Story excerpt:

Outside his window, the city hummed with its usual determination—the sound of traffic and construction and commerce, of people going places and doing things. The Ministry building stood in the late afternoon light, solid, enduring, bureaucratic—its walls the same grey as a hundred other buildings.

Inside, files rested in ordered stacks, confident in their arrangement—each folder in its place, each paper in its folder, each word in its paper, a hierarchy of organization that was itself a kind of faith.

Far away, in Nadugama, a single plank continued to thin beneath invisible labor—the wood growing weaker by the day, the crack growing wider by the millimeter, the hollow space growing larger by the hour. The bridge still held. It would hold for a while longer—how long, no one knew, not even the termites, who worked without calendars, without schedules.

The committee had been formed.

The termites did not celebrate. They did not need to.

They simply continued.
