Re: Native American stuff, I think that Buffy ep you mentioned inspired the "his penis got diseases from a Chumash tribe" line in the musical ep, so maybe not uber-sensitive (great rhyme though). Star Trek Voyager had Chakotay, and I think his heritage wasn't treated too embarrassingly, although it was handled almost like an alien culture. I think that's the problem: the mythology is treated as ancient and other, when it's part of people's lives right now.
good eye! yes that does seem to be a mistake that a lot of media is making -- it's so incredibly consistent across lots of different pieces of media and like 20 years!
