Happy #Gotchaday, Felix! My miracle boy. My lucky cat. My happy boy. 9 years ago last Friday I first saw your photo in an email. I knew immediately that you were mine. A small rescue group was pleading to find you a foster home at a larger animal rescue. I replied immediately on behalf of the @milodogsandcats Foundation. A week later (9 years ago today, almost to the minute), I met up with the transport that added you to a car full of dogs. After 2 hours of being stressed in a car surrounded by dogs in crates, you came home with me, covered in pee and poop, freshly neutered, and with a bare bottom that had stitches from where your beautiful tail had to be amputated. I opened your cat carrier by your new food and litter box and you didn't come out. I talked to you very softly and made gentle noises. Then I heard it. Quiet at first then louder. Purring. You knew you were home even before you stepped out of that carrier. Right away, we knew something was wrong. You hardly played (for a 6 month-1 year old kitten) and when you did, you stopped to gasp for air and had a lump on your forearm. We took you to our trusted vet at @berkeleydogandcat and found out you had a completely torn diaphragm and a healing broken forearm. I negotiated your diaphragmatic hernia surgery through your first rescue group and drove you myself 2 hours one way for surgery and picked you up myself the next day. A total of 4 hours round trip each drive. Little did we know that your second diaphragmatic hernia surgery was just 6 months away that involved removing half of your liver and entire gallbladder. We sacrificed our honeymoon budget to save your life and have no regrets.
