For sure! Iâd love to know about your OCâs lore. Is she a part of team wang hu zhong? ^^
Sorry answering this took so long, I needed a little while to sort out all the info on my OC
First OC lore dump yayyy
Target no.1:
Suo MÄilĂn (é çŸçł)
Youâll find all my rambling under the cut just so the post doesnât look soo fucking long âŹïž
First a little background information needed for understanding MÄilĂnâs lore
She is part of a (for now unnamed) s4 concept of mfb split into four story arcs each revolving around one of four powerful beys based on the Si XiĆng (= Four Perils) of Chinese Mythology: Taotie (Gluttony), Qiongqi (Deviousness), Taowu (Ignorance/Stubbornness) and Hundun (Chaos)
MÄilĂn is the blader corresponding to Bronze Taotie a bey crafted after the beast of gluttony and the antagonist of the first story arc
General info on MÄilĂn:
- her name Suo MÄilĂn stems from the Chinese surname é meaning chains/thick rope and çŸçł meaning beautiful jade
- I sometimes also refer to her as the jade thief
- during her story arc she is 19 years old (for reference around Chaoxinâs age), during Fusion - Fury sheâd be 16 - 18 years old
- she uses she/her pronouns, is cisgender and bisexual
- sheâs part of a long lasting upper class Chinese family
- she is bold, loud, a little feisty and very mischievous, when someone (Chaoxin) flirts with her she gladly flirts back
- around her family sheâs a lot more reserved and tends to suppress her feelings, additionally sheâs easily influenced by her parents and a little unworldly
- sheâs sneaky, clever and good at planning and trickery
Background info:
During the Shang Dynasty (1600-1045 BC) the wealthy Suo family commissioned a bey partially made from bronze as a symbol of wealth and power: Bronze Taotie.
The Suo family used Bronze Taotie during the war in the Warring States Period of the Zhou Dynasty (476-221 BC) to gain power.
Thereby the bey came to be known as a ravenous beast who devours its opponents spirit.
During the war an ancestor of the founder of Beylin Temple tried to aid starving civilians and soldiers hoping to aid in regaining peace for the country.
However they quickly realized that Bronze Taotie was preventing the war to come to rest, it was too powerful and too dangerous (especially in the hands of someone as power hungry as the Suo family).
So they defeated Taotie in a long, strenuous bey battle and took the bey away from the Suo family.
Years later when Beylin Temple was founded Bronze Taotie was locked away in a labyrinth under the temple to be kept hidden for safekeeping.
MÄilĂnâs story:
Generations later while still extremely wealthy the Suo family has lost most of its influence over modern China.
Reminded of the impact of beys by the virality of the Nemesis Crisis the youngest member of the family, MÄilin, is tasked by her father to bring back Bronze Taotie so the family can regain their power.
MÄilĂn having been trained as a blader from a very young age by her mother is the only family member fitting both in age and strength to infiltrate Beylin Temple and steal back Bronze Taotie.
Due to being very sheltered as a kid and extremely influenced by her parents MÄilĂn doesnât question the actions asked of her and begins the process of getting accepted into Beylin temple with her original bey Jade Lacerta.
While MÄilĂn easily gets accepted as a Beylin Temple blader finding the labyrinth hidden under the temple ends up being a lot harder than she thought it would be.
MÄilĂn didnât expect to meet a few certain obstacles.
Sheltered as she was MÄilĂn wasnât really aware of the members of Wang Hu Zhong but she certainly didnât expect to meet the only person outside her family she ever was close to, Chi Yun, her former neighbor.
Chi Yun was a strong blader even as a child which was why MÄilĂnâs mother made an exception and let MÄilĂn train with him even though he wasnât part of the family.
Being the only other child she knew (though a bit younger than her) Chi Yun quickly became her best friend and the two were inseparable.
That is until MÄilĂn became strong enough to defeat Chi Yun.
MÄilĂnâs mother, no longer seeing reason for the two to train together, forbid her from seeing Chi Yun.
And Chi Yun decided to train in Beylin Temple so he could become strong enough to defeat her again.
But not just MÄilĂnâs affection towards her childhood best friend stands in the way of her betraying Beylin Temple.
She becomes fast friends with Mei Mei and to her dismay develops an undeniable crush on Chaoxin.
But even as she pushes aside her feelings, to steal Broze Taotie the jade thief has to pull all tricks from her book.
She has to plan, cause some mischief and eventually even matchmake a little.
But when she finally ventures into the labyrinth and gains Bronze Taotie, stealthily escaping doesnât work out the way she imagined.
As she tries to escape she has to face her strongest opponent yet, Dashan, and with a bey sheâs never wielded before, no matter how powerful, she doesnât stand a chance against the guardian of Beylin Temple.
Or maybe she loses because she doesnât want to win at all anymore?
MÄilĂn starts to question if sheâs doing the right thing and if her family should once again gain the power of Bronze Taotie, the ravenous beast.
So instead of stealing Taotie she learns to wield its power on her own and eventually becomes a member of Wang Hu Xhong and starts dating Chaoxin.
(So to answer your question yess technically MÄilĂn is a member of Wang Hu Zhong :))
Facts on the background of Bronze Taotie:
- the Taotie was a common motive in Bronze items during the Shang Dynasty
- a theory also says that it depicts masks that symbolize ancestors spirits
- the bronze vessels were basically created by artisans under the employment of rich and powerful patrons often even Shang Dynasty kings themselves which is why the Taotie represents power and wealth
- the Taotie motive is also oftentimes found in jade objects
- later during the Warring States Period of the Zhou dynasty the word Taotie came to mean glutton (due to feast of the rich being popular and the bronze vessels being related to food related duties)
- the Taotie became a sign of extravagance and something to be avoided during war (cuz lack of food for soldiers)
- thereby the mythology of the Taotie monster came to exists: the Taotie is one of the four legendary malevolent beasts representing human sin also called the four perils, itâs a ravenous man-devouring beast with an insatiable appetite and incredible greed
- Bronze Taotie doesnât 100%ly match the constellation theme of mfb because it isnât based on the 88 official constellations but instead on the twenty-eight-mansions-system (the constellation system during the Shang Dynasty)
- Taotie is based on the constellation WĂši XiĂč / Stomach which matches the theme of gluttony
- the Stomach is the Chinese equivalent of the constellation Aries which additionally matches the appearance of an alternate version of the beast Taotie from the literary work âThe Classic of Mountains and Seasâ called the Pi Xiu wich has a goats body (obv Aries is technically a ram not a goat but it has a similar appearance)
Iâm pretty terrible at bey design but here are some roughs of Bronze Taotie and also Jade Lacerta:
MÄiliĂn is by far the OC I have the most lore figured out for (my favoritism is showing a little unfortunately)
Iâll try to post about the lore of the other three Si XiĆng bladers soon but itâs still a lot less thought through due to the fact that originally MÄilĂn was supposed to be a stand alone OC and I only made the others because creating bladers based on the other three perils was too intriguing lmao
Also I just wanna say thanks to anyone who read this absolute beast (ha get it? sry Iâm not funny) of a post
