It’s a safe enough distance for you. He leads you inside and rummages around for some blankets as you get settled on the very large, red velvet couch randomly positioned in the middle of the room. He returns with a couple of old and worn-looking blankets.
“I’m good, thanks,” you chuckle, curling up on the soft cushions of the couch.
“Sorry, they’re kind of disgusting,” he replies with a shrug. “Okay, uh. I gotta get going. Will you be okay here?”
“Oh absolutely. This is perfect,” you offer a small smile. Steve returns it even though you can tell he’s extremely tired and stressed himself.
“Great. I’ll come check on you after we’re finished.”
He turns abruptly, rushing out of the room. Just as he swings around the door you yell out.
“Steve!”
He sticks his head back into the room.
“Thanks.”
He just smiles frantically before disappearing behind the door frame. The room is warm but disheveled with things haphazardly tossed everywhere. There’s a fridge in the corner, a microwave on top of a table, and a row of cabinets with a small sink below it. There’s also an incredibly old coffee maker with a few mismatched mugs scattered around it. There are a few chairs splayed around a wooden table in a different corner and a couple of chairs that sort of match the couch. Everything is in muted shades of brown, tan, or orange. The only light in the room shines from a lamp across from you, near the door, which Steve had clicked on when you walked in.
You reach over to inspect the blankets, hoping that one might do, since you are a bit chilly in your short-sleeved dress.
“Still here?”
Your attention is snapped up to see Elvis’ producer, Jerry if you remember correctly, peering into the room at you. You shrug and nod.
“Still here.”
“Do you mind if I…?” he asks, gesturing toward the room. You shake your head.
“No, please. Come in.”
He does so, stepping in a few steps and then pausing to shove his hands into the pockets of his pants. An awkward silence settles between you and you wonder what this could be about.
“So, how did it go?” he asks and you resist the urge to roll your eyes. You’re getting really tired of people asking you that.
“Um…it didn’t,” you reply with another shrug. “I said no.”
“You did?” Jerry asks, his eyebrows shooting up toward his hairline. One of them disappears behind his sandy blonde waves.
“Yep.”
“Wow…”
“What?” you spit, offended by his response. What was that supposed to mean? Did he think you were easy? Is that why he’d picked you to pimp out?
“Oh, nothing. Just surprised. You’re the first one to ever turn him down,” Jerry explains and you gulp.
The first one…? How many have there been? As if he could hear your inner monologue, he continues.
“You’re not the first girl he’s handpicked out of the audience like this. He chooses them every so often.”
Ah, so Elvis had picked you. You suddenly feel extremely secure in your choice. Bad situation. Again, the words float around your brain. Elvis would have used you and then dropped you when he found someone else. You can already feel yourself healing, a smile dangerously close to revealing your relief.
“Oh, I see,” is all you can say.
“Even so, he wanted me to give you this,” Jerry says, handing over a card with his name and number printed on it in a clean serif font.
“I doubt I’ll use it,” you snort. “But thanks.”
“I’m just doing what he told me. It’s none of my business what you decide to do.”
He holds his hand up, backing toward the door.
“But if you change your mind for any reason, you can reach me on that number,” Jerry says and you glance back down at the card as he waltzes through the doorframe. “Oh, and one more thing.”
You glance up at him again.
“Elvis may handpick girls from his audiences but he’s never chased a girl like he has you. You’ve been on his list for a very long time.”
“On his list?” you hiss and snort again. “At the bottom of the list, I’m sure.”
“Try the very top of the list. Like…number one,” Jerry responds completely straight-faced.
Your mouth pops open as he disappears. Your eyes search the room in a panicked shock. How could that be possible? Little old you piqued the interest of Elvis Presley that much? It seems too hard to believe…
All the confidence you’d just wrestled back feels like it’s draining from you as you place the card down by the dress on the table. You glance around for a clock and find one above the door. Three a.m. Jesus Christ. You lay sideways on the cushions and close your eyes, breathing in and out rhythmically and begging for sleep to hit you quickly. As your mind wanders through the events of the day, you find your wish granted.
Not long after, you wake groggily, unsure how much time has passed since you laid down. You gently raise yourself to a seated position and stretch your arms up as you yawn. You hear a crick in your neck and groan, a noise which is quickly cut off as your sleep deprived brain latches onto another sound in the distance.
Someone’s singing. There’s a piano, as well, and as you listen more closely you can tell that it’s Elvis singing. You peer around you, trying to remember where that clock is. When you finally find it, you take in the time. Four-thirty a.m. An hour and a half. That was all you’d slept. But for whatever reason, you feel completely wide awake. You quiet your breath and concentrate, listening for Elvis’ sweet southern voice. You can’t help a smile crossing your face as it enters your ears. Something about it is utterly addicting, charming, enchanting. You feel your body moving before you even have a chance to realize what’s happening. You’re in the hallway, quietly stepping toward the recording studio. His voice grows louder and louder as you can begin to decipher the words he’s singing.
“Deep in my heart there’s a trembling question. Still I am sure that the answer, answer’s gonna come somehow. Out there in the dark, there’s a beckoning candle. And while I can think, while I can talk, while I can stand, while I can walk, while I can dream…”
You stop listening as you press your back against the wall, leaning your head against it. You bite your lip but your smile breaks through anyway, curling your cheeks up into a wide grin. He used your idea. He repeated your words. Your words. You lean your head toward the sound of his voice, closing your eyes to let it touch your soul. The way he’s singing is so different now than it ever has been before. So completely different. It’s like you can feel the words rumbling from his soul and reaching out to pull you into a warm embrace. The raspiness, the deep tone, the way his voice perfectly fits with the tune. It makes the hair on your arms stand up and goosebumps raise on your skin. It’s perfect.
You lean your head off the wall and glance hesitantly into the room. You suddenly need to see his face while he sings, to understand what passion looks like written across his handsome features. You feel drawn to him, intrigued by him, intoxicated by his voice. You peer over the corner of the wall to see him, standing by the piano with his brows furrowed. He’s staring down at a piece of paper with what you assume to be the song lyrics written on it. His hair is disheveled and he runs his fingers through it, bouncing the beautiful black locks. Your eyes run up and down his figure and you can feel our stomach twisting and turning.
When you flick your eyes back up, you jump back into the darkness. He is looking right at you, his bright blue eyes shining in the dim lighting. You release a gasp and then turn, curling your arms over your chest and half-running back to the safety of the employee break room. You burst inside and sit down on the couch to drop your head into your hands.
“What am I doing?” you whisper to yourself. “Get it together. You had your chance and you said no. Because you had to. Because it was the right thing to do. Live with that.”
You heave a deep breath and your eyes land on the card on the table, Jerry’s card. You huff frustratedly and reach out to grab it and shove it into the pocket of the red and orange dress.
As you reach into the pocket of the dress, your eyes squint when your fingers touch something crumbled up in the pocket. It feels like a wrapper or a piece of tissue or something. You fish it out and hold it up to your face, carefully uncrumbling it with your fingers and smoothing it out to read the chicken scratch scribbled on it. It’s a phone number and everything shocks back to you. It’s Trixie’s phone number, the girl you’d been standing next to during the special. You’d forgotten you’d put it back into the pocket of the dress when you took it from Barbara. As you eye the piece of paper, it begins to look more and more convenient and tempting. Your eyes flick up, locating the black telephone hanging on the wall in the corner. You bite the inside of your cheek as you lift it off the receiver.

“Annie, come on let’s go!” her friend shouts, tugging at her arm.
Annie laughs, readjusting the white silk sash which cuts across her breast and torso in a diagonal. In cheap plastic diamond-lookalike beads, a five-letter word stretched across the sash. BRIDE. While the observers at the poker and blackjack tables might understandably think Annie to be the bride, she isn’t the one getting married. Annie doesn’t even have a partner let alone a fiancé. No, it’s been upwards of five years since Annie last had a romantic relationship. Not that she's much minded being alone, considering the past five years have been the first time she was able to escape the boondocks of Louisiana to live a life that is solely her own.
But Annie couldn’t help but appreciate the attention and satisfaction of knowing how jealous of her the single middle-aged women blowing their life savings on the casino floor probably are. Although those women will be hoping to land some kind of man in their beds that night, Annie will be more than content to sleep alone. She’s even more glad for her solitude when she catches the eye of a disgustingly round man, eyeing her up and down as he wipes sweat from his brow. Unafraid and, frankly, pissed off, Annie stares back for a moment as her friend continues to stumble drunkenly through the casino floor, dragging Annie along behind her. Annie suddenly yanks her friend’s shoulder away just in time to avoid crashing into a casino worker laden down with poker chips.
“Woah there, Jessie. Slow down, hunny,” Annie says with a chuckle as the girl giggles and hiccups beside her.
Jessie, Annie’s best friend and the actual bride, has certainly been making the most of her bachelorette weekend. Although Annie isn’t sure how much of it Jessie will remember considering she’s been drunk off her ass for the vast majority of it. As the eldest of the group and the maid of honor, Annie isn’t drinking. And even if she was, she could hold her liquor better than any of the other bridesmaids in attendance. Annie has always been a tough nut to crack, even more impossible if you’re a man.
Annie is used to being the caregiver anyway, and it isn’t something that she finds inconvenient or irritating in any way. It's just part of who she is and she doesn’t mind that so much. For example, when drunken Jessie decided that the bridal sash was too much of a nuisance, she handed it off to a willing Annie, who accepted it without question. According to Jessie, Annie isn’t allowed to remove it under any circumstances. Although the sash isn’t really Annie’s style and maybe doesn’t match so well with her worn brown cowboy boots and light-wash flared jeans, she’ll wear it as long as Jessie requests it. Anything on the bride's special day.
Jessie leans heavily on Annie’s strong arm as they approach the theater inside the International Hotel, where the girls have been spending their weekend. A few more of the bridesmaids saunter up behind them, most tipsy at the least. Annie pulls out their tickets and hands the long strand of blueish paper over to the ticket taker who rips them off and hands back the stubs.
“Enjoy the show, ladies! Should be a good one for you tonight!” he says with a wink.
Annie holds on tighter to Jessie and shoots the man a displeased look. Annie’s never had the best track record with men and tends not to trust them, in general. On top of that, she was born and raised to be protective over the ones she loves, no matter the cost. And that's another thing she would never change about herself. Ever.
The troupe of young women walk into the theater and Annie’s eyebrows shoot up in shock. It’s certainly a different type of theater than the ones she’s used to. Louisiana has arts culture, sure, but the honky tonks and hayrides she’s been to in the past are vastly different than the big city feel of this coliseum. She can’t help but let her eyes circle around the ceiling, taking in all the ornate golds, blues, and reds which sparkle on the walls. The girls take their seats in a booth and a waiter approaches the table almost immediately. Jessie reaches for a drink menu, holding it upside down as she tries to slur out the name of an alcoholic beverage. Annie gently takes the menu from her grasp and turns to the waiter.
“Just waters, all round, please ‘en thank ya,” she says with a curt smile. The waiter nods before trotting off to fulfill the order. “So who’s even performin here tonight?”
Annie turns back to face her friends, her eyes flicking between the five of them. Sarah, Dottie, and Clarabelle are far too drunk to answer and Lenora just shrugs. Luckily, Leigh Anne smiles widely and nods.
“Last I heard, it was Elvis!” Leigh Anne replies, clapping her hands together excitedly. Annie had been shoving a piece of bread into her mouth but now she stops short, glancinng over at her friend with wide eyes.
“E-Elvis?” she repeats. “Elvis Presley?”
“I’m sorry, do you know another Elvis? Yes, of course, Elvis Presley! What’s wrong, sugar? Your face is whiter than a sheet all of a sudden.”
“I…it’s nothin,” Annie responds, dropping her eyes down and placing the bread back on her plate. The waiter returns with their drinks but as he moves to walk back to the kitchen, Annie grabs hold of his arm. “On second thought, whiskey on the rocks.”
In the next fifteen or so minutes that follow, the conversation flows freely and somewhat coherently between the bridesmaids. Jessie is beginning to sober up, slowly but surely. Annie remains silent, retracted into herself while she relives a life long passed and memories lost.
“You sure you’re alright, Annie?”
Annie’s head snaps up to see Leigh Anne staring over at her with furrowed eyebrows, her hand resting on Annie’s bicep reassuringly. Before Annie has a chance to respond, with a lie, loud music strikes up onstage and their attention is pulled to the shining gold curtains. They are extremely gaudy, shimmering incessantly in the lights as they pull apart to reveal a man in a striking white jumpsuit prancing onstage. The room erupts into screams, hoots, and cheers as Elvis Presley himself emerges and takes his position at center stage. Annie’s eyes immediately click onto his frame. It’s so unfamiliar now…
The last time she’d seen him, he was a scrawny little young man who wore pink silk suits from second-hand stores on Beale Street and dusty old shoes worth a whole ten cents. The man that stands before her now is decked out in a custom-made jumpsuit, fitted perfectly to his frame, which is also different. He seems taller somehow, more filled out, and beefier. He moves easier, with more elegance and more command. Her eyes travel up his frame, admiring the way the pants hug his legs tightly and how much his hair has grown out since she’d last seen him. It’s shaggy now, very stylish for the day, and so wild. She smiles at the chest hair poking out from between the open flaps of his jumpsuit. His face is fully-formed, masculine and classic with a long thin nose and plump shapely lips.
He’s a man now and Annie suddenly feels like a little girl on her parent’s farm back in Louisiana.
The band strikes up a chord and Elvis begins to sing. The room grows even louder with the rhythm of the music in conjunction with the fans singing along and screaming with joy. Annie winces as Jessie’s piercing shrieks fill her eardrums. Jessie flies to her feet and starts dancing, bouncing from foot to foot as she sings along with the music.
Annie has heard some of his songs, of course. Most of them, probably. But she can never bring herself to listen too closely to the lyrics. She always worries that the memories she’s buried will return with a vengeance to attack her heart all over again. Sometimes she still feels a dulled pain when she hears that deep, angelically southern voice. She notices now that it escapes raspier, deeper than it had been when she’d heard him sing so many years ago. She understands fully why the room has erupted into cheers and screams. It’s sexy, but she always knew that.
She’s kept up with his career. Loosely. She owns an album or two, she’d watched the ‘68 special on NBC on the miniature television at the diner. She's strangely proud to see how far he’s come but also jealous when she realizes that she’s barely moved at all.
“Isn’t he amazing!” Leigh Anne yells as she claps along to the music, a massive smile plastered on her face. Annie returns with a tight-lipped grin and nods.
“He’s much different than when I knew him,” Annie responds without thinking. Almost immediately, she feels the eyes of the entire bridal party on her.
“Excuse me?” Lenora shouted. “Knew him? How do you know Elvis Presley?”
Annie shakes her head dismissively.
“Okay, I barely knew ‘im. I saw him perform at the Lousiana Hayride and we…we spent a day together. That was all.”
“Spent a day together? Sugar!” Leigh Anne shouts, slapping Annie gently on the arm. Annie pulls back, throwing an incredulous expression at her friend. “Oh my god, you should totally try to go backstage to see him. I bet he’d let you back into his dressing room if he remembers you. Then, maybe, we can see it too!”
The girls erupt into giggles and fits of joy, but Annie shakes her head firmly.
“Absolutely not. It wadn’t anything special! We were jus…acquaintances. There ain’t no way he’d possibly remember me. And even if he somehow miraculously did, I wouldn’t want my reunion with ‘im to involve me beggin to let my friends backstage to see his underwear.”
As Annie snaps back to the present moment, she finds that the song has changed into an upbeat rhythm with a guitar riff continuing in the background. Annie can’t help but tap her foot to the beat as she watches Elvis’ leg bounce up and down anxiously. She smiles. He’s always had a jittery leg and she’d noticed it from the first time she saw him sing at the hayride.
“Some of y’all never been down south too much. Imma tell you a lil story so’s you’ll understand what I’m talkin bout,” Elvis’ deep voice reverberates throughout the room. “Down ‘ere we have a plant that grows out in the woods and the fields. And it looks somethin like a turnip green. Errebody calls it polk salad.”
Annie cocks her head at the mention of the familiar plant. She wracks her brain frantically, suddenly trying to recall whether the plan grows anywhere other than Louisiana. Before she can come up with the answer, he provides it.
“Used to know a girl lived down ‘ere. She’d go out in the evenings and pick her a mess of it, carry it home and cook it for supper. Just about all they had to eat, but they did alright.”
~ ~ ~
Annie’s breath stops and her eyes widen. Suddenly, she’s flashed all the way back to 1956. She was only eighteen at the time, freshly graduated from the little high school down the dirty country road. She’d just gone to the hayride for fun, not expecting much. But he’d been there and she’d witnessed the effect he had on women firsthand. Even back then, he had them screaming like there was no tomorrow. She’d never felt so alive in her life, everything in her screaming to touch him, to understand what all the fuss was about. As she and Jessie left the hayride that day, she’d accepted that she would never see him again. That Elvis Presley was out of her life, just a blink of a memory.
Of course, she was wrong. She saw him not even an hour later at the carnival which had come into town at the same time. He was leaning against a wall near the cotton candy stand. She’d become frozen, utterly enamored with him. She’d stared at him with wide eyes across the busy carnival grounds and he’d stared back. Then he’d approached her, against all odds. Little old Annie in her hand-me-down green dress with mud stains, holes ripped through the ends, and a little yellow patch sewn onto the back over a hole too big to patch up. Her little brown saddle shoes were a size too big and scuffed with irreversible grass stains.
But from the moment his stupid southern drawl reached her ears, Annie knew she was a goner. He swooped her up, carted her around the carnival to do all the activities. They’d played some games, he won her a tiny stuffed bear, they rode the ferris wheel together and sat side by side as the wind whipped through their hair. He’d drawn her into the house of mirrors where he pushed her against the cold glass and kissed her neck, something a boy had never done to her before. Her unbrushed hair was stuck into braids and his fingers trailed down the plaits as he gently ran his thumb across the texture of it. They shared a Pepsi and cotton candy. He paid. He’d wanted to walk her home but she refused. She couldn’t bear to have him see where she came from, where she lived. He couldn’t know.
Of course, he insisted and she denied, running off into the dark night through a path she knew he couldn’t follow.
But it hadn’t mattered what she’d done because he found her anyway. Somehow. She never did understand where he got the information from, but it was a small town and everyone knew where everyone else lived. And so the next morning, she was utterly shocked when she opened the front door to see Elvis standing right there in front of her with a bouquet of bright purple and pink flowers. She’d quickly taken the bouquet, stepped outside, and slammed the door behind her. Anger flowed through her veins.
“What the hell are you doin here?” she’d hissed, pushing him away from the windows.
“Well, damn honey, I just came to see ya since you ran off last night,” he said with a shrug. Annie’s face grew hot with embarrassment. She wasn’t playing a very good host.
“No, you can’t be here,” she replied, trying to push him down the steps and back the way he’d come. “Didja ever think maybe there’s a reason I didn’t invite ya here. Why I didn’t want ya to walk me home?”
“I did think bout that. Then I decided not to care,” he responded with a grin.
Annie wanted so badly in that moment to come up with a sassy answer matching his attitude, but nothing came to her mind except for a laugh. Glancing up into his shining blue eyes, she let one escape her lips before shaking her head and rolling her eyes.
“Fine. Thank ya. But you need to leave. If my brothers see ya here, I-”
“You’ll what?”
Both Annie and Elvis’ heads jerked to the side to see one of Annie’s brothers, Blake Landry, staring them down with his arms folded tightly over his chest. Annie’s heart began to ache with embarrassment. Her other three brothers were standing behind Blake. Wyatt, Cash, and John. All four of them were tall and strong, quite intimidating with their rippling muscles and white wife beater tank tops stained with mud, dirt, sweat, and probably beer. They all had their hair cropped tightly against their skulls, uneven in the back courtesy of the $2 haircuts from their neighbor down the street.
It was silly, really, but Annie had a dream that one day she’d be able to afford a real haircut. One like all those pretty ladies wore, the ones she saw when she went into town to sell her crocheted socks and scarves for extra cash.
“You datin our sister?” questioned Blake before he spat a loogie onto the ground. Blake was the oldest and he certainly acted like it.
“It ain’t nunna your business, Blake. It ain’t none of y’alls business neither,” she spat back, gesturing to her other brothers. “Don’t y’all got farm work to do or somethin?”
“Shut up Annie,” Wyatt, her youngest brother, spoke up. “We ain’t talkin to you.”
“Excuse me boy? I outta kick your good-for-nothin a-” Annie had taken a step forward, her fingers curling into fists, but Elvis grabbed onto her bicep to hold her back.
“I’m just visitin. I’m a friend and thought ya sister’d enjoy some flowers to brighten up the place. I’m Elvis. Nice to meet y’all,” he said, sticking his hand out toward Blake.
To Annie’s surprise, Blake had taken Elvis’ hand and shaken it. She could only watch in shock as Elvis hit it off with her brothers, having a full-on conversation with all four of them. Even Cash, the most difficult to please middle brother, seemed interested in what Elvis had to say. After a few moments of male bonding time, Annie knocked her fists on the wooden sideboard of the house.
“Still here, fellas. If y’all're gonna stand here in this heat all day and chit chat like you’re at a momma’s book club, I’ll just be on my way.”
She turned to go inside, but Blake’s voice stopped her.
“Hold on a damn minute, Annie. You ain’t gettin outta your work that easy. Cash went to the store but we can’t afford no meat. So ya gonna hafta get us more polk salad. I guess your fella here, nice as he is, is gonna hafta get lost.”
Before Annie had the chance to agree, Elvis spoke again.
“I can help. I ain’t afraid uh hard work,” Elvis says with a smile and a shrug.
None of the Landrys seemed to know what to do for a moment. The way Elvis was dressed, the way he smelled, the way he wore his hair. None of it suggested that he was familiar with the boondocks of southern Louisiana nor farm work. But there he stood, offering his services freely. He threw a wink at Annie when her brothers agreed to let him stay and help her harvest their dinner.
~ ~ ~
As snapshots of memory flash through Annie’s brain, she feels a small smile creeping into her cheeks. He’d looked such a fool, standing there so enthusiastically ready to help. It was endearing and Annie has never forgotten it. She’s suddenly overcome with a feeling of longing, yearning to know him better. It punctures her heart and soul.
“Down in Louisiana, lived a girl that I swear to the world, made the alligators look tame. Polk salad Annie. Gators got ya granny. Errebody said it was a shame cause her momma was a-workin’ on the chain gang.”
When the words “polk salad Annie” leave Elvis’ lips, Annie begins to feel hot and sick to her stomach. She could have pretended that it was another Annie, some other poor girl he’d picked up and put down just as quickly on his trips around the country. But everything he’s said…about her family. It's her, without a doubt. She is polk salad Annie.
She feels the blood draining from her face and has the intense urge to get up and leave as quickly as possible. Food poisoning…she could tell the girls she’s not feeling well, that it’s probably food poisoning from the hotel catering. As much as she doesn’t want to put a damper on Jessie’s bachelorette party, when the words fly out of Elvis’ mouth again, she feels physically ill to her stomach. The sensation is so sickeningly strong that it moves her to lean toward Leigh Anne.
“I hafta go. I’m sorry, tell Jessie I’m really sorry. I-I don’t know what’s happenin but I think Imma be sick,” Annie stammers.
Annie stands up, lightheaded immediately. She wavers back and forth for a moment, curling her fingers around the back of the booth for stability before regaining her balance. She hears Leigh Anne’s blurred voice as she asks if Annie needs help. She ignores Leigh Anne but makes the mistake of glancing back up at the stage as she turns toward the pathway to the exit.
Out of all the people in the audience, somehow Elvis’ eyes land directly on hers. She feels crazy for thinking it, but she swears he recognizes her. All of her remaining doubt dissolves as she watches what he does next. He smirks, winks, and sings the next lines of the song without tearing his eyes away from hers.
“A mean, vicious, straight razor-totin woman,” he growls into the microphone and Annie freezes in her tracks. “Lord have mercy.”
As he sings the words, Annie feels her eyebrows unwillingly quirk up in agreement. She notes how sweaty he is, how dark his hair looks as it shines with the sweat droplets, how bright blue his shining eyes are. It all comes together to make him utterly irresistible. One half of her brain encourages her to move forward. Go upstairs, escape this trap that he’s holding her in. But the other half is too commanding. It easily overpowers her mind and she plops back into her seat. Leigh Anne leans over to check on her but Annie doesn’t hear a thing. Annie is completely unable to tear her eyes from the stage and just nods with an open mouth as she tracks Elvis’ every movement onstage.
He remembers her. He actually remembers her so well that he’s written an entire song about her. She wonders momentarily if the other girls realize he’s singing about her but then remembers that she usually refuses to reveal her past unless it’s absolutely necessary. And it rarely is. Her family's past isn’t something she particularly enjoys talking about.
Everybody said it was a shame cause her momma was a-workin on the chain gang.
~ ~ ~
It was just after they’d left the house to go hunting for polk salad. They were walking through the woods behind the house to a spot a few miles away. The truck patch, where Annie knew there was always polk salad enough to pick. Their walk was silent at first, Annie too enraged and embarrassed to say anything. At the time, Annie had thought that Elvis probably didn’t know how to talk to a girl like her, a rough and tough farm girl from the deep south. But he finally spoke.
“You didn’t want me to come here cause you were embarrassed, weren’t ya?” he’d asked in that charming southern drawl.
Annie hadn’t responded at first, keeping her gaze firmly on the ground below her as she walked, trampling over sticks and stepping over stocks of grass and weeds. She’d never minded getting dirty and lived in a pretty consistent state of dirtiness since most of her life required her to do chores outside of the house.
“Ya know I grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi when I’s younger," he said. Annie’s head snapped up and she tilted it to get a better look at him. She let out a little chuckle. “That surprise ya?”
“Well…you just don’t look like nobody who grew up down here. In the slums, y’know.”
Annie suddenly felt very guilty for judging him. She hadn’t meant to make him feel alienated. She decided to keep her mouth closed but he continued anyway.
“Yeah we was poorer ‘en dirt back then. My daddy got sent to jail, so momma and I were on our own. We had to move out to a housin project. Momma didn’t always like it there but we did aright.”
Annie felt a pang of pain. If anyone could understand living in poverty it was her, but her ears locked onto something specific he’d said.
“Ya daddy went to jail?” she asked, speaking before she allowed herself to think through her actions.
“Yep. Cashed a bad check is all. He didn’t even do nothin bad. He was just tryna provide for us, ya know. Do his best,” Elvis said and cleared his throat.
A few moments of silence passed as Annie gathered the courage to say what she needed to share.
“My momma went to jail, too. She’s in there now, actually.”
“Yeah?”
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Elvis tilt his head to glance at her. She nodded.
“Yeah. Stole bread from a grocery store. She was just…tryna provide for us, too, I guess,” Annie responded with a gulp.
She hadn’t told anyone about that. Everyone in town pretty much already knew but she didn’t care to educate anyone else about her family history. Annie’s mother had been in prison for several years now and Annie visited every once in while but she didn’t like it there. The prison was dank and scary. She was uncomfortable seeing her mother there, skinny and pale, like a ghost of her former self. It broke Annie’s heart.
~ ~ ~
Annie feels tears gathering in her eyes but angrily refuses to let them fall, sucking a breath in through her teeth. Her mother had died in that prison, a few years ago. And it was all for stealing a loaf of bread and some milk to feed her starving children. Annie’s jaw clenches as she pushes her emotions deeper down into her stomach. Her eyes fall onto the tablecloth as she listens to Elvis sing.
“Erryday before supper time, she’d go down by the truck patch and pick her a mess uh polk salad, carry it home in a tow sack.”
~ ~ ~
The tow sack had been the closest thing to a purse Annie owned. While all the pretty ladies in town had blue purses or black ones or red ones made of leather and denim and reptile skin, Annie had a burlap sack. Sometimes those old sacks became a part of the dresses she wore to school, matching all the other little girls who wore old pillowcases and chicken feed bags as clothes.
“But ya know it wadn’t all that bad,” Elvis had continued cheerily. “Ya know my favorite thing bout livin down there in Tupelo?”
Annie shook her head as they finally reached the truck patch. She fluffed open the tow sack and laid it on the ground, dropping to her knees on the soft soil. Elvis followed her lead as he explained.
“I discovered gospel music. Y’ever heard gospel?”
“Course I have. Momma was a Baptist,” Annie replied with a small smirk which Elvis returned. “I heard plenty of gospel as a child. I seen it touch the soul of the singers.”
“Yeah!” Elvis replied enthusiastically, a wide grin creasing his cheeks into dimples.
Annie felt heat creeping into her neck and ears, adding to the already stifling temperature of the southern summer day. Annie reached toward the patch, wrapping her fingers around the stem of the polk salad plant and yanking it harshly out of the soil. It didn’t take much effort from her since she’d been practicing for so long. Annie was strong. She’d always been strong. Elvis joined her, ripping the roots out as he talked about his love for gospel music. Annie smiled. It had been a long time since she’d heard someone talk so sweetly about something they love. All her brothers talked about was beer, trucks, and guns. They probably couldn’t tell gospel music from classical.
She could see the sparkle in his eyes as he talked. At one point while they were pulling plants, their fingers reached for the same stalk. They both froze, their fingers overlapping on the stem. Just as Annie was about to jerk her hand back, Elvis wrapped his calloused fingers around hers and squeezed her fingers. She glanced up at him and he smiled. His eyes flicked down to her lips and she felt her breath hitch in her chest. He leaned forward ever so slightly but her hands flew to his chest to push him away. Her heart was slamming against her chest, pounding in her ears.
“Quit that,” she said. “I ain’t got time for no foolin round. I gotta family to feed.”
Even though she snapped at him, she didn’t mean a word of it. She felt a smile threatening to curl her lips up into a big grin and she was powerless to stop it. They picked a few more stalks of polk salad and then started back on the long trek to the house.
Her daddy was a lazy and no-count. Claimed he had a bad back. All her brothers were fit for was stealin watermelons out of my truck patch.
“What bout the rest of ya family?” Elvis asked. “You got a helluva lotta brothers.”
“Yeah,” Annie laughed. “Blake, Cash, and Wyatt. In that order. I’m the youngest so they always been extra protective of me. I don’t mind it none. They’ve protected me more than once against men in bars or diners.”
She tried to readjust her grip on the tow sack but it suddenly slipped from her grasp. Elvis had taken hold of it and he carried it with ease as they walked. Annie’s eyes traced down his flexed biceps and she noticed a thin line of sweat glistening along his hairline. She reached up with the sleeve of her dress to wipe her own sweat away. His cheeks were flushed red with the heat.
To her surprise, her free hands didn’t stay that way for long. Within a matter of moments, Elvis had intertwined his fingers into hers. At first, her instinct was to pull away, but his grip was too tight and she was glad it had stopped her. She settled into his hand. His palm was hot and sticky with sweat but she didn’t much care.
“I had a brother, too. He died when he was just a baby.
“Are you tellin me that we coulda had two Presleys runnin round down here?” Annie joked, raising an eyebrow. Elvis chuckled and nodded.
“Jesse was his name, after my grandfather.”
Annie glanced over at Elvis to see his eyes glimmering in the orange light of the setting sun. He was tearing up. Annie squeezed his fingers tightly.
“Ya know my best friend’s name is Jessie. Maybe God thought it’d be too powerful for the world to have two Presleys. So he put Jesse’s soul into my friend.”
Annie saw the corner of Elvis’ mouth twitch up into a small grin and she took a side step to be closer to him.
“Tell me bout ya brothers. What’re they like?”
Annie sighed, preparing herself to elaborate on the complicated relationships she shared with her brothers.
“Well Blake, the oldest, is a hothead. And an ass. He’s always been a troublemaker. He’s always lookin for a fight and finds em just bout every weekend at the bars. He’s been in and outta jail all his life. Cash, the middle one, is real smart. He likes to read and do all that stuff. We can’t afford those books at the store with the hard covers, so he pretty much just reads the same three books over and over again. Wyatt don’t do much other than follow at the heels of my older brothers. He can run real fast, though, and he almost joined the track team at school, but daddy won’t let ‘im. Said it wadn’t a real sport, that anybody can run. They get into trouble a lot. Just last week they got their asses handed to em by the police after they stole a buncha watermelons from our neighbor’s truck patch. I keep on tellin em to behave but they never listen. Dumbasses. They ain’t good for shit. They could do so much more but…Blake dropped out to work, Cash can’t get enough time to do his studies right, and Wyatt’s just lost. He didn’t really know momma none before she went to prison.”
“Well what about ya daddy?” Elvis asked as they approached the back steps of the porch.
Annie shot him a look as she swung the door open. She led him into the small ranch toward the minuscule living room. She folded her arms over her chest and nodded her head at her father.
“That’s my daddy.”
Elvis just nodded, saying nothing. Bertie Landry was an alcoholic, had been for years, ever since Annie’s mother went to prison. Bertie used to work at the oil plant and Annie had barely seen him then. But ever since his alcohol problem, he had gotten fired and didn’t do much of anything those days. In that moment, Annie stared at him in utter contempt. He was disgusting. He had become fat and round. His five o clock shadow was clocking in at more like eight o clock. His wife beater tank top was stained with beer, sweat, vomit, and Annie honestly didn’t want to know what else. He was asleep in a chair, his mouth open with drool leaking down his chin.
At that time, Bertie was a janitor at some motel in town but he hardly worked, claiming he had a bad back which made standing for long hours difficult. Since he didn’t have any education, manual labor was Bertie’s only option. But Annie knew he was full of shit, lazy, and pathetic. If he was capable of getting drunk off his ass every weekend, he could stand for a few hours a day to mop some floors. Annie shook herself back to reality.
“Come on into the kitchen. We’ll get the polk salad started. And you,” Annie poked her pointed finger into Elvis’ chest. “get to help.”
She pulled on his fingers, dragging him into the kitchen.
~ ~ ~
Annie clenches her jaw, the anger associated with those memories flooding through her body. Her eyes track Elvis’ figure as he moves around onstage like a beautiful maniac. Annie lets out a laugh when Elvis utters his next lines.
Gators got your granny.
~ ~ ~
While it sounded like a line out of a comedy show, it was true. They were in the kitchen, cooking the polk salad when she’d told him.
Annie was explaining the process for cooking the plant as she and Elvis chopped the shoots and dropped them into the boiling water on the stove.
“And then we boil it, cuz if we don’t it’ll kill ya.”
“What?”
“Polk salad is toxic if it ain’t cooked right.”
“Why the hell would ya eat it if it’s poisonous?” Elvis asked, shaking his head with wide eyes. Annie laughed out loud.
“We got a lotta dangerous stuff down here in Lousiana,” Annie responded, placing the lids over the bubbling pots. “Just last week we had a gator runnin loose over by the pond. He ate a few of the neighbors chickens fore they could stop 'im.”
“Jesus. You ever seen a gator?”
“Nah. But my granny had. She actually…well, she were killed by a gator.”
“She was what?” Elvis’ hand slipped off the edge of the table and Annie looked at him with raised eyebrows.
Suddenly, Elvis burst into laughter, a deep hearty laugh that shook his shoulders and chest violently. Despite herself, Annie couldn’t help but smile and release a few quiet chuckles herself.
“Elvis Presley, that ain't very kind to laugh at somebody’s granny dyin. It was very traumatic you know! She was down by the lake pickin some flowers and it just shot right outta the water and snatched her. They found her a few days later or…what was left of her, anyway.”
Elvis’ laughs had died down to just a twinkling smile. Annie shook her head and reached out to playfully punch his arm. His fingers grabbed hold of Annie’s wrists, curling around them gently. He absentmindedly rubbed his thumb against her soft skin.
"Eh, I'm givin ya a hard time," Annie said between heaved breaths. Her heart was thudding. "I didn't even know her. Met her once I think before she got eaten."
“I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to laugh like that I just…it just sounds made up,” he responded, tilting his head to look at her sweetly.
Their eyes met and, for a moment, it seemed like the world had stopped. Annie looked at Elvis and Elvis looked at Annie. Annie felt heat crawling up into her neck and ears and averted her eyes, biting her lip to prevent her coy smile from spreading. Elvis’ fingers trailed along the skin on her jaw, gently turning her face so that she was forced to look at him. She gazed up at him through her doe eyes, waiting with bated breath to see what he would do next. His eyes flicked down to her lips for a quick second and the next thing Annie knew, he was pressing his soft pink lips down onto hers.
She kissed him back immediately, her hands gently resting on his chest as his lips moved against hers slowly and deeply. His other hand slid around her waist and onto the small of her back, pulling her body closer to his. As she stepped forward, her hands slid up onto his shoulders and then wound around his neck. Their bodies were pressed tightly together and Elvis walked Annie backward until she gently hit the wall in the kitchen. Elvis tilted his head to access Annie’s mouth better and she accidentally sighed happily into the kiss as she tangled her fingers into his greasy black hair. Elvis’ weight leaned against Annie and she giggled into the kiss before placing her hands back on his chest and pushing him backward.
He stumbled back, surprised by her force, and their lips broke apart. They were separated only for a moment before Annie wrapped her fingers around his lace shirt and harshly pulled him back to her. His hand moved to caress her head and neck, supporting most of the area with just his fingers. This time, it was Annie who backed him up and they stumbled through the tiny kitchen together until Elvis’ legs bumped loudly against the tiny wooden square table. The table's legs were uneven which meant that it rocked back and forth with the pressure of Elvis’ weight, making a click-clacking sound on the (also uneven) wooden floor. Annie pulled away from Elvis’ lips when she heard her father snort awake in the other room.
“What the hell’s goin on in there?” he shouted brusquely.
“Nothin!" Annie yelled back. "Ain’t nunna ya business, dead beat.”
Annie shook her head and bit her lip, running her hands down Elvis’ chest again. He laughed nervously and tucked a disobedient strand of hair behind Annie’s ear.
~ ~ ~
As the song winds down, Annie finds herself staring across the floor at Elvis with furrowed eyebrows.
He left Louisiana the next day but not before he’d taken Annie for a bite to eat at the diner in town. He promised he would visit and that when he made enough money, he’d come back and help get her out of that shit town. He promised he’d write. He had written for a while and she always answered. But the truth of the matter was that they both knew, when he left that day, they would likely never see each other again. He promised he’d take her out for a night on the town, a dinner at a nice restaurant, and a new dress without rips or tears or patches.
But after he left, Annie took on yet another job at the diner to help support the family and had been too busy with her own life to manage visiting Elvis. Not to mention she never knew where he was since he seemed to be traveling all the time. And Elvis was even busier than Annie.
Annie’s eyes snap up at the sight of something bright white and blue approaching the table. She tracks Elvis’ figure with raised eyebrows as he wades into the crowd, a smirk plastered on his sweaty face. As he makes his way through the walkways, he's swarmed by groups of women, young and old, trying to get his attention. Every once in a while, he grabs a woman by the face and presses his lips to hers. While Annie is surprised and maybe a little jealous, she desperately hopes he won't notice her there. She doesn't want to be chased around by the paparazzi because she was kissed by Elvis Presley one time.
But her hopes are utterly dashed when, after he’d kissed another fan, his eyes shift and land on hers. Directly on hers. Annie's breath catches in her throat as she stares back at the man whom she might have learned to love had they gotten the chance to try all those years ago. He comes straight for her, walking quickly and confidently without breaking eye contact. Annie is incapable of doing anything other than sitting still and watching along with the rest of the audience. While several girls desperately attempt to get Elvis' attention, he ignores them completely, locked in on his target.
Annie raises herself to standing and nervously pulls at her fingers. He smirks as he approaches her, immediately reaching for her face and placing his palms on her cheeks. His hands are sweaty, very hot, and they feel soothing on her nervously frozen skin. Elvis pulls Annie's face to his and presses his lips against her. Her eyes close instinctually and she kisses him back the best that she can while being still frozen with shock.
When she pulls back, she feels his hands slip into hers momentarily before he lifts her fingers up to his lips. Keeping his eyes firmly trained on Annie’s, he gives her knuckles a soft kiss and then releases them. When she pulls her hand back, she feels something in her palm and realizes that he's slipped something into her hand. She waits a moment, just long enough for him to walk back down the stairs toward the stage and draw attention away from her before she reads the contents of the note.
It asks her to come backstage after the show.
As she glances up to see the golden curtains dropping down to shield Elvis’ figure from the crowd, she realizes the end of the show is right now. Annie's friends excitedly ask her how she feels being chosen by the Elvis Presley, how she feels being kissed by Elvis. But Annie barely hears them, too busy trying to decide what to do. It would be all too easy just to ignore it, act like it never happened. Go back to her normal life in Tennessee, where she’s doing just fine now on her own.
But she knows in her heart that she just can't do that. And so she turns to her friends.
“I…I’m really sorry bout this, Jessie, but Elvis gave this to me when he kissed me and I…” Leigh Anne snatches it from Annie's palm. After her eyes have quickly scanned it, her mouth drops open. She playfully shoves Annie with a big toothy grin.
“Oh hell no, you’re going backstage. Nonnegotiable.”
“Honey go!!" Jessie joins in, one eye closed as she gently massages her temple. "Do your thing and don’t worry about us! I have a killer headache already, so I honestly think I’ll just hit the hay anyway,”
Annie laughs and thanks her friends, giving them all a quick hug before jumping up and trying to wade her way through the crowd of people leaving the theater to flood back into the casino. She awkwardly approaches the man guarding the door to the side of the stage. He is absolutely huge, big and buff. He looks incredibly mean, like an Italian mobster or something. She nervously walks up one step and leans over awkwardly to hand the note to the man.
“Hi. Elvis gave this to me,” she says with a shrug. “I don’t really know what I-”
“Go on in,” he responds, pushing the door open with ease and standing to the side so Annie can fit through. “He should be expecting you.”
She nods and walks through the doorway, folding her arms over her chest with nervousness as she steps around the staff and crew toward the dressing room. Another man, very similar in appearance to the first guard, is standing guard outside the door. Annie approaches him with a shrug.
“Name,” he says curtly and gruffly.
“Annie Landry.”
The man reaches behind him to wrap his knuckles on the door. "A muffled 'yeah' sounds from inside the room and the security guard shouts back.
“Annie Landry to see you, Mr. Presley.”
Annie hears a muffled response and, thus, the second door is opened for her. She gulps and steps inside, dropping her eyes until she's found enough courage to raise them and see him. He's already stripped out of his jumpsuit and is wearing an expensive-looking red and black robe with the letters EP sewn in fanciful script onto the lapel. She freezes when he glances at her. He runs his fingers through his sweaty, wet black hair.
“God damn,” he says quietly when he finally sees her.
His eyes trail up and down her body, and he leans on his back foot to observe her. She feels embarrassed and shoots him the most charming smile she can muster.
“I knew it was you," he continues. "I could tell by ya eyes. Damn it’s good to see ya, Annie.”
She laughs breathlessly at the sound of his voice forming the letters of her name. She nervously tucks a strand of hair behind her ear and takes a step further into the room. Elvis throws a pillow onto the ground and gestures at a small red velvet loveseat.
“Here, take a seat. Let’s talk. It’s been what…ten years since I saw ya last,” he says, rummaging around to clean up the place a little.
His efforts aren't very successful considering there are clothes and accessories strewn everywhere, all over the floor and on top of the furniture.
“Close to it,” Annie replies, taking a seat across from Elvis on the loveseat.
They both turn to face each other and Annie can't stop the smile that spreads across her face as his attention lands fully on her. Silence settles between them before she speaks up again.
“So…what’s been goin' on with ya, mister big-shot rockstar?” she jokes, offering a gentle chuckle.
He smiles handsomely, those little dimples forming by the corners of his lips.
“Well I, uh, obviously made it in the music business,” he says with a shrug. “I, uh…went to Germany for a while. Did some movies. Did a television special. Now I’m here, performin for a real audience again.”
Annie nods, waiting for him to prompt her with the same question. Instead, he continues.
“Oh I, uh, got married too, actually."
Annie’s heart drops to her feet.
“Oh? Congratulations!” Annie says, nodding through the pain that threatens her entire being.
“Thank ya, but I don’t know that it really applies no more seein as I also got divorced earlier this year."
He chuckles nervously and Annie presses her lips together to prevent the smile from returning. As mean as it sounds, Annie isn't sorry to hear that. At all.
“Oh…god I’m sorry then.”
Silence settles once again and Annie opens her mouth to say something before shutting it. They are both different people, she realizes. Both on their own life trajectories. Finally, thank god, Elvis speaks up again.
“You, uh…getting married yaself I see,” Elvis says, gesturing to the sash that Annie has forgotten she's wearing.
“Oh!” she shouts, perhaps a little too loudly, ripping the sash over her head as she feels heat creeping into her cheeks. She smiles nervously “No! I, uh…just a bridesmaid. The bride was a lil tipsy and somehow I wound up wearin this. But, uh…no. No fiancé here. No partner here, actually.”
“Oh, damn,” Elvis replies with an awkward chuckle as he reached up to itch the back of his neck. "There...really ain't nobody snatched ya up yet?"
Annie shakes her head as another bout of awkward silence descends upon them. Annie takes it as an excuse to look him over, up close this time. Annie’s eyes immediately lock onto his bicep. He still looks pretty strong, maybe a little bigger than he was when she’d known him down in Louisiana. But he's still fit and he obviously still moves well from what she'd seen onstage. Speaking of onstage…
“So you wrote,” she pauses to heave a small whispered laugh, “a whole damn song bout me pickin polk salad?”
Elvis’ eyes meet hers and he bursts out in hearty laughter, his sea blue eyes sparkling under the warm lights of the dressing room. Annie shakes her head and playfully punches him in the arm.
“You do realize that I did other things, right? Like harvestin polk salad wadn't my entire existence back then? And hey, what the hell? Didja really have to include that a gator ate my grandmother?”
Elvis just laughs harder, showing no signs of remorse as his hand grips his knee.
“I’m sorry but it was just too damn funny, Annie. And it rhymed, I couldn't pass that up,” he chokes out between laughs.
Annie shakes her head disapprovingly but stares at him lovingly. Once their laughs have ceased Elvis’ face turns serious and he reaches out to take her hand. His fingers flex and relax, hesitating to take ahold of her fingers. But she stretches them out, intertwining them in his.
“I…can’t believe ya remembered all that,” Annie says, daring to gaze back up into his eyes. “Bout me and my family, I mean. You know as ya were singin I was thinkin bout it all. That day when you visited me. Do you remember?”
“Course I do. You made me eat that god awful polk salad with the carrots. Tasted like some kinda delicacy for a bunch of rabbits,” he responds and feigns a shiver.
“Don’t remind me," Annie huffs jokingly. "I member how much ya hated the taste of that. But it’s green, Elvis. What'd ya expect it to taste like? Chocolate?”
They both chuckle in unison.
“I think bout that all the time,” he responds, squeezing onto her fingers. “Sometimes when I’m lonely, I like to go back to that day. I…”
He falters but Annie squeezes his hands, encouraging him to continue. She has to know what he wants to say. She needs to know. Her eyes are trained on his, holding his gaze.
“I sorta always wished we’d had more time. That we’d made it work or at least tried to cause…I dunno maybe I’m off my rocker here but….I always felt like maybe somethin coulda happened tween us, maybe,” he finishes, glancing up into Annie’s eyes with a hopeful glaze over his own eyes.
“I kinda wish that, too.”
Annie heaves exactly one breath before Elvis leans in to capture her lips. She doesn't move, afraid that she might ruin the moment somehow. When his lips finally connect with hers, she releases a contented sigh and closes her eyes, leaning her head forward into him. His lips are plump, soft, and warm, perfectly capturing her own as he pulls her top lip between his. Her hand gently rests on his thigh as his winds around her neck to pull her face deeper into his own. He pulls back for a moment and she flutters her eyes open to see him smirking at her. She returns the expression but his face turns serious again and he leans back in, pressing his lips firmly against hers.
His fingers grip the back of her neck and she moans quietly in response. As his lips open again for another kiss, she takes hold of his bottom lip between her teeth and pulls it out before releasing it. Elvis' eyes flick down to Annie's lips and back up to her eyes. She stares back mischievously.
“Ya know I meant it when I said you're a mean, straight razor-totin woman,” he says and Annie laughs loudly.
Silence settles as they both return to the reality of the moment.
“Well, it’s gettin late and I got maid of honor duties to get to fore the big day tomorrow,” she moves to get up but Elvis’ hands are firmly attached to her waist. She plops back down on the couch with a giggle. “Elvis, I gotta go. Seriously.”
"What if I just don't letcha?"
Annie laughs and then glares at him with a quirked eyebrow.
“I’ll make ya. And you don’t wanna challenge me. You know that’s a fight you're gonna lose, sir.”
Elvis laughs, leaning over to press one last kiss to the tender spot between Annie's ear and jaw.
“Aright fine. Go do ya maid of honor thing.”
He waves his hand dismissively and Annie giggles. She runs a hand over his soft cheek before ripping herself away from his grasp. As his hands slide off her hips, she catches one palm in her fingers and lets it gracefully drag from her hand. She turns, walking toward the door but pauses with her fingers on the handle.
“You know, I’ll be round for a few days with the weddin and all. So, um…you should come see me. Maybe you can show me round Vegas and all that. We could go for that dinner we never got to.”
Elvis’ eyes light up and he smiles warmly with a nod.
“I’d like that very much, my lil Polk Salad Annie."

“So this is it!” Priscilla says, gesturing all around her.
Your eyes follow her arms to take in your surroundings. The buildings are tall and painted white with large posters, signs, and decorations hanging haphazardly everywhere. While you walk along the blacktop, your eyes are pulled in a thousand directions as you observe props, movie sets, and workers running chaotically around the property.
Priscilla has been one of your best friends for as long as you can remember and she knows that you’ve always been fascinated with films and moviemaking. So when Cilla offered to have you visit Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios in California and see what a real movie set looks like, you would never have dreamed of turning her down. You’d packed a bag within a matter of hours and been ready to go a week before your flight even left for California.
Practically vibrating inside, you’d met Priscilla and her driver at the airport a few hours ago. It’s been a while since you’ve seen Cilla, with her marrying Elvis and having Lisa Marie and all, so you’re more than happy to have some time to spend with your best friend once again. You’d talked the whole car ride, enthusiastically discussing your careers, families, love lives, and whatever else happened to come up.
And now, you’re finally here! At Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios where Elvis just finished filming his movie Clambake. According to Cilla, the agenda includes her giving you a personalized tour of the grounds, the costuming department, one of the sets for the movie, her and Elvis’ trailer, and of course an official introduction to her new husband. As your busy eyes flick from frame to frame of the chaotic world around you, trying to take in as much as you possibly can, Cilla’s voice interrupts your train of thought.
“Oh! Y/N, come here and meet Elvis’ team. People call them the Memphis Mafia,” she says, wiggling her fingers with a giggle.
You share a smile and allow her to take your hand and drag you toward a group of men of different shapes and sizes sitting around in a circle and watching television on a tiny square screen.
“Hi boys, I have someone I want you all to meet,” Cilla announces, jerking your body so that you’re standing next to her. “This is Y/N, one of my best friends from Connecticut. Y/N, this is the Memphis Mafia. Joe Esposito, Lamar Fike, Billy Smith, and Charlie Hodge.”
Your brain grinds its gears as you try to follow along with her slender finger while it points to each member. As soon as each name leaves Cilla’s lips, you know you’ll never remember which man is which. None of the men stand up and only one or two even acknowledge your existence. Although you find it a little rude, you offer a smile and mumble a few ‘hellos’ anyway.
“And this is Jerry Schilling, Elvis’ producer,” Cilla says, gesturing toward a man who is in the process of standing from his seat, bent at the waist so you can’t see his face.
When he lifts his head, your eyebrows quirk up just the smallest bit in surprise. He’s quite handsome with a shapely face, strong jawline, and striking blue eyes. His hair is long and sandy, feathered almost perfectly in a way that makes it look incredibly soft. As his eyes meet yours, you feel an uncomfortable sensation in the pit of your stomach. His long legs only take two steps before he’s towering over you.
You stick out your hand and flash him a smile. His large fingers grab ahold of yours, firmly shaking them up and down. His skin is very warm and surprisingly soft for as manly as he looks. As you both stare each other in the eyes, your smile fades. After a few seconds, you realize that you should tear your hand away, that you’ve been shaking hands for too long, staring into each other's eyes for too long. But something prevents you from moving. Jerry is the one to finally release your hand.
“Hi, nice to meet you,” you say, adamantly forcing your gaze to remain on his eyes instead of dropping down to his lips like they want to. You expect a response but instead, Jerry just offers his own tight-lipped smile and nods respectfully. You glance over at Cilla, who is staring back at you with a quirked eyebrow and smirk plastered on her delicately beautiful features.
Suddenly, the noises of a crying baby shriek in the air. The high-pitched sound pierces through the calming static of the television and everyone in the vicinity of it winces or reaches up to cover their ears.
“Oh shit,” Cilla mutters before turning to you. “Listen, that’s Lisa Marie. I have to go take care of her real quick. Would you mind waiting a few minutes right here? I’m sorry…well, unless…hey Jerry you wouldn’t have time to take Y/N for a little tour, would you?”
“Sure. Not a problem,” Jerry speaks for the first time and you bite your lip to keep from smiling at the sound of his deep, raspy voice.
“Is that alright, Y/N? I can meet up with you both by our trailer and I’ll take you off Jerry’s hands?”
“Sure! Sounds like a plan!” you agree, secretly very pleased with how this situation has turned out.
Even though you really have missed Cilla, you’re intrigued by Jerry already and the thought of getting to spend a few moments alone with him is making your heart race with excitement. You watch as Jerry turns around and shrugs off his brownish-grey jacket to place it on the back of the chair he’d been sitting on. Your eyes can’t help but trace up the muscles on his back and shoulders as they flex. When he maneuvers back around to face you, your mouth pops open just slightly at the sight of him. He’s dressed in a deep red dress shirt, half-unbuttoned to reveal a tan chest peppered with curled sandy hairs. He’s already in the process of rolling his sleeves up to his elbows like he knows it’s one of your greatest weaknesses. You clear your throat as he offers a smile and gestures to follow him.
“So where am I supposed to be taking you, exactly?” he asks as you sidle up next to him.
“Uh, well Cilla said she’d show me the costume department and one of the sets for the movie.”
“Right. We can start with the movie set. Follow me,” he glances over at you with a handsome smile and, now that you’re closer to him, you can see two dimples curled into his skin by the corners of his mouth.
You feel a smile tugging at your own cheeks and you drop your eyes to the ground to prevent him from noticing. You walk in silence for a few moments. You gulp every so often, unsure whether to voice the words that rise into your throat. Eventually, Jerry clears his throat to break the awkward silence that has settled and his effort gives you the courage to speak up.
“So, you’re Elvis’ producer? That’s super cool! Sounds like a busy gig,” you say, realizing halfway through your sentence that you actually have no idea what a producer does.
“Yeah, very busy, especially recently with all the movies Elvis has been working on.”
“Oh, I’m sure. I can imagine…you know, with all the stuff you do…on the daily.”
You stumble through the sentence, feeling heat creeping into your neck and ears as you set a mental reminder to stop speaking. Jerry chuckles quietly, those handsome dimples returning to his cheeks, before he glances over at you.
“You don’t know what a producer does, do you?”
You offer a laugh and shrug, shaking your head.
“Not really…”
“I do a lot of the dirty work. Finding and pitching projects for Elvis, arranging financial things, hiring people, overseeing everything and making sure it goes according to plan. Or as close to it as possible.”
“Oh, wow. That is a lot,” you reply. “I could never manage to-”
Your words run dry as Jerry stops abruptly and steps in front of you, reaching across your chest to push open a door to one of the studios. You audibly gasp as you jerk to a stop, gazing up into his face which is only a few inches away from you now. His arm is dangerously close to resting on your chest, his body within a fingers-length of your shoulder. You can practically feel the heat radiating from his body as he looks down at you with those shining blue eyes. Your chest heaves with shaky breaths as your stomach does somersaults over itself. Jerry offers a mischievous smirk and shrugs.
“Excuse me,” he says and you can feel the heat of his breath on your face.
You blink away your emotion and nervously giggle, stepping back so that he can open the door. He holds it open, gesturing with his arm and giving a slight bow with a grin. You can’t help but smile at him as you waltz through the door into the cold, dark room on the other side. You step in far enough that Jerry can also enter and close the door. But once the heavy metal door slams shut, the entire room is coated in tense darkness. You feel your eyes widen as you try to see something, anything in the room. Suddenly, the space is filled with light as Jerry flicks on the overhead lighting. You blink until your eyes have adjusted and what you see makes your mouth drop open in awe.
You stumble forward, being extra careful not to run into anything or knock over any props. Your head tilts up as you look in every direction, taking in all the equipment stuffed into the tiny facility. In the middle of the room, surrounded by a circle of cameras and mics, is a square platform on which there sits a a pole with waterskiing rods attached to it. There is a giant blank screen hanging behind the platform. In the corner of the room, there’s a giant white and red boat.
“So what is this movie about again?” you ask as you approach the platform to get a closer look at the props.
“It’s about this guy who’s inherited a fortune and he trades places with a waterski instructor to see if girls will still like him without his father’s money. It’s…not a role Elvis is particularly happy about acting out, if I’m being honest.”
As he explains, you pick up the waterskiing props and check them out. When you turn and step off the platform to get a better look at the boat in the corner, your foot catches on something.
“What’s this?” you ask absentmindedly, leaning down to pick it up. You aren’t really looking for an answer, but Jerry provides one anyway.
“Oh, that’s the hose they use to spray Elvis while he’s filming a waterskiing scene. It makes it look more real, you know. More dramatic.”
“Oh cool…how does it work?” you ask, fiddling around with the lever on the hose. “Do you just-”
You’re cut off by the super loud hush of the hose clicking on. A strong beam of water sprays out from the nozzle and you can’t help but laugh as you fumble around, trying to figure out how to turn it back off. Once your, now soaking wet, fingers finally find the lever again and manage to grip onto it long enough, you pull it closed. It clicks off, the water drizzling out to a lazy drip. You brush some hair out of your face and glance over to see Jerry. You drop the hose, one of your hands shooting up to cover your mouth.
You got him good. He’s standing with his arms held up, bent at the elbows in a disappointed expression. His hair is soaking wet, matted to his head. It’s no longer its usual feathery consistency nor its bright sandy color. It lays flat on his head, dyed a dark brown with the weight of the water. As your eyes trail down his face, you notice it’s also laying halfway into his eyes and you hold back a giggle. But your smile fades as your eyes latch onto his chest, bulging out from the red v-neck t-shirt he wears. As your eyes continue down his frame, your breath hitches at the sight of the t-shirt pressed tightly to his skin. You can see the outline of his muscles. He has a six-pack…apparently. A nice one. You can’t help but stare at it. Persistently. For way too long until Jerry clears his throat roughly and your eyes snap back up to meet his.
“I am..so sorry, Jerry. I did not mean for that to happen,” you pause, trying to collect yourself between the laughs that are threatening to burst from your chest and the embarrassment that’s sending heat flying through your skin.
You turn, too embarrassed to even look at him any more. Jerry sighs as you stammer through an apology. But when you spin back around to sneak a glance at his facial expression, he’s facing you head-on with the hose in his fingers. He shoots you a toothy smirk and you hold up your hands defensively, but before you get the chance to plead your case he’s flipped the switch on. The water is freezing cold as it bursts from the hose and soaks through your clothes in a matter of seconds. Your mouth hangs open in surprise as your eyes squeeze closed and laughs erupt from your stomach.
Finally, after what feels like hours, Jerry flicks the hose off and drops it to the ground. You reach up to rub your eyes open and when you can see again, you notice Jerry, hunched over, with his hands on his knees and a red face. You huff and cross your arms over your chest, not bothering to wipe away the water droplets which are sliding off your nose and cheekbones. When Jerry manages to stop laughing and right himself, he looks over at you.
“Ah, sorry about that. But it was only fair,” he says, his long legs stretching out to take a few steps closer to you.
You freeze, your heart beginning to slam against your chest with every step closer he takes. For a moment, you just stare at each other, your neck tilted upward to gaze into his eyes. Your own eyes threaten to flutter closed when his hand reaches out to tuck a strand of wet hair behind your ear. He seems to waver for a moment, his head bobbing forward just slightly. Your eyelashes flutter in anticipation but he pulls away with a clear of his throat.
“I guess we should, uh, get you a change of clothes,” he laughs and you join him.
He leads the way out of the building and across the street into another building of the exact same size, shape, and color as all the others. As soon as you walk in, you know exactly where you are. There are rows upon rows of costumes, all for different types of movies and characters, some bagged and some free-hanging. You immediately flood into the room, randomly choosing an aisle and traipsing through it while dragging your fingers along the different fabrics. Feathers, fur, leather.
You pause as your fingers land on a silky blue top. You push the other clothes out of the way to get a better look at the shirt and then pull it from the rack. It's gorgeous and looks remarkably comfortable and similar to your favorite top at home.
"So can I just pick...anything?" you ask, your eyes searching for Jerry in the massive room.
When you find him, you can see that he's already holding a complete outfit composed of a white dress shirt and a pair of tan pants. He's approaching you in the aisle. He gently lifts the top from your fingers and looks at it for a quick moment.
"I don't know, to be honest. But I say go for it," he replies with a mischievous smirk. "That color suits you."
You giggle and return to search for a pair of pants. Almost right next to the blue top you find what you're looking for and lay them both over your arm, waiting for further instructions from Jerry.
"I don't think there are any convenient places for us to change, since this is just the warehouse and not the dressing rooms. Uh," Jerry pauses as he glances around for a place where you can have at least a little privacy to change.
"We can just change in the corner," you suggest with a shrug.
"You sure?"
"Yeah. As long as you promise not to look."
Jerry chuckles as you shoot him a look. He follows you into the corner and you turn your back toward him. You glance over your shoulder to see him doing the same.
"Hey, no peeking."
"Same to you," he quips back and you roll your eyes playfully.
You turn back around and lift your top over your head, the fabric sticking to your body and unwilling to lift off. Once you've managed to wrestle it away, you carefully pull the other top on and adjust it to fit. You do the same with the pants.
"Hey, Jerry, can I turn around no-"
Your head snaps up as you sense Jerry's hands on your waist. They're so warm you can feel them through your top. You bite your lip and turn around in his grasp. His fingers slide along your waist with ease. You glance up into his eyes and he smiles down at you.
You know what's going to happen but it doesn't take anything away from the satisfaction when Jerry's hand slides onto your cheek. You lean into his touch, begging him to press his lips to yours. Your wish is granted as he lowers his face down to brush his lips against you. He hovers above your lips for a few moments. You suck in a breath, anxiously awaiting contact. After a few seconds, you can't wait any longer. You bob your head forward and smash your lips onto his.
Jerry's free hand grips onto your waist as his body weight leans against you. Your fingers brush up the soft fabric of his shirt and tangle into his neck and hair. Despite being soaked, his sandy locks are still soft and fine in your hand like you're running your fingers through wispy white clouds. You feel Jerry starting to walk you back and you allow him to press against you as your back hits the wall. You sigh gripping onto his neck as his thumb puts pressure on your cheekbone. Your leg instinctually begins to rise up, curling around him to pull his hips deeper into yours and-
BANG.
From somewhere in the room, something has fallen over or been knocked over. You both pull apart in shock, breathing heavily. You grasp onto his shirt, your leg halfway up his and flexed with a mixture of arousal and fear. After you both realize there's no imminent threat, you share a chuckle. Jerry's hands still rest on your face and waist and you would give anything for them to remain there forever. His blue eyes sparkle in the light as he gazes down at you.
"You looked," you say with a coy smirk.
"We always look."
You giggle, raising your neck up and curling your fingers around his to bring his lips down to yours again. You can feel him smiling into the kiss as his grip tightens around your waist once again. When he releases you, you rest your forehead against his, a smile permanently pasted on your features.
“We should probably get going,” you say with a nervous chuckle, pulling at the silky fabric of his shirt. You bite your lip as you glance up into his deep blue eyes. “Before we get into more trouble.”
“You know I don’t mind this trouble too much,” Jerry says, running his thumb along your cheekbone with a smile. You lean into his touch and stick your tongue between your smiling teeth. “But you got a tour to finish. Cilla’ll probably be wondering where we ran off to.”
He intertwines his fingers into yours and pulls you away from the wall. You unflex your fingers, assuming he’ll let go of your hand when you’re standing upright. But he doesn’t, only squeezing your fingers tighter. You swing your arms absentmindedly as you walk back with Jerry, close enough to smell his woodsy, musky cologne. A content smile rests on your face as you trot down the blacktop road. As if the moment isn’t perfect enough, the road lines up directly with the path of the setting sun, big and orange as it’s slowly disappearing on the other side of the black line of earth.
You sigh happily as Jerry slows to a stop in front of a trailer which you assume is the place you’re supposed to meet back up with Priscilla. Jerry leads you to the side of the trailer, leaning his strong wide shoulders against it as he holds onto your fingers in his. You smile up at him, taking a step closer and raising yourself up on your tip-toes to kiss his beautifully luscious lips again.
“Hi guys!” Priscilla’s voice interrupts your actions and you fall back down to your heels, immediately embarrassed. “Sorry it took me so long but it doesn’t look like you guys had any problems finding your way around.”
You glare at Cilla with wide eyes but she just shrugs with a knowing look.
“I can take Y/N off your hands, now, Jerry. Just for a while to finish the tour I promised her,” Cilla continues.
You awkwardly squeeze out a chuckle and glance up at Jerry with a glimmer in your eye. He releases your hands even though you can tell he doesn’t particularly want to.
“Thanks for everything, Jerry. It was all better than I could have hoped for,” you say, shooting a quick wink his way.
You turn to follow Cilla, who stifles a laugh as you walk away.
“So…sparks are flying with Jerry, are they?” she asks, smiling at you with a wide toothy grin.
You feel heat crawling up into your face again and you shake your head.
“I don’t know, maybe. He was very nice. Very…very fit,” you say and Cilla laughs out loud. “Hey, maybe I’ll hang around a few extra days.”
“Good idea. Then Jerry would have plenty of time to give you a more…thorough tour of the studio.”
You laugh and playfully shove Cilla. As you glance over your shoulder, you see Jerry leaning against the metal trailer, playing with the rolled sleeves of his dress shirt with a massive smile on his beautiful face. You laugh again before responding.
“God I hope so.”
