2000 Stockholm - Number 5 - Mietta - "Fare l'amore"
Back to Italy and Sanremo for Mietta. Mietta is another singer with several Sanremo appearances behind her at this point. She won the youth section in 1989 and this is her fourth appearance in the main competition. Apart from singing in festivals, she's released six albums, appeared in one of the most famous Italian TV Dramas, La Piovra (The Octopus), as well as taking Esmeralda's role in the Italian dub of Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame. She's a reliable actress and singer.
Here she's singing Fare l'amore (Make Love), which tells us that Mietta is addicted to love. The words of love muddle all things, but the act - well, there's clarity and strength that can put all the words of love in the shade. Keep it simple. The song is a classic, with an orchestral, string-led build as Mietta puts her case for deeds over words, although I think she mixes up the lyrics a couple of times.
At the climax, the song fills with urgent passion right through a key change placed there to enable a recharge of stamina, before Mietta's right back in the moment.
Such dramatic passion you'd think would do well, especially sung so clearly, but this achieved only 13th place in the Festival. Nevertheless, Mietta was invited back twice more and her musical career continued unabated. In fact she started to appear in films as well as TV, and began featuring regularly on TV talent shows both as judge and contestant. He last Sanremo was 2008 with her last album out in 2011.
