Interview: Cyril Rolando
Cyril Rolando is a surreal digital artist
Artist work space:
"I could just take a photo of the floor of my house, because I work and draw everywhere and at any chance I get.
To make it simpler, I will show you my psychologist office where I draw if a patient forgets or calls off their appointment.
You can see I drink a lot of instant coffee!
Maybe some people won’t understand why I haven’t a nice workspace… but when you have a family life and a time-consuming job… you have this kind of workspace at your office or you use the house floor near your baby of 6th months! Haha!"
Who were your biggest influences growing up?
"Tim Burton and Hayao Miyazaki are both the roots of my own world.
I like absurd, creative and enchanting universes. Both can tell impressive stories that you keep in mind. They changed the rules of the world by focusing on the meaning or the oneiric dimension...
Some video games had the same effects on my imagination, like "Monkey Island” where you can find a Grog machine or a talking skull at the same time!"
Are you a "get it done now" type of person?
"Every day, I wake at 5 in the morning. I get out of my bed with a strong passion to make this new day productive.
It would be impossible to procrastinate, I have very good organization with my to-do lists. I am a “get it done now” type of person, for sure!
This is why art is so important for me, it soothes me and helps me to take the time to… dream and be patient."
What is one thing most people don't know about you?
"Most of the time, art I draw is to seduce my wife. She is my muse because, if I can see in her eyes an interest for my new artwork, I continue it with self-confidence. If not, I change the colors many, many, many times or I simply delete it."
Besides art, what is it that you do?
"As I said for my workplace, I am psychologist.
I’ve been working as a psychotherapist for ten years and as an Expert for Courts for the last three.
I meet detainees to understand the psychologic profile and help judge them. This work is much different from my artistic activities or my psychotherapist job because I can get to work on hard cases."
