A loud cry echoed through the park.
You turned just in time to see a little boy staring at the puddle of melted vanilla ice cream splattered across the pavement. His tiny lip quivered before the tears came all at once.
"Oh, baby..." you murmured, kneeling beside him. "That was your yummy ice cream, wasn't it?"
He nodded miserably, while pouting and staring at the melted puddle.
You smiled getting an idea to make his day. "Then I think we need an even better one."
His watery eyes blinked up at you. "...Better?" You nodded.
"The biggest one they have."
Five minutes later, the little boy sat on a nearby bench with an ice cream nearly the size of his face, rainbow sprinkles covering the top and a bright red cherry balancing proudly in the middle.
His crying had completely disappeared, as he enjoyed his new gaint ice cream cone glancing at you every now and then with a happy smile. You even tucked a little paper umbrella into the whipped cream.
"There." You gently booped the tip of his nose.
"Now that's an ice cream."
The little boy giggled so loudly that a few people nearby turned to look.
One of them. Couldn't seem to look away. Michael had watched the entire thing from the other side of the walkway.
He'd seen the little boy cry and he'd watched you crouch beside him without hesitation.
He'd watched you spend your own money just to make a stranger smile.
Now he couldn't stop smiling himself.
"...She's really nice..." he mumbled. His brother nudged him. "So go tell her."
"What?" He said shyly. Marlon scoffed at him. "You've been staring for five minutes."
Michael quickly defended himself "I have not."
"You absolutely have."
Michael looked down at his shoes. "I... I can't just walk over there."
"Why not?" Marlon said furrowing his brows.
Michael kicked a little pebble. "...Because."
"Because she's pretty?" Jermaine intervened.
His ears immediately turned pink. "Maybe."
His brother laughed and lightly pushed him forward. "Go."
Michael stumbled a step before turning back with the most betrayed expression imaginable. His brother only pointed toward you.
Sighing quietly, Michael took a deep breath and slowly walked over. Practicing what he wanted to tell you in his head.
"...Excuse me?" He said completely flustered.
You looked up.
"Oh! Hi." Immediately, every word he'd practiced disappeared.
"...I..." He rubbed the back of his neck. "...I just..."
His eyes darted toward the little boy happily eating his giant ice cream.
"...That was... really nice... what you did."
You smiled. "He needed a better ice cream... I mean who eats plain vanilla?"
Michael nodded. "...Yeah." too shy to say more.
Silence.
His heart was beating so loudly he was convinced you could hear it.
"...I'm Michael." You smiled thinking he was so cute and humble to introduce himself despite being so well known. "I know."
His eyes widened. "You do?"
You laughed.
"You're in a pretty famous group. Hard not to know."
He looked down with a bashful smile. "Oh..."
Another silence.
"...Would it... um..." He swallowed.
"...Would it be okay if... maybe... I had your phone number?"
You tilted your head playfully.
"You spent five whole minutes working up the courage to ask that, didn't you?"
His cheeks turned bright red. "...Maybe."
You couldn't help but laugh.
"If I give it, you'll remember to call?" He never nodded his head so quickly.
