We were chatting and my disability came up. The dude said “but you don’t look disabled” it’s genetic you can’t see it until I’m close to falling apart

“You don’t act disabled” it’s called masking sweetheart

“You don’t complain nearly as much as other people with aches and pains” because if I did you’d all be sick of me in the span of ten minutes

“You’re really brave for doing everything on your own” I’m not, I’m trying to live

“Are you sure there’s no way to fix you?” Yes. It’s genetic. I can’t be fixed. My symptoms can be managed but never erased. There is no cure for me.

And they were flabbergasted when I told them it’s not just my joints and skin that’s fucked. It’s also my nerves, my cartilage, my eyes, my brain, my teeth, my intestines, my heart and my lungs

I don’t have the same life expectancy or the same happiness expectancy as people my age. I’ve made my peace with it. I’m okay with the thought of dying early because my genes got fucked up. Im not okay with people not understanding that not every disability comes with a blinking neon sign

Not every disabled person owes you an explanation or a medical history. Some of us just want to live as normally as possible before it’s too late and the last bits of independence are also stripped away
