I think Derek def has containers of stuff, probably organizes his more torturous toys alongside his more "tame" ones. For easier access and if he ever happens to change moods in the middle of your fun.
It's likely rare that Derek would find himself so considerate as to be gentle or fun-loving, but somedays, he just wants to play with his food instead of tossing the plate straight to the wall. He wants to see how well trained he's got you by getting you to chase a ball or tug on some rope.
The humiliation is very compensating for his sudden "kindness"
And typically earning a treat takes a lot more sacrifice than one would hope for, but at least you've earned it without losing your life. After all, a good dog would do anything for their owner.
You will find, however, that the treat is his own "dog bone"
