METAĀ Ā :Ā Ā DAREDEV.ILāS SENSESĀ &Ā RADAR .Ā Ā
an in - depth explanation on da.redevilās heightened sensesĀ &Ā radar sense,Ā
&Ā the extent of what he is capable of.
mattās radar Ā & Ā heightened senses have gone through countless writers, Ā all with different ideas on what they can Ā & Ā cannot do, Ā &Ā how they help Ā & Ā hinder matt. Ā the purpose of this meta is to clear up what i personally believe is the extent of mattās abilities with his senses. Ā it is also to provide an explanation for anyone who might not be familiar with daredevil, Ā or simply how his senses work. Ā here i will be drawing on different bits Ā & Ā pieces of various canon to create my own personal interpretation of how his heightened senses function,Ā with special focus on how they play into his vigilantism. Ā
the first thing i want to address is a huge misconception about matt Ā & Ā the radar. Ā ch.arlie co.x epically failed when addressing mattās blindnessĀ Ā [Ā Ā while he was butchering the rest of his character in the processĀ Ā ]Ā Ā -- Ā in his words, Ā matt is āfakingā being blind. Ā this is entirely false. Ā matt is completely, Ā 100% blind. Ā he is NLPĀ [Ā no light perceptionĀ ]Ā Ā which means that he sees absolutely nothing. Ā the radar sense is not a replacement for sight. Ā the radar sense does not let matt āseeā anything. Ā it is merely another way of perceiving the world, Ā without sight. Ā iāve occasionally come across other debates over matt is really blind or not, Ā & Ā iām tired of it.
ā Ā Ā ONE THING PEOPLE NEVER REALIZE , Ā AT LEAST PEOPLE IN THE KNOW  ⦠ IS THAT I NO LONGER HAVE A NATURAL FRONT . Ā MY SENSES REACH OUT ALL AROUND ME . Ā SO , Ā IF YOUāRE AT MY BACK  ⦠ I MAY AS WELL BE LOOKING RIGHT AT YOU . Ā ā Ā Ā -- Ā DARED.EVIL VOL .Ā 6 ,Ā Ā # 3 .
now that thatās out of the way, Ā letās actually get into the radar. Ā mattās radar has undergone plenty of different interpretations. Ā some really good, Ā others⦠less so. Ā one of the best descriptions in my opinion, Ā is from waidās run, Ā where matt describes his radar as, Ā ā Ā my brain is constantly pinging my surroundings 360 degrees. Ā but thereās a sort of tactile facet to it as well. Ā radar sense feels like walking through the room Ā & Ā touching everything at once. Ā āĀ Ā
the radar is essentially a sixth sense, Ā somewhat similar to echolocation. Ā the radar ātellsā matt where objects are. Ā it spreads out in all directions, Ā with a distance of about 100 feet. Ā matt can push the radar a bit further if he concentrates, Ā though he rarely needs to. Ā in my opinion, Ā i also believe the radar can spread through walls to a certain distance, Ā albeit that takes a lot more concentration on mattās part than usual, Ā & Ā he doesnāt often utilize that unless he needs to. Ā it is also more difficult for him to tell what is in another room, Ā as the information is āfuzzier,ā Ā but itās good for getting a basic understanding of what might be waiting for him in the next room.
matt has no real concept of āfrontā or āback.ā Ā he is as aware of whatās behind him as he is whatās in front of him. Ā this has given him a distinct advantage in fights, Ā as itās practically impossible to sneak up on him or surprise him.Ā Ā [ Ā the best way to overcome that would be to overwhelm him either with several people attacking at the same time, Ā or with incredibly loud noises / intense smells. Ā ] Ā
the radar does not āturn offā like a light switch. Ā this has been presented in some canon, Ā but i donāt apply it. Ā the radar is a sense like any other, Ā & Ā it is constantly in use. Ā it is as easy to use as talking -- like talking, Ā he might need to focus to use it in a specific way, Ā but it no longer requires any sort of āpracticeā to control the way it did when he was a child.
the radar also does not tell matt any details about what it is he is perceiving. Ā he learns details from other sensory information. Ā for example: Ā the radar gives matt a vague idea of where someoneās head is, Ā but it does not give him any information on what their face looks like.Ā using his hearing, Ā he might be able to tell if someone has long hair by the way it sounds in the wind, Ā brushing against their shoulders, Ā etc.
REFERENCE POINTS FOR THE RADAR :
one misconception about the radar is color. Ā the radar sense does not have any color. Ā [ Ā the showāsĀ world on fireĀ speech Ā & Ā interpretation of the radar is⦠wrong in every way,Ā even if some of the canon in it about how mattās senses work is accurate.Ā Ā ]
the radar sense is something iām incredibly picky on actual depictions of. Ā comics, Ā shows, Ā & Ā movies are all visual mediums, Ā but in truth thereās no way of really āseeingā what matt sees, Ā as the way he perceives the world is completely without visuals. Ā thus, Ā when drawn or shown, Ā the radar should be abstract. Ā it shouldnāt look like sight.Ā Ā
one of the better depictions of this would be here. Ā ironically enough, Ā the movieās interpretation of the radar sense also isnāt a bad one Ā -- Ā here.Ā [Ā excuse the quality,Ā &Ā ...Ā everything else.Ā ]Ā what we see is overwhelming, Ā all over the place Ā & Ā disorienting,Ā Ā in a similar way that matt is constantly receiving sensory input from all directions.
ā Ā EVEN IN MY SLEEP, Ā I HEAR THEM. Ā I HEAR THEM ON THEIR CELLS. Ā I HEAR THE MOTORS IN THEIR CAMERAS WHIRRING Ā & Ā WINDING. Ā I HEAR THEIR SNIDE BACKSTABBING WHISPERS TOWARD EACH OTHER.Ā ā Ā Ā Ā -- Ā DAR.EDEVIL VOL .Ā 2 , Ā # 33 .
mattās sense of sound is one of his greatest strengths, Ā &Ā one of his greatest weaknesses. Ā a good example of just how strong it is: Ā during a search for someone, Ā matt stood at a high point in hellās kitchen, Ā & Ā managed to track someone down who was nearly a mile away because they had a distinct cough. Ā of course, Ā it took a huge amount of effort on mattās part to push it to that point. Ā thatās a rather extreme moment, Ā & Ā not the āusual,ā Ā but itās worth mentioning all the same. Ā
however, Ā loud noises are also the quickest way to disorient him. Ā there have been plenty of instances in which something like a gunshot has put him in a vulnerable position, Ā unable to perceive what is going on around him. Ā when that happens, Ā he falls back on basic instinct, Ā trying to reorient himself Ā [ Ā usually taking a few punches while he does. Ā ] Ā Ā
matt has learned to pick up on the many different tells people have through sound. Ā one of the most common uses for his sense of hearing is listening to heartbeats -- specifically to tell if someone is lying or not by the way their heartbeat skips. Ā this is not infallible. Ā pacemakers have more than once fooled matt into believing someone is telling the truth when they werenāt. Ā it can also be hard to tell if someone is telling the truth if their heart is beating fast, Ā or if they are a very calm liar. Ā
itās also worth mentioning that matt can generally tell what kind of injuries people have, Ā just from listening to them.Ā Ā the scene in season 1 where matt is talking with claire about what broken bones sound like is a good example of this, Ā actually. Ā found here. Ā warnings for injuries + injury mentions.Ā
to matt, Ā each personās heartbeat is completely distinct to them -- a bit like a fingerprint. Ā because of this, Ā itās near impossible to pretend to be someone else with him -- unless youāre able to completely change how your heart beats Ā [ Ā one instance of this was with lady bullseye, Ā where she came in a disguise, Ā & Ā matt was unable to tell if she really was lady bullseye or not,Ā assumed it wasnāt her eventually,Ā &Ā got his ass kicked later for it. Ā ]
matt has had years of practice letting most noises fall into a background hum when he isnāt in costume. Ā while going about his day - to - day, Ā most sounds fall into the background unless they are particularly distinct. Ā naturally, Ā noises such as yells or screams or bangs / explosionsĀ [Ā of any kind Ā ] Ā will put him on high alert, Ā but otherwise he tries not to eavesdrop when he can. Ā as daredevil, Ā he is completely āon,ā Ā with an ear out for anything that might alert him to trouble.
MATT :Ā Ā oh no Ā [ ... ] Ā gunpowder.
NATASHA :Ā Ā where ?
MATT :Ā Ā across the street. Ā two blocks.
NATASHA :Ā Ā do you know what kind -- ?
MATT :Ā Ā no, the woman behind me is doused in perfume Ā & Ā itās screwing up my radar. Ā i canāt--
-- conversation between matt Ā & Ā natasha, Ā darede.vil vol . Ā 2 ,Ā Ā # 62 .
the dialogue above is a perfect example of mattās sense of smell, Ā & Ā how it works. Ā like his hearing, Ā itās exceptionally strong, Ā to the point that he can identify specific smells from quite a ways off, Ā while also surrounded by other strong smells. Ā & Ā just like his hearing, Ā strong smells will throw off his radar, Ā & Ā make it much more difficult for him to know what is going on around him. Ā he also only needs to smell something once to be able to identify it every time after that. Ā
similar to heartbeats, Ā people all have some kind of distinct smell to him as well, Ā underneath whatever perfumes or colognes they may or may not wear. Ā this is another way he manages to identify people, Ā even if they are attempting to pretend to be someone else. Ā however, Ā itās not quite as reliable as someoneās heartbeat, Ā & Ā again he can be fooled if someone knows what they are doing.
mattās sense of touch is also highly sensitive. Ā in the show when stick confronts matt Ā & Ā drags him for having silk sheets, Ā & Ā matt says something along the lines of, Ā ā Ā cotton feels like sandpaper on my skin, Ā ā Ā is a good example of just how sensitive mattās skin is. Ā matt is also sensitive to shifts in temperature, Ā vibrations in the air, Ā etc. Ā essentially everything he mentions hereĀ Ā [Ā Ā same clip as before.Ā warnings for injuries.Ā ignore the world on fire speech.Ā Ā ]Ā Ā is a good explanation for his sense of touch.
mattās sense of taste. Ā not to make this about how matt is a picky eater, Ā but his sense of taste is strong enough that if he focuses just a little, Ā he can tell what kind of soap someone might have used when washing their hands prior to making the food. Ā or, Ā if they didnāt wash their hands at allĀ ----Ā he prefers to make his own food, Ā usually. Ā heās also highly selective with what kind of textures he will actually eat Ā [ Ā in waidās run, Ā matt mentions the texture of oysters as being highly unpleasant. Ā ]Ā Ā on a slightly cooler (?)Ā note,Ā Ā he can also taste things in the air.
finally, Ā this is a headcanon iāve come up with on my own with some small support from canon. Ā i do headcanon matt as having an eidetic memory post - accident. Ā in short, Ā he only ever needs to encounter a person, Ā a place, Ā a smell or touch or sound once, Ā & Ā he will be able to identify it every time after that,Ā Ā &Ā Ā remembers every detail of encounters,Ā outings,Ā etc.Ā Ā this is especially helpful when going over information uncovered while outĀ &Ā about as dared.evil.Ā Ā this also means that he can relive the sounds, Ā smells, Ā etc. of his worst Ā & Ā best moments over Ā & Ā over again, Ā but we donāt talk about that.
by the time he becomes da.redevil, Ā matt has had years of practice learning how to control his senses, Ā rather than letting them control him as much as they did when he was younger. Ā every moment of the day, Ā matt is comprehending Ā & Ā filtering through sensory input on a level beyond what we can really understand. Ā his senses are both his greatest strength Ā & Ā his biggest weakness. Ā they are not infallible, Ā either. Ā matt can absolutely miss something, Ā & Ā make mistakes because he missed that key detail. Ā there is a downside for every upside, Ā & Ā his edge can quickly turn into a disadvantage if someone knows about his heightened senses -- or if they just get lucky. Ā
