i came into this series thinking i'd grow some genuine fondness for kate spencer because i loooooove when women suck and she does suck and i do love that but actually reading it is like being faced with a regular at the gas station who is never even funny when she gets up to the register much less polite. and who complains about the station's clientele even though she is the one walking into a station in one of the most densely populated areas in the city with her pantsuit and law degree. and who looks at the 5hr energy display and does the little "eugh! ha. people actually buy those huh?" and then is a little too serious when she makes fun of you for not remembering the exact kind of cigarettes she gets. and she walks out the door and your coworkers immediately descend on you with insane bits of lore about her they've picked up over the years she's been coming in and doing exactly this and that you cannot imagine gathering yourself because she kinda looks at you like she thinks you live in the gas station the way little kids think teachers sleep at the school. and the first degree serial murder is included in all this its not all that shocking tbh
