I received this email today explaining that the cost of my Microsoft 365 subscription was going up in cost from 9.99/mo to 12.99/mo, and that my plan would switch over on February 14th, 2025.

If you received a similar email, I'm here to tell you that this is deliberately misleading information from Microsoft, and you can absolutely stay on your current plan if they're trying to switch you to a new, more expensive one.

Log in to your Microsoft account and go to your Subscriptions tab. You should have some splurge here about how they're gonna automatically switch your plan on a certain date.

Find the "Cancel Subscription" option.

This will bring you to the subscription cancellation page, and if you scroll down, you'll find the option to simply NOT switch your plan to the more expensive one they're releasing.

Microsoft is trying to be sly about signing people up to their AI bullshit by making it sound very much like you don't have an option in these alert emails.

Even if you haven't received one of these emails, go check up on your Microsoft subscriptions and make sure they haven't just made a decision for you, because it's clear they would rather try to sneak and shoehorn Copilot into our pockets without our informed consent.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has sued the tech giant for allegedly misleading about 2.7 million Australians over its Microsoft 365 subscriptions. The ACCC has launched proceedings against Microsoft for allegedly misleading customers about subscription options and price increases after it integrated its AI assistant, Copilot, into Microsoft 365 plans. The regulator has alleged that since late last year, the tech giant told subscribers of certain plans that they must pay a higher price to maintain their subscriptions, which would now include Copilot, or they would need to cancel. The ACCC said Microsoft misled customers by not disclosing that subscribers could retain their current plans, without Copilot, at their existing lower prices. "Following a detailed investigation, the ACCC alleges that Microsoft deliberately hid this third option, to retain the old plan at the old price, in order to increase the uptake of Copilot and the increased revenue from the Copilot integrated plans," ACCC chair Gina Cass-Gottlieb said.

A large-scale phishing-as-a-service operation abuses Microsoft’s device code flow to trick users into authorising attacker-controlled sessions that hand over full mailbox access without stealing passwords. The campaign leverages Kali365 infrastructure to capture OAuth tokens, persist inside accounts, and manipulate inbox rules to hide security alerts.

Needless to say, I immediately canceled and have been issued a refund. But there are still two issues

1. I am in overdraft because I did not remember this was a thing at all and the refund will take time to go through

2. I forgot that I need Microsoft Excel for financial stuff, and I need to submit my income to ODSP within the next couple of days
