Jordan Henderson has defended his Liverpool teammate Virgil van Dijk over suggestions he would struggle against the Premier League’s best (Getty Images)Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson has leapt to Virgil van Dijk’s defence after a fake quote attributed to Michael Ballack claimed that the Dutch centre-back is only highly rated because he has not faced top Premier League strikers such as Alan Shearer, Didier Drogba and Thierry Henry. A spurious quote attributed to the former Chelsea and Germany midfielder went viral on social media last week, with many Liverpool fans angered by the suggestion that Van Dijk would have struggled against former Premier League strikers including Emmanuel Adebayor, Carlos Tevez and Diego Costa. The quote that has been widely shared on social media says: ‘Virgil van Dijk is very lucky to play in an era where there is no [Didier] Drogba, [Frank] Lampard, Alan Shearer, [Thierry] Henry, [Wayne] Rooney, [Robin] Van Persie, [Carlos] Tevez, [Emmanuel] Adebayor and Diego Costa in the Premier League. ‘No wonder they think he is the best defender in the league.’ Henderson, who appears to be unaware that the quote is false, responded to an Instagram post by backing up his Liverpool teammate Van Dijk. In his response to the quote, Henderson wrote: ‘They’re the lucky ones’. Even Drogba?’ Nicol told ESPN. So that’s not a problem. ‘Can he pass the ball? Yes he can pass the ball. I’d love to know which part of Van Dijk’s game he thinks would be susceptible to any of these strikers that he was talking about.’ Follow Metro Sport across our social channels, on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Mason Mount struggled as Chelsea were hammered at home by Bayern Munich (Reuters)Michael Ballack admits he has sympathy for Mason Mount after he struggled against Alphonso Davies during Chelsea’s Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday evening. Frank Lampard’s side face a mountain to climb in their last-16 tie as they were beaten 3-0 by the Bundesliga champions at Stamford Bridge. Two goals from Serge Gnabry gave Bayern a comfortable lead before Robert Lewandowski struck to seal the victory. Meanwhile, Davies delivered a brilliant performance on Bayern’s left flank and several Chelsea players struggled to contain the 19-year-old with his blistering pace. Mount was one of the Chelsea players who failed to get the better of Davies but Ballack believes Chelsea were set up too deep to exploit spaces behind Bayern’s left-back. ‘He [Mount] was a bit unlucky, he was doing one versus one against Davies,’ Ballack told Chelsea TV. Mason Mount struggled to get the better of Alphonso Davies (EPA)‘He has phenomenal speed which you don’t just see in the Bundesliga but at international level, it’s outstanding. ‘He had two or three good runs and maybe a little bit of an advantage but he got beaten really quick. ‘But you also have to find different ways, that’s a learning process, next time he will position himself better, maybe they [the team] push up. ‘Also it’s a learning in the group as a team about positioning on the pitch better. ‘I thought most of the time they were too deep. ‘Even if you play sometimes deep, it’s not a problem to have it under control, but you have to change rhythm as well but they couldn’t do it, they couldn’t create it.’ MORE: CHELSEA FC Michael Ballack feels sorry for Chelsea star after Bayern Munich defeatFrank Lampard singles out one Chelsea star for praise after Bayern hammeringSerge Gnabry trolls Chelsea after Bayern Munich's Champions League win #MichaelBallack #BayernMunichFC #ChampionsLeague
