Hahahaha. He’s my Tumblr icon for a reason. I have two Chris Pine characters, actually, but I’m always going to associate him with Ben Booker who’s seriously one of the gentlest, kindest human beings ever. He’s a part-time therapist, part-time psychology professor who loves reading books over coffee or red wine (depending on the time of day), taking personality quizzes, and busting out into Elvis or Sinatra. He’s estranged from his family because they don’t approve of his bisexuality, but this isn’t something he ever really talks about with anyone. Being a therapist is the perfect way for him to deflect attention from himself and focus on other people’s problems instead. He has an interesting, to say the least, relationship with his neighbor Alex March (played by the amazing @paperdoll-hearts). In a previous RP, we actually had them dating. He also has a flirtationship with a fellow professor, Ginny Cho (played by the awesome @undermyanumbrella).

Scientists on the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) have developed new opioid pain relievers that reduce pain on par with morphine but do not slow or stop breathing—the cause of opiate overdose.

Hymie Brinkmeyer has some blind spots: like believing his kids can do no wrong, which is foolish as he should know by now that if his seventeen year old son Kevin is busted one more time for possession then he might just have a drug problem. And he really ought to admit that his nineteen year old daughter Karen is pregnant, unmarried and has no idea who the father is... though it's apparently not the same guy who got her pregnant last time. Then there's the lump in his scrotum, which is probably a cyst - and there is Maggie - his English wife - she hasn't slept with him for years, and she seems very close to her psychiatrist, who quiet often likes to meet her late at night for a little Freudian analysis over a bottle of wine and a tub of Haagen Dazs... But Hymie's biggest blind spot has to be about the beautiful Colleen, his motorbike riding, leather-clad, dark haired Irish secretary. She's loved him for years but Hymie can't see it. Or maybe he doesn't want to - until one day, when he's lying in a hospital bed, she comes to visit him and that's when Hymie falls in love with her too. The question is will he leave Maggie for her? Well, he may not have to, because it seems that Kevin is planning a little matter of matricide - and that may solve everyone's problems.

I got sent a copy of this book from 'The Other Publishing Company' to review. It looked like a book I would very much enjoy and as the back states 'the frightening thing is, your family is probably just like them', it had me curious from the word go.

It is good. The story is pretty much told in an online blog format. Hymie decides to write to get stuff off his chest. We get the odd input from Kevin and Karen throughout the story. In all fairness, Hymie was a brilliant character. He worked hard, gave all to his family except probably his time and everything was taken for granted. He's worries were something he couldn't talk to anyone about. His wife Maggie was never around and his two children only ever wanted him for money, well Karen for sure. 

Hymie seemed like a genwine person. I adored him from the start. He didnt' want his family to fall apart, but there wasn't much he could do to prevent it. Colleen came around the right time, or well Hymie's realization that she loved him came when he needed it the most. They were a great pair and worked so well together, I really felt sad at the ending.

Karen, was well she is probably your (almost) average nineteen year old. Thinks she can take on the world, knows everything and doesn't listen. Her 'art' was something of an aquired taste and I really thought she was going to be taken for a ride in the book. But with the twists and turns throughout, i was very surprised. Glad, she grew up throughout the story.

Kevin, well he is a dark character. Great imagination. Probably the most misunderstood person in the family. But very clever. I liked that. I guess it's typical, there are some teenagers around today that don't want to stand out but act in a way that everyone expects or claims them to be, in this case a drug addict. But he was brilliant. Loved him and he always made me laugh. I think what I really wanted for him was his relationship with his father to work out. It seemed that's all he wanted.

I didn't like Maggie. I'm sorry. She was only featured in a bad way but even so, she was just a totally money grabbing, selfish, extremely full of herself. But it's what the author wanted us to think. Worked a treat.

Overall, a wonderfully written book. I do think everyone will relate, if not to the characters then the scenarios throughout the book. It's pretty much real life on paper. Scary.
