baby gumi has a nightmare
toji's leg is haphazardly thrown across your hip, his arms caging you to him. your head is nestled on his bicep, comfortable despite being so muscly. tired from the day's activities, your husband and you were sleeping like rocks.
and then your sleep breaks.
it takes a second to register. your mom instincts kicking in immediately but your tired, new parent brain lagging behind.
soft cries are emanating from the baby monitor on your bedside.
you try to get up, but toji's heavy ass is half laid on top of you.
you glance at the monitor and see megumiβs tiny face scrunched up as soft cries and whimpers leave his mouth.
panic settles in when you realise itβs not his usual fussy crying, but rather something thatβs never happened before.
βtoji,β you push tojiβs arm off of you as he stirs, nuzzling his head in the back of your neck.
βmmm?β heβs still groggy and out of it, but once he hears the baby monitor, heβs getting off of you.
you slip out of bed, pushing your feet in the slippers and hurry out of the bedroom. toji is hot on your heels, his legs working better than his overly tired brain.
you reach the nursery in record time, hearing your babyβs muffled whimpers and cries before you throw the door open and beeline towards his crib.
your heart clenches as you reach in and pick megumi up. he's crying in his sleep, tears streaming down his cheeks.
you cradle him in your left arm, your other arm coming up to pat him awake. it doesnβt take long before megumi is opening his eyes, looking at you in a confused, teary daze.
you wipe his tears, while it dawns on the kid that whatever he was seeing was not real. he starts to cry, raising his arms up to you, signaling that he wanted to be closer.
you bring him up to lay him on your shoulder, softly swaying as you rubb hieds small back soothingly.
βshhh, baby,β you rock him as he cries, βitβs okay, itβs okay, mama and papa are right here.β
megumi burrows his head in your shoulder as he sniffles. you feel tojiβs tentative touch on your waist, and you spin around to face him.
βhe okay?β toji whispers, trying not to agitate megumi. but at hearing his voice, megumi lifts up his head and looks at his father.
his face starts scrunching up again as a new wave of tears spring up to his eyes.
βfuck?β tojiβs eyes flicks up to you in surprise and confusion, immediately assuming that he made megumiβs situation worse.
but then megumi starts squirming out of your hold, holding out his arms towards toji.
heβs wailing louder, wiggling in your grasp and leaning over to his father. toji is shocked but still moves his hand off your waist and towards megumi, grabbing him from you.Β
immediately, once in toji's hold, megumiβs short arms reach around tojiβs neck and he burrows his face in his collarbone, continuing his crying there.
tojiβs massive hand settles on megumiβs back, as his other arm supports megumi. his bewildered eyes find yours, his eyebrows raised as if to say what the hell?
due to megumiβs clingy phase all throughout infancy, toji had kind of accepted his fate as the lesser liked parent.
it didnβt help that toji had always deemed himself unlovable since birth, with you being a rare exception.
so he never questioned it when he created a notion in his head that megumi just did not love him. naturally.Β
but now, holding his sonβs small and warm body close to his heart, he realises how wrong he was.
itβs still a little befuddling to him, having to wrap his mind around the fact that megumi sought out him to get comforted from.Β to think there would come a day when megumi would want to be held by his dad while he was in distress.
you take this opportunity to check out in his crib, just to make sure that there were no physical discomforts and that he was, indeed, just having a nightmare.
once megumiβs sobs dwindle down to sniffles and occasional hiccups, toji moves to lower megumi down into the crib.
βpapa!β megumi cries out, startling the both of you. he clutches tojiβs shirt, refusing to let go.
worriedly, you step near them, βyou need to sleep, baby.β
his chin trembles as he prepares to launch into a new crying session.
you raise your hands in surrender. βokay, okay.β
megumi burrows his head back into tojiβs neck.
you yawn, bringing your hand to cover your mouth. toji shifts megumi into his arms.
βgo to sleep,β his voice is gruff, still laden with sleep, βIβll put him to bed.β
at that, megumi raises his head, βno!β
βno?β toji quirks his eyebrow, βfuck you mean?β
βtoji,β you try to reprimand him, but start yawning instead, βlanguage.β
βletβs justββ yawn ββlet him sleep with us tonight.β
βmama,β megumi mumbles his agreement.
βokay,β toji sighs, letting you step out of the room before stepping out himself with megumi in his arms. he turns off the lights and closes the door before following you into the bed.
once there, he sets megumi on the bed and the baby toddles over next to you, slipping in the space where youβre holding up the blanket.
toji slides in after him, turning off the lamp on his bedside.
megumi wiggles so that heβs burrowed in between you, making contact with both his mom and dad to ensure they donβt leave him.
you throw your arm over megumi, and toji throws his over your waist, encompassing megumi in middle.
finally, the three of you drift back to sleep.
βββ
the next morning, toji wakes up with megumiβs body laid across his neck and the entire blanket being hoarded by his wife.
what the fuck do babies even have nightmares about? he thinks while pulling megumi off his neck, being able to breath normally again.
