#meri learns welsh...slowly

Aaaaack, so much to do before trip! I'm starting to look like the Bride of Frankenstein, so it's finally time to color my hair. Also getting nervous about the Welsh class. Everyone in the class probably grew up hearing Welsh all around them, much as I did Spanish. It's totally new for me. In the library in Llandudno, I came across a book written by an American woman who had done exactly what I plan to do: move to Wales and learn Welsh. She said that after six months she was ready to give up because she still struggled to put a simple sentence together. Her friends did not let her give up, however, and she said she was glad she didn't, because after another six months, she was fluent. She warns in the book that for native English speakers, it will take about a year to learn Welsh well, and not to give up even if it seems impossible. I'm glad I read that, because I know I'm going to struggle! I still can't speak Spanish, despite hearing it every day. I'm good at mimicking people, so I'm good at pronunciation, but comprehension and putting words together myself is very difficult. That's why my brain must be in absolute survivor mode, terrified into believing that this is the only language it will be allowed to think in from now on. Eek, I hope I can retain something from this class...
