   “Nair~” 

The voice disappeared in the movement of the gentle breeze, the kitsune remaining seated on the branch, high in the tree. The illusion he had up prevented others from witnessing him, unless he wanted them to see him. However, Yuu was in a playful mood, observing the peculiar being with interest. 

   “This one’s behind you!” The voice did appear behind Nair, close to his left ear, but Yuu appeared in front of the being instead. Orange fox ears twitched in excitement as he shifted his half-mask to the side of his head. 

“Why are we still playing this. You can clearly see he’s cheating.”

Annoyed, the other men put down their playing cards and glared at him.

“Who’s cheating? You’re such a baby.” But the interruption was irreversible and the men had lost their concentration. They looked over the vast fields they were watching over.

“Wait, where’s the horses?” someone asked. Another cursed in a southern language. From behind the hill, a regal white thoroughbred appeared, followed by the rest of the herd. The white horse was worth more than all the others together, which were each worth more than what all the guards earned in one year together. But the horse was not alone: somone was riding on the thoroughbred. Clearly not Lord Tyl and clearly not the Arab prince that had given him the horse years ago. The rider turned the horse towards them and waved.

“What the-...” The guards stood up and grabbed their weapons, stepping into the dry midday sun.

“Greetings!” he said with a clear voice. It was a skinny teenage boy with a white page cut from which two small pointy ears jutted. Around his waist he carried a harmless shortsword in a scabbard that looked like it had belonged to his grandfather. The biggest guard stepped up, pointing his finger towards the boy.

“That horse is Lord Tyl’s! That is Tyl Kallias. Get off now!”

Someone levelled a cross-shaped tensile weapon at him. The boy looked intimidated by the men and their rudeness.

“Lord Tyls? That’s not how he introduced himself. I found him down the hill there.” He vaguely gestured behind him.

“You didn’t find him. You’re tresspassing. This is all the property of the Kallias family!” the man pointed at the horses, the field and the hills. The boy still did not flinch when he repeated that name.

“You mean somebody owns the horses? I don’t understand.”

“You’re stealing, kid.”

“Stealing? No! I asked politely.” He tapped the horse’s neck. “I’ve never seen such a distinguished horse and my mother said I always had to be polite. I can well imagine he is your lord.”

At this point the guards were getting really annoyed. The confused rider appeared no real threat. Except to their jobs, if they didn’t catch him. They stepped up, but the horse nimbly stepped backwards and wheeled, quick as water. Even without tack or saddle, the boy and the horse moved like few would perform at a dressage championship.

Akihiro had seen a lot of strange creatures and had met all kinds of people - both supernatural and human - during his travels. However, it was his first time seeing a furry creature sleeping on top of the keys of the piano. It was indeed interesting to find an animal inside the inn when there was a garden outside for it to play, but never had he seen one rest on the old, wooden instrument.

|| One thing kari and i share is that we both learned that there is no rushing in life. There is no point in getting things done asap. You don’t have to graduate no matter what at a certain age, you don’t have to get your driver’s license once you’re 18 and so on. I really started to act that way towards my kids at work as well. Whenever they’d talk about the future or even just small things like “when are we going to do the activityyyyy??”  and i’ll just be like: “Soon maybe, after lunch, we’ll see what the mood is then” and i know they don’t really get it yet (not all of them anyway) and they prefer specific times, but i also learned not to do everything by timestamp. Sure, basic stuff like when to eat is important to give them rhythm. I know this contradicts the newer visions of pediatrics, psychologists and so forth because books say it’s important to give children a lot of organized schedules so they know what to expect, but i also learned at the same time: let go of ‘time’ sometimes. Look at the moment and breathe. 

Kari tends to live by these standards, well in his case it’s gotten out of hand, because he barely has any concept of time thanks to his immortality and he wanders, so if he says he’ll be with you around Yule for example, it could be on day of Yule, or day nine of Yule, there’s no telling, but he will find you. c: 

|| One trait Estyn has, is that when you tell her to do something (either in a commanding voice or impatient voice, basically anything but positive), she won’t do it. Not right away anyway. She will do it in her own time when she planned it. She gets salty about those things. ‘I was planning on doing, so don’t tell me to do it!’

It differs between the Hinn and werewolf pack Zafir is part of, so first I’m going to explain his pack’s hierarchy. 

Actual, real life wolves, have their own hierarchy. They function like a family, where the mom and dad are the leaders of the pack. Pups are protected and usually stay at the nest while mom and dad go hunting. If the pack is bigger, with more wolves, then they do submit to the ‘mom and dad’ of the pack. I don’t know if you’ve seen that famous picture of a wolf pack moving? 

It’s a good way to show how a wolf’s hierarchy works. I am basing my ideas off of actual wolves and the first thing you see on google when looking up a pack’s hierarchy are the words ‘dominance’, alphas, betas, omega’s etc. 

This article: LINK  is an article I really like because it basically explains why the entire notion of what we believed wolves to be is wrong. It’s not necessarily about being the alpha or the strongest of the pack that makes you the leader. The parents are the leaders. 

How I translated this to the werewolf pack Zafir becomes the leader of (I call it leader now and less alpha these days) is that he basically looks over the pack. Most members have seen a tyrant, who was the previous leader. He ‘captured’ Zafir, who in turn challenged the ‘alpha’ and won. Zafir became the new leader, but he functions differently than the ‘tyrant’. He uses each individual strength of each pack member, as they all have a role to serve. That makes the whole of the pack stronger. He acts like a big brother to Lin, a pup, because she needs a ‘parent figure’. Zafir respects each pack member’s opinion and takes it all into account. 

He will take on ‘challenges’ any time, if not merely to satisfy his pack members. 

Now, the Hinn, take the entire family idea rather than the alpha idea much further. Family is what matters most to them. They do have a leader who represents the species, sure, but they don’t assert dominance the way it has been romanticized in fiction and outdated studies who only studied wolves in captivity. 

I follow much more the actual wolf hierarchy, rather than the fiction werewolf one. Of course, I do have the tidbits about what a werewolf is all about (full moon, silver hurts, etc), but when it comes to pack relations, I love the idea of a family much more as that is the basic core of the Hinn in the first place and Zafir took that to the new pack he leads. 

Another thing is that male wolves don’t get heat periods, only the shewolves do as that is the period where they can get pups. So yeah, another famous fiction thing you see often is the alpha having lots of sexual intercourse and uses that to assert dominance as well, but neither Zafir nor the Hinn function that way. I added the bit where the wolf has one mate for the rest of their life, taking romance to resemble the soulmate idea more. I think it’s a lot more graceful? Especially for Hinn who are often seen as ‘honorable’.

Whenever he wasn’t on active duty for the lord, Zafir found an interesting way to pass some time. He hasn’t been to earth for so long... for the simple reason that it changed too much for his likes and because he had no idea what to expect. He found himself hiding away in a forest instead, eating away at a rabbit he killed (no point in killing a deer, since it was too big a meal for him alone). A deep and sudden growl escaped him as soon as a crow attempted at getting a piece of meat for itself. 

Because of that, he didn’t immediately notice the new being approaching him, not until a second later and he looked up with blood seeping from his mouth.
