@faeritael sent "❝ You married me for my claim, I know that! I just thought, given time, we could grow to be fond of each other. ❞ | to merlin from arthur / arranged marriage au?"
Merlin's brow furrowed. Did Arthur truly believe that was the only reason they'd been wed? Of course it is, said a little voice in the back of his head. He knows nothing of our destiny. Not for the first time, Merlin wished he could just tell Arthur everything: about the dragon deep beneath the castle and his predictions for the future, about the prophecy that held their lives together, about the magic that even now coursed through his veins. It had been difficult enough to keep the secret--and many times in his youth, he had failed: many in his village, aside from his mother, knew the truth. But hiding it from Arthur was the hardest thing Merlin had ever done.
Perhaps that was why they bickered so much--because there was always a part of Merlin that Arthur could not understand, that he had to hide away. And yet-- "I am more fond of you than anyone I have ever met," Merlin admitted. "I thought you knew that." Everything I do is for you, he thought, wishing yet again that Arthur could read his mind. Wouldn't it all be easier if he just told him? Everything I am exists to protect you. He was fond of Arthur the way he was fond of the sun, of the air he breathed: it was not a choice. It was destiny.
