In 1981, Architectural League of New York turned 100. To commemorate their centennial, they invited Barbaralee Diamonstein to curate a project highlighting the collaboration of architects and artists for the last 100 years. Diamonstein decide to keep it contemporary. She invited a group of architects to invite an artist to collaborate with them. The result was this catalog and a traveling exhibition called āCollaborate: Artists & Architects.ā
Massimo Vignelli designed this catalog and the exhibition. But the archives has the receipts showing that Michael Bierut clearly had a hand in it. Scroll through to read the letter from Diamonstein thanking Bierut for all his work and to see some of the process work for the book cover and the exhibition promotional pieces.Ā
From Barabara Diamonsteinās introduction::Ā
āFor half a century or so, the profession had been dominated by an austere and all too pedantic Modernism that brooked no departures from its dogma. But now architecture is, in effect, being liberated, and architects need no longer fear that they will be accused of āviolating the spirit of the ageā if they work into their project a mural, or a stained glass panel, or a sympathetic sculpture, or even a touch of pure whimsy.ā
