One of Baba’s siblings showed up sometimes. They were tall like Baba, and had the same skin markings and tail, but their face was different. The skin was droopy, like the little red flaps on Michael’s chickens, and the eyes were…mushy looking. Like dough. Also, they wore a sheet on their head. So, if they were like Baba but not Baba, they must be a sibling. Michael had siblings out there somewhere, although they had to go away after Michael got infected. They’re pretty sure Baba’s sibling is named Ghostboo. Because of the sheet, maybe.

Sometimes, Ghostboo would sneak into her room in the Baba Rug House, and show her shiny things like Baba used to. Rings that were too big for her, gold necklaces to nibble on, stuff like that. It was fun, but eventually Dad would come back, and Ghostboo would fade away.

Baba’s friends also visited sometimes, although it was only when Dad was around. One of them was a grown piglin, and for the first few visits, Michael had stayed away, lest their missing eye be noticed. Dad told them the piglin didn’t care though, and so Michael started playing with him. The other friend smelled too much like death.

Tonight, it was only him and Dad. They had read stories together after dinner, and now it was time for bed. Michael walked his way to the bed, accompanied by Dad, who weirdly, was not dressed in his pajamas. When they reached the bed, Dad picked them up and set them on top of it, but did not climb in with them.

Confused, Michael crawled to the talking device taped to the headboard and pressed out a question with his hooves.

“Dad come to bed?”

Dad sighed, and lifted up the covers for Michael to slide under. “Not tonight, Michael,” he said.

“Why?”

“I’ll tell you if you get under the blanket,” Dad responded.

Michael wriggled under the covers, and pulled them up to his chest.

“I have to go do something tonight,” he started, “I’ll be back soo—I’ll try to be back for you. You’re going to have to go to sleep alone today, and maybe tomorrow. Techno and Phil are going to be around, and you can call them from the bed if you need something,” Dad paused, “they’re Baba’s friends, remember?” Michael nodded her head.

“They’ll be there for you while I’m not.” Dad reached out his hand and patted Michael’s back. “Goodbye, Michael. I love you.”
