Swimmers towels The Swimmers’ Towels... Photographed in the early 1980’s at Merewether Ocean Pool. Back then I used a 5x4 Sinar camera which required a bit of time to set up. Composition and focusing was done under a black cloth with the image reversed. The picture was made early on a Sunday morning with a cold southerly wind blowing. The air was wet with the fine spray from the surf. At first, I had the place to myself but soon two elderly, regular swimmers arrived. I knew one, Mr Saxarra, and nodded hello. He and his mate shuffled across the wet slippery concrete carefully. When they tied their ragged towels to the railing in front of me I realised the missing element for my picture had arrived. They entered the pool and walked through chest deep water slowly to the southern end. I watched the waves in the distance until the moment was right to press the cable release. Only 5 prints are left of this series. Printed on 800 x 1000mm cotton rag paper.
